Kassa Overall: Jazz Drummer Reimagines Hip-Hop’s Greatest Hits with Thrilling Improvisation on ‘CREAM’

Vik MehtaVik MehtaAugust 25, 20253 Minutes read

Kassa Overall, a Grammy-nominated drummer, producer, and emcee, is pushing the boundaries of contemporary music by seamlessly blending the intricate improvisations of jazz with the foundational rhythms of hip-hop. His latest album, “CREAM,” offers a bold and inventive reinterpretation of iconic rap songs, transforming them into vibrant jazz explorations. This ambitious project showcases Overall’s deep respect for both genres and his unique ability to forge new sonic landscapes from familiar territory.

A Bridge Between Worlds: Kassa Overall’s Musical Journey

Born and raised in Seattle, Kassa Overall’s musical foundation was laid early. He attended Garfield High School, an alma mater of musical legends like Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones, and began playing drums as a toddler. His formal education at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music honed his jazz sensibilities, but it was his parallel passion for hip-hop production and beat-making that set him on a distinct path. This duality often put him at odds with more traditional academic environments, yet it ultimately fueled his unique artistic vision. After years spent in the New York City jazz scene, performing with esteemed musicians such as Christian McBride and Ravi Coltrane, Overall returned to Seattle, continuing to cultivate a sound that inherently bridges distinct musical eras and styles. His previous albums, including “Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz” and “I Think I’m Good,” have already established him as a visionary artist unafraid to address personal and societal issues through his music, often weaving lyrical narratives about mental health and systemic injustices.

The “CREAM” Concept: Hip-Hop Classics Re-Birthed

“CREAM,” Overall’s fourth studio album, takes his genre-bending approach to a new level. Instead of sampling hip-hop tracks, he and his band meticulously reimagine eight seminal hip-hop songs entirely live, without edits, overdubs, or drum machines. This approach allows for genuine improvisation and a deep exploration of the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic complexities within the original compositions. The result is a collection that feels both reverent and revolutionary. Notable transformations on the album include Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa,” reimagined as a smooth Bossa Nova tune, and Digable Planets’ “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That),” which becomes an exhilarating post-bop scorcher. The album also features inventive renditions of tracks by Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, and Juvenile, among others, solidifying “CREAM” as a fresh take on the “Great American Songbook” of Black American music.

Influences and Artistic Philosophy

Overall draws a clear lineage from artists who have historically fused jazz and hip-hop. He cites Gil Scott Heron and jazz-sampling groups like A Tribe Called Quest, The Jungle Brothers, and Gangstarr as key influences, recognizing how hip-hop has long been a descendant of jazz’s improvisational and socially conscious spirit. “CREAM” is described by Overall as a “boomerang response” to his previous work, a return to the fundamental connection between these two powerful genres. His process involves deconstructing the essence of each hip-hop track and rebuilding it through the lens of jazz improvisation and arrangement. This dedication to live performance and organic creation has earned him critical acclaim, including a Doris Duke Artist Award, and accolades from top music publications.

A Visionary in Contemporary Music

Kassa Overall’s work consistently defies easy categorization, cementing his status as a truly original voice in modern music. His ability to translate the raw energy and lyrical depth of hip-hop into the sophisticated improvisational structures of jazz speaks to a profound understanding of both forms. “CREAM” is more than just an album of covers; it’s a vibrant testament to the enduring conversation between genres and a celebration of the rich legacy of Black American musical innovation. As he continues to tour and explore new sonic territories, Kassa Overall remains at the forefront of artists shaping the future of music, offering listeners stories that are both intellectually stimulating and deeply soulful.

This collection of reimagined hip-hop tracks highlights Overall’s mastery as an arranger and drummer, providing a fresh perspective on beloved songs. It is a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue between jazz and hip-hop, proving that these seemingly disparate genres can, in fact, offer a thrilling and cohesive musical experience.
