Grammy-Winning Star Lil Nas X Faces Felony Charges After Naked Street Incident and Alleged Assault on Police Officers

Simone AdamsSimone AdamsAugust 25, 20254 Minutes read

Los Angeles, CA – Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, has pleaded not guilty to four felony charges following his arrest on August 21st, 2025. The acclaimed musician, known for genre-bending hits that have reshaped the modern hip-hop landscape, faces charges including three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. The incident unfolded early on a Thursday morning when authorities responded to calls regarding a naked individual on Ventura Boulevard in the Studio City neighborhood.

According to reports, officers encountered the 26-year-old artist, who was found walking on the major thoroughfare. When approached by law enforcement, Hill allegedly charged at the officers, leading to his arrest. Following the confrontation, he was taken to a local hospital due to concerns of a possible overdose before being transferred to jail. He spent the weekend in custody before appearing in court on Monday, August 25th, where he entered his plea.

The Encounter on Ventura Boulevard

Eyewitness reports and subsequent social media footage described the scene as chaotic. Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, was observed walking along Ventura Boulevard in the pre-dawn hours, reportedly wearing only underwear and boots. Some accounts suggest he was also seen placing an orange traffic cone on his head and engaging with onlookers. This unusual behavior prompted several concerned citizens to contact the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with Hill. However, authorities claim he aggressively charged at the responding officers. The criminal complaint filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office states that at least three officers sustained injuries during the alleged altercation. Police initially suspected a potential overdose, which led to his transport to a hospital for evaluation before he was taken to the Van Nuys Jail.

Serious Felony Charges and Legal Proceedings

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office officially charged Lil Nas X with four felonies. The specific charges include three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. These are significant charges that carry potential prison sentences if convicted. Prosecutors have emphasized the gravity of such alleged offenses, with District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stating, “Attacking police officers is more than just a crime against those individuals but a direct threat to public safety.”

During his arraignment, Lil Nas X pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bail was set at $75,000, with a critical condition attached: his release is contingent upon his regular attendance at drug treatment meetings or enrollment in an outpatient drug rehabilitation program. He was released from jail on Monday afternoon after posting bail. His next court appearance, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled for September 15th, 2025, where further details of the case are expected to emerge.

A Career Defined by Innovation and Success

Lil Nas X, born in Atlanta, Georgia, catapulted to global fame with his 2018 country-rap single “Old Town Road.” The song, a cultural phenomenon, broke records by remaining at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a staggering 19 weeks. Its success, which blended country and hip-hop elements, earned him widespread acclaim and two Grammy Awards. His career trajectory continued upward with subsequent hits like “Panini,” “Rodeo,” and his Grammy-nominated debut album “Montero” (2021), which featured chart-topping singles such as “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby.” His music and public persona are celebrated for their bold expression, particularly his openness about his identity as a gay artist, making him a significant figure in the music industry and a source of inspiration for many.

Defense and Family Support

Representatives for Lil Nas X have maintained his innocence and sought to contextualize the incident. His attorney, Christy O’Connor, told the court that the allegations represent an “absolute aberration” in an otherwise “remarkable” life, emphasizing that Hill has no prior criminal history. Drew Findling, another attorney associated with his defense, echoed this sentiment, stating, “He’s never been in trouble for a split second in his existence, we’re not going to let one little event change the trajectory of his amazing life.” They have also disputed claims that illegal drugs were involved, noting that test results are pending.

Lil Nas X himself broke his silence on social media following his release, posting a video to his Instagram story describing the experience as “terrifying.” He reassured fans, “Your girl is gonna be OK, y’all. That was fucking terrifying. That was terrifying. That was a terrifying last four days but your girl’s gonna be all right.” His father, Robert Stafford, also spoke to reporters, describing his son as “very remorseful” and confident that he would “get the help that he needs.” Stafford characterized the incident as a difficult moment but expressed belief in his son’s mental well-being and recovery.

Looking Ahead

The charges against Lil Nas X place him in a precarious legal position, with the potential for substantial prison time if convicted. The legal team’s strategy will likely focus on presenting the incident as an isolated event, possibly linked to temporary distress rather than criminal intent. As the hip-hop artist navigates these serious allegations, the music world and his devoted fanbase will be closely watching the unfolding legal story, with his next court date set for mid-September.
