Beyond the Hype: Yung Drew, a 2025 Rapzilla Freshman, Readies “The Art of Letting Go” as a Testament to Vulnerability and Faith in Hip Hop

Simone AdamsSimone AdamsAugust 18, 20254 Minutes read

In the dynamic landscape of modern hip hop, artists often strive to carve out a unique identity. For Yung Drew, a 2025 Rapzilla Freshman, that journey has been one of unexpected turns, profound personal growth, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. As he prepares for the release of his highly anticipated album, “The Art of Letting Go,” the 26-year-old artist is set to reveal a new depth to his musical narrative, moving beyond superficial hype to deliver a powerful, heartfelt message.

The Unlikely Genesis of an Artist

Born Darius Mullin, the name “Yung Drew” began as a playful jab at a common trend in hip hop. He confesses he never initially harbored aspirations of becoming a rapper. His entry into the music world was serendipitous, prompted by a local Christian artist in Jacksonville, Florida, known as The Prophet. Around 2018 or 2019, an invitation to feature on a song unexpectedly ignited a passion within him. This initial foray quickly gained traction, with his first solo track, “Yeah Yeah,” garnering an impressive 7,000 streams on SoundCloud, signaling that his music resonated with an audience. Despite initial self-deprecating remarks about the quality of his early recordings, this early success solidified his path, leading him to fully embrace his calling as a hip hop artist. The playful origin of his stage name aside, it has become deeply intertwined with his brand, leading him to dismiss thoughts of a name change due to significant existing marketing and merchandise.

A Lyrical Architect: Influences and Evolution

Yung Drew’s musical style is a compelling fusion of influences, which he describes as a blend between the evocative lyricism of Earl Sweatshirt and the smooth, contemporary flow of Jack Harlow. Earl Sweatshirt holds a particularly significant place in his artistic development; his song “Grief” provided solace during a profoundly dark period in Yung Drew’s life, long before his spiritual awakening. This personal connection underscores the raw emotion he seeks to imbue in his own work. His commitment to authenticity extends to his lyrical content, which is deeply rooted in his Christian faith. Unlike many mainstream artists, Yung Drew consciously avoids profanity and derogatory language, offering a distinct and uplifting perspective within the hip hop genre. This thoughtful approach to his craft allows him to tackle complex themes with sincerity and depth.

“The Art of Letting Go”: A Transformative Project

“The Art of Letting Go” marks a pivotal moment in Yung Drew’s discography. Described as more hip-hop-based, lyrical, and rich with samples, this album signals a departure from his earlier, more “hype-driven” records. It is a serious, introspective project that delves into deeply personal experiences, including a challenging incident in Atlanta and the profound grief of losing a best friend. The album’s very title encapsulates its overarching theme of moving forward and processing life’s complexities. Available on platforms like Tidal and YouTube, its release is keenly awaited by fans eager to experience this new phase of his artistry. Looking ahead, Yung Drew has also hinted at another album, “All for Nothing,” which he envisions as a return to more upbeat, transcendent sounds, featuring collaborations with notable artists like Jered Sanders, Gavin, and Christyan Scarborough.

A Mission Rooted in Faith and Empathy

Beyond his musical aspirations, Yung Drew is driven by a profound mission to use his platform for positive change. His testimony reveals a challenging past, including a period in high school where he contemplated suicide. This dark phase preceded a transformative spiritual encounter during a “Disciple Now Weekend” retreat, where he felt a profound connection with God. This personal journey fuels his dedication to helping others navigate their own struggles with mental health, depression, anxiety, and addiction. A particularly moving moment in his career involved a 14-year-old girl who confessed his testimony had prevented her from taking her own life. This powerful interaction solidified his purpose: to reassure young people that their “pain has a purpose” and that a brighter tomorrow is always possible. His commitment extends to practical initiatives, with plans to establish “The Yung Drew Foundation,” a non-profit organization dedicated to using music as a means of outreach and a coping mechanism for those in need.

Milestones and Future Horizons

His recognition as a 2025 Rapzilla Freshman is a significant milestone, a testament to his burgeoning influence within Christian hip hop. He views this honor not just as personal acclaim but as a divine affirmation, acknowledging God’s role in opening doors for his unique sound and message. This acknowledgment, though unexpected, serves as strong motivation for continued growth and innovation in his music. Moments like participating in the HOLY SMOKE! cypher, where he was recognized as an equal by artists he deeply admired, stand out as personal “rock star moments” that validate his dedication and hard work. His journey, marked by early projects like “Hometown Heroes” and “Drewskii and Friends” (featuring MARTY), showcases a consistent upward trajectory fueled by perseverance and a strong work ethic. As Yung Drew continues to evolve as a music artist, his goal remains clear: to create authentic, impactful hip hop music that not only entertains but also inspires hope and healing in his listeners.
