Cardi B’s Civil Trial Unfolds: Ex-Security Guard Alleges Rapper Caused Facial Scar

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellAugust 26, 20254 Minutes read

Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B has been at the center of a high-profile civil trial in Los Angeles, where a former security guard, Emani Ellis, has accused the artist of physical assault. Ellis alleges that Cardi B, during a 2018 incident, spat on her and scratched her face with a long fingernail, resulting in a scar that required cosmetic surgery. Cardi B, however, has vehemently denied any physical contact, asserting that the altercation was strictly verbal.

Background of the Allegations: A 2018 Confrontation

The legal battle stems from an event that occurred on February 24, 2018. At the time, the hip-hop superstar was four months pregnant and keeping her pregnancy private. Cardi B was visiting a private obstetrician’s office in Beverly Hills. According to Emani Ellis’s account, as Cardi B exited an elevator on the fifth floor, Ellis, who was on duty as a security guard for the building, expressed surprise upon seeing the rapper. Ellis claims this interaction escalated when Cardi B became agitated, accusing Ellis of invading her privacy by attempting to film her with a cell phone.

Ellis’s lawsuit, filed in 2020, details a series of alleged aggressions. She claims Cardi B engaged in verbal abuse, including profanity, body-shaming, threats, and racial slurs. The core of the legal claim involves allegations of spitting and a physical scratch to the face with a fingernail described as two to three inches long. This alleged injury, Ellis contends, left a scar that necessitated plastic surgery and caused significant emotional distress. She is seeking approximately $24 million in damages. An initial allegation that Cardi B used her influence to have Ellis fired was later withdrawn by Ellis’s legal team.

Cardi B’s Defense: “No Touching, So No Incident”

Taking the witness stand, the artist, whose legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, presented a starkly different version of events. Cardi B forcefully denied all accusations of physical assault, including spitting and scratching. “She couldn’t get a scratch from me because I didn’t touch her,” Cardi B stated during her testimony. She acknowledged that the situation became highly tense, admitting that she and Ellis were “chest-to-chest” at one point. Cardi B explained her anger stemmed from a feeling that her privacy was being invaded during a sensitive and private period of her pregnancy.

“Yes, I was angry! Because I’m pregnant! And this girl’s about to beat my ass!” Cardi B testified, adding that while Ellis might have intended to strike her, she ultimately did not. Cardi B also described her acrylic fingernails at the time as long but flat, questioning their capacity to inflict the alleged injury. Her defense team emphasized the absence of any video footage capturing the incident and pointed to perceived inconsistencies in Ellis’s accounts, as well as the two-year delay before the lawsuit was filed. Cardi B further highlighted that her pregnancy was not publicly known at the time, underscoring her desire for privacy and her apprehension.

Key Witness Testimony and Evidence

Providing supporting testimony for Cardi B, Tierra Malcolm, a receptionist at the obstetrician’s office, stated that the practice had intentionally closed early for Cardi B’s private appointment. Malcolm testified that she heard commotion and intervened, stepping between Cardi B and Ellis. Significantly, Malcolm reported sustaining a scratch on her own forehead from Ellis during the altercation and observed Ellis directing curses at Cardi B. Malcolm asserted that she did not witness any injuries on Ellis, nor did she see Cardi B spit on her. A plastic surgeon, who examined Ellis in 2022, testified that the scar on her cheek was “most likely” caused by fingernails.

The Legal Battle and Public Reaction

The civil trial, conducted in Los Angeles County Court, has garnered substantial public interest, partly fueled by Cardi B’s unfiltered and often animated courtroom demeanor, which has resulted in viral social media clips. Throughout her testimony, Cardi B addressed questions ranging from the alleged assault to her hair, her pregnancy’s impact, and her understanding of legal terminology. Her responses, including remarks about her wigs and her description of the exchange as a “debate” rather than an “altercation,” have been widely circulated.

Ellis’s lawsuit includes claims for assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment, seeking substantial damages for physical and emotional suffering, medical expenses, and lost wages. The trial represents a critical juncture for both parties, with the jury tasked with evaluating the claims and determining any liabilities. The proceedings highlight the intricate balance between celebrity privacy, personal safety, and the legal avenues available for dispute resolution.

Conclusion

As the trial unfolds, the courtroom drama involving Cardi B and Emani Ellis continues to draw attention to the intense scrutiny public figures often face. The central question before the jury is whether Cardi B physically assaulted her former security guard, an allegation she adamantly denies. The resolution of this civil case will significantly impact the global music icon’s financial standing and reputation, marking a significant chapter in legal narratives within the music industry. Cardi B’s career, which sees her preparing new projects, remains under a watchful eye alongside this prominent legal dispute, solidifying it as a top legal story.
