Nastee’s ‘Current Events’ Ignites Vermont Hip-Hop Scene: A ’90s Throwback Masterclass Earns Top Acclaim

The veteran of the Vermont hip-hop scene, Nastee, has finally unveiled his highly anticipated debut solo album, “Current Events,” released through his own AfterLyfe Music label. Hailed as a “90s-style master class in craftsmanship,” the project has immediately positioned itself as a significant release, drawing comparisons to legendary works and solidifying Nastee’s status as a formidable force in the music landscape.

Nastee: A Vermont Hip-Hop Pioneer

Nastee’s journey in hip-hop is deeply intertwined with the evolution of the Vermont music scene. A co-founder of the influential collective VT Union, alongside Dakota and the late DJ A_Dog, Nastee was instrumental in shaping the local sound during the late 2000s, when VT Union dominated with powerhouse live shows and a trilogy of acclaimed mixtapes. His previous mixtape, “The Album B4 the Album,” released in 2009, served as a precursor, showcasing his talent and hinting at the cohesive project to come.

‘Current Events’: A Sonic Homage to Hip-Hop’s Golden Age

“Current Events” is a deliberate and masterful throwback to the gritty, authentic sound of ’90s New York hip-hop. The album is characterized by a “hungry and urgent sound,” as described by critics, eschewing fleeting trends for a more enduring, structural approach to the genre. REKS channels the classic delivery of AZ on “Free,” providing a soulful and reflective moment on the album.
