Cardi B Denies Assaulting Security Guard in Viral Court Testimony; Claims Privacy Invasion During Pregnancy

C-DubC-DubAugust 27, 20254 Minutes read

Cardi B, the Grammy-winning hip-hop sensation, has vehemently denied assaulting a former building security guard, Emani Ellis, during a contentious 2018 encounter outside a Los Angeles obstetrician’s office. The rapper took the stand this week, offering her account of the incident that has since evolved into a civil lawsuit seeking significant damages. Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, testified that she did not touch, scratch, or spit on Ellis, asserting that the interaction was purely verbal and a result of her privacy being invaded while she was in the early stages of her first pregnancy.

The trial, held in Los Angeles County, has drawn considerable public attention, partly due to the rapper’s unfiltered and often humorous testimony, which has frequently gone viral across social media platforms. Cardi B, then four months pregnant and keeping her condition private, was on her way to a medical appointment when the alleged altercation with Ellis occurred. The obstetrician’s office had been closed to other patients to ensure Cardi B’s privacy.

Allegations and Damages Sought

Emani Ellis, the plaintiff in the case, claims that Cardi B physically assaulted her, alleging the rapper used a fingernail to cut her face and spat on her during the confrontation. Ellis’s lawsuit outlines claims of battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment. She further asserts that the incident left her humiliated, traumatized, and resulted in the loss of her job. Ellis is reportedly seeking $24 million in damages, a figure that includes compensation for medical expenses, emotional and physical suffering, and lost wages, though the precise amount was part of the original complaint rather than a stated demand during testimony.

Cardi B’s Account: Privacy Invasion and Verbal Dispute

Cardi B presented a starkly different narrative from the witness stand. She testified that Emani Ellis was filming her with a cellphone as she exited an elevator on the fifth floor of the medical building. Cardi B stated she felt her privacy was being violated, especially given the sensitive nature of her pregnancy, which she had not yet publicly announced. “I told her, ‘Why are you recording?'” Cardi B recounted. According to the rapper, Ellis initially apologized but continued to follow her, escalating the situation.

While admitting that the argument became heated and that they were at one point chest-to-chest, Cardi B insisted that the encounter never became physical. She described her nails at the time as “coffin-shaped” and not sharp enough to cause the alleged injury. Cardi B also noted that she felt intimidated by Ellis, describing her as “security-heavy” and someone who “could protect the building.”

Eyewitness Testimony and Defense Strategy

Tierra Malcolm, a receptionist at the doctor’s office, testified and largely corroborated Cardi B’s account. Malcolm stated that she intervened to break up the argument and did not witness any physical fighting between Cardi B and Ellis. Notably, Malcolm mentioned receiving a scratch on her own face during the intervention, which she believed came from Ellis, and did not observe any injuries on Ellis.

The defense also focused on the physical aspects of the encounter. Cardi B explained that her pregnancy made her feel “disabled” and that she was not in a position to engage physically. The trial saw some unusual exchanges, including questions from Ellis’s lawyer about Cardi B’s changing wigs and the shape of her acrylic nails, which generated viral moments and amusement from courtroom observers.

Cardi B’s legal team has characterized the lawsuit as a “money grab,” suggesting Ellis is attempting to profit from her fame. They also pointed out that Ellis filed the suit two years after the incident and questioned the absence of immediate photographic evidence of the alleged injuries.

Broader Context in Hip Hop and Celebrity Law

This legal battle adds another chapter to the ongoing narratives surrounding prominent figures in the hip hop music scene and the scrutiny they often face. For female artists in particular, public perception and media coverage can be intensely focused on personal lives and legal entanglements. Cardi B’s case highlights how celebrity status can amplify the impact of such disputes, turning courtroom testimony into viral social media content. The rapper’s candid and often humorous demeanor on the stand has resonated with many online, with some praising her resilience and authenticity. This trial also brings to the forefront the complex issues of privacy, especially for public figures, and the legal boundaries that apply even in private medical settings.

Conclusion of Testimony and Anticipation of Verdict

Cardi B concluded her testimony earlier this week, and the trial is nearing its end. Closing arguments are expected, followed by a verdict from the jury. Regardless of the outcome, Cardi B’s testimony has undeniably become a significant event in celebrity legal news, offering a raw glimpse into the intersection of fame, legal proceedings, and personal defense. The case continues to be one of the top stories, underscoring the high stakes involved when allegations of assault are made against one of the world’s most recognizable music stars.
