Mumbai, India – Playback singing powerhouses Shashwat Singh and Nikhita Gandhi, now performing as the dynamic duo ShNik, have released their much-anticipated second single, “Kaari.” This new track is a bold exploration of contemporary Indian music, seamlessly blending the soulful essence of folk melodies with the infectious rhythms of hip-hop, solidifying ShNik’s unique “urban-folk” sound.
Following the success of their debut single “Kaahe,” “Kaari” delves into the intricate dynamics of relationships, portraying a familiar narrative of a misunderstanding between a couple. The Hindi word “Kaari” translates to “rough” or “harsh,” a sentiment that underpins the song’s lyrical theme. It captures a moment where a woman expresses her displeasure with the way she is being spoken to, while the man, seemingly oblivious, struggles to comprehend the cause of her discontent. This relatable exchange is beautifully framed by ShNik’s signature fusion of rustic folk textures and modern, urban soundscapes.
The Genesis of a Duo and a Signature Sound
The inspiration for “Kaari” and the formation of the duo ShNik can be traced back to the initial lockdown period in Goa. It was there that Shashwat Singh and Nikhita Gandhi first conceptualized a rustic folk melody that would eventually become the bedrock of their collaborative project. “Kaari started off as a rustic folk melody we came up with during the first lockdown in Goa, and then became the foundation of our entire duo, ShNik! We just fell in love with this entire sound of urban folk and Kaari is what led to the birth of ShNik,” shares Shashwat Singh. This pivotal moment marked the inception of their creative partnership, establishing a unique musical identity that honors Indian roots while embracing global contemporary influences.
Shashwat Singh and Nikhita Gandhi first crossed paths in 2010 at A.R. Rahman’s esteemed music school in Chennai. While both artists have carved out successful individual careers as sought-after playback singers in the Indian film industry, ShNik offers them a dedicated platform to pursue their passion for writing, composing, and producing original music. Their collaboration is a testament to their shared love for experimentation and their commitment to crafting music that is both artistically authentic and commercially resonant.
A Fusion of Heritage and Innovation
“Kaari” is jointly composed by Nikhita Gandhi and Shashwat Singh, with lyrics penned by Shashwat Singh. The track has been expertly mixed and mastered by the acclaimed Sunny MR, known for his work across various successful film projects and his ability to craft polished, impactful soundscapes. The accompanying visuals for “Kaari” further enhance the narrative, employing a storytelling approach that complements the song’s rich sonic tapestry.
Nikhita Gandhi, originally from Kolkata, and Shashwat Singh, hailing from Allahabad, bring a wealth of experience to ShNik. Gandhi has lent her voice to numerous chartbusters across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, and Kannada films, collaborating with industry stalwarts like A.R. Rahman and Pritam. Her solo career includes popular tracks like “Raabta,” “Ullu Ka Pattha,” and her viral hit “Jugnu” with Badshah. Singh, who also trained at A.R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, made his Bollywood debut with “Wat Wat Wat” from Tamasha and has since sung for films like Mohenjo Daro, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Sanju, alongside releasing his own indie singles. Their shared background in classical music training, combined with their exposure to diverse genres like R&B, rock, and hip-hop, fuels their distinctive “urban-folk” sound.
ShNik’s artistic vision extends beyond creating individual tracks; they aim to build a community around their music. “Our DNA is music, but we also want to create a community,” states Nikhita. “For now, though, we’re excited to share our voice, and we have a full year of music planned in this folk-hip-hop space.” This dedication to their craft and their audience signifies a long-term commitment to exploring and expanding the boundaries of independent Indian music.
“Kaari” is not just another single; it’s a carefully crafted piece of music that embodies ShNik’s evolving artistry. The fusion of traditional Indian folk elements with the raw energy of hip-hop offers a fresh perspective on contemporary Indian music. As ShNik continues to develop their catalogue, “Kaari” stands as a strong indicator of their potential to redefine the independent music scene, proving that a deep respect for heritage can harmoniously coexist with modern musical innovation. The release is now available on all major streaming platforms, inviting listeners to experience the captivating sounds of ShNik.
