Cardi B Vindicated: Jury Finds Rapper Not Liable in $24 Million Security Guard Assault Lawsuit

Daniela BalboaDaniela BalboaAugust 27, 20253 Minutes read

In a swift and decisive victory, a Los Angeles jury has found Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B not liable for assault and battery, concluding a high-profile civil trial brought by a former security guard. Emani Ellis had accused the hip-hop star of scratching her face with a fingernail and spitting on her during an altercation outside a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office in February 2018, seeking $24 million in damages.

The jury, comprising six men and six women, deliberated for less than an hour before reaching a unanimous verdict on Tuesday, clearing Cardi B, whose legal name is Belcalis Almánzar, of all claims including assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and false imprisonment. The proceedings, which saw Cardi B take the stand for two days of often viral testimony, drew significant public attention.

Allegations and the Confrontation

Emani Ellis, who was working as a security guard at the medical building Cardi B visited, alleged that the rapper became enraged after Ellis recognized her and possibly began filming. Ellis claimed the encounter escalated violently, resulting in a scratch on her face requiring cosmetic surgery, spitting, and the use of racial slurs. She stated the incident led to her losing her job and suffering significant emotional trauma, impacting her career prospects.

During the trial, Ellis’s attorney, Ron Rosen Janfaza, argued that Cardi B’s conduct was inappropriate and demanded accountability, criticizing the rapper’s colorful language during her testimony as disrespectful to the court.

Cardi B’s Defense: Pregnancy, Privacy, and Denial

Cardi B, who was four months pregnant and keeping her condition a secret from the public at the time of the incident, presented a starkly different account. She testified that she was concerned about her privacy being violated by Ellis, whom she described as “security-heavy” and larger than her. Cardi B feared Ellis might expose her pregnancy, which was not yet public knowledge. She admitted to a heated verbal argument but vehemently denied any physical contact.

“I will say it on my deathbed. I did not touch that woman. I did not touch that girl. I didn’t lay my hands on that girl,” Cardi B declared during her testimony, a statement she reiterated outside the courthouse following the verdict. She recalled Ellis initially apologizing after being questioned about recording her, but the situation quickly became more heated, with Cardi B stating they were “chest-to-chest” at one point but that no physical assault occurred.

Cardi B’s testimony also included viral moments, such as her witty responses to questions about her wigs and her candid descriptions of her emotional state, notably exclaiming, “Because I’m pregnant! And this girl’s about to beat my ass!”

Witnesses Corroborate Rapper’s Account

Further bolstering Cardi B’s defense, a receptionist at the doctor’s office testified that she had to intervene in the altercation and that she saw Ellis reach for Cardi B. Crucially, the receptionist and the doctor Cardi B was seeing both testified that they did not witness Cardi B touch or scratch Ellis, and that the guard appeared to sustain a cut on her own forehead during the scuffle, not from the rapper.

Jury’s Swift Verdict and Reactions

The jury’s quick deliberation, concluding in under an hour, signaled a strong consensus. Outside the Alhambra courthouse, Cardi B expressed immense relief, thanking her legal team, the jurors, and the judge. She also issued a stern warning, stating, “The next time someone tries to do a frivolous lawsuit against me, I’m going to countersue. I’m going to make you pay, because this is not okay.” The rapper lamented that the trial had caused her to miss important family events, including her children’s first days of school.

Emani Ellis’s attorney, Ron Rosen Janfaza, indicated plans to appeal the decision, while Ellis herself stated she was content to have had her day in court.

Broader Impact in the Music Industry

This case highlights the intense public scrutiny and legal challenges faced by artists in the music industry. Cardi B’s spirited defense and subsequent vindication underscore the complexities of celebrity court battles. The viral nature of her testimony also speaks to the intersection of pop culture, social media, and the justice system, turning legal proceedings into widely discussed online stories. For top artists in the competitive landscape of hip hop, managing public perception and legal issues is an integral, albeit often taxing, part of their careers. This verdict, however, reaffirms Cardi B’s position, clearing her name in a significant legal dispute and allowing her to focus on her ongoing music career and personal life.
