Hip Hop’s Reign Continues: Gunna, Drake & Chance The Rapper Dominate Album Sales This Week

Andre WashingtonAndre WashingtonAugust 23, 20253 Minutes read

The landscape of hip hop music remains as dynamic as ever, with established titans and ascendant stars continually reshaping the charts. As the week of August 23, 2025, unfolds, a closer look at album sales reveals a compelling narrative of enduring popularity and significant artistic statements.

Leading the charge and capturing substantial attention is Gunna’s latest offering, “The Last Wun.” This project, marking a significant chapter as his presumed final release under the YSL umbrella, debuted impressively. It landed at the number three spot on the Billboard 200 chart, moving approximately 80,000 to 81,000 equivalent album units in its opening week. The album’s performance, which commenced around August 8, 2025, underscores Gunna’s consistent ability to connect with his audience, generating over 104 million on-demand streams in its first seven days. This commercial success, while not matching the six-figure debuts of some past projects, solidifies his standing as a reliable force in the contemporary rap scene. The intricate production and Gunna’s signature flow have resonated, with tracks featuring collaborations with artists like Offset, Burna Boy, and Wizkid further broadening its appeal.

Further demonstrating the genre’s robust performance, Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s collaborative album, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U,” continues to make its mark. While originally released in February 2025, the project’s impact has been substantial and long-lasting. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with an impressive 246,000 equivalent units sold, setting records for first-day streams on Apple Music for an R&B/soul album and reaching the top spot in 73 countries on the platform. Though its initial chart run was earlier in the year, its continued presence and influence speak to its widespread appeal and the powerful draw of these two artists.

Adding another significant entry to the week’s top stories is Chance the Rapper’s highly anticipated “STAR LINE.” After a six-year hiatus since his last full-length project, “The Big Day,” Chance has re-entered the charts with a project that fans and critics alike are dissecting. Projections for its first week placed “STAR LINE” within the top 20 of the Billboard 200, with estimates around 21,000 to 22,310 equivalent album units sold. The album also secured a position on the Top Album Sales chart, highlighting a dedicated fanbase that continues to support his independent endeavors. This release represents a pivotal moment for the Chicago artist, showcasing a more reflective and mature sound that has clearly found a receptive audience.

Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” remains a formidable presence, a testament to its monumental impact since its late 2024 release. By April 2025, the album had surpassed two million album-equivalent units in the United States, a remarkable feat that included being the first rap album of 2025 to reach one million units. “GNX” has consistently maintained a strong chart presence throughout the year, benefiting from Lamar’s critically acclaimed output and his highly-viewed Super Bowl LIX halftime show performance. Its continued relevance underscores Kendrick’s status as one of the most dominant and impactful artists in modern hip hop, influencing music stories across the industry.

Rounding out the week’s most prominent releases is Tyler, The Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS.” Dropping in July 2025, this surprise album immediately made waves, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with an impressive 197,000 equivalent album units in just four days. A significant portion of these sales, over 128,000 units, were driven by physical formats and exclusive merchandise bundles sold through his webstore, showcasing a strategic approach to album releases. This marked Tyler’s fourth consecutive number-one album, further cementing his reputation as an innovative artist and a consistent chart-topper whose music consistently commands attention.

The top-tier performances from Gunna, Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and Tyler, The Creator highlight the enduring strength and commercial viability of hip hop music. These artists, through their diverse styles and compelling narratives, continue to drive conversations and sales in the music industry, proving that the genre’s cultural and economic power shows no signs of waning. As these albums continue to stream and sell, their impact on the 2025 music landscape is undeniable, shaping the stories of the year.
