Lil Nas X Describes ‘Terrifying’ Arrest and Jail Ordeal Amid Felony Charges

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellAugust 26, 20253 Minutes read

Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, has broken his silence following a recent arrest and subsequent felony charges, describing the experience as “terrifying.” The artist, 26, detailed the ordeal in a video posted to his Instagram Stories, assuring fans that he is “going to be all right.”

The Incident and Arrest

The situation began early on Thursday, August 21, 2025, when Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to calls reporting a naked man walking along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City. According to authorities and court documents, when officers approached, Hill allegedly charged at them. The encounter resulted in the arrest of the “Old Town Road” singer, who was then taken to a hospital due to concerns of a possible overdose. After several hours of medical evaluation, he was transferred to a jail in Van Nuys.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Lil Nas X was subsequently charged with four felony counts: three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. Prosecutors stated that the musician allegedly used “force and violence and inflict an injury” upon three officers. District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman emphasized the seriousness of such actions, stating, “Attacking police officers is more than just a crime against those individuals but a direct threat to public safety. Anyone who assaults law enforcement will face serious consequences, no matter who they are or how famous they may be.” If convicted on all counts, Hill could face up to five years in state prison.

On Monday, August 25, 2025, Lil Nas X appeared in court for his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. His attorney, Christy O’Connor, noted that this incident appeared to be an “aberrant episode in an otherwise productive life.” The judge set his bail at $75,000, significantly lower than the initial $300,000 recommendation, citing his lack of prior convictions and that he was not considered a flight risk. As a condition of his release, Lil Nas X was ordered to attend regular drug treatment, including four Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week or an outpatient program.

Lil Nas X’s Public Statement

In a video shared on his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, August 26, Lil Nas X addressed his fans directly. “Your girl is gonna be OK, y’all. OK? S—’s gonna be all right, s—’s gonna be all right,” he said, appearing shaken but ultimately reassuring. “S—. That was f—ing terrifying. That was terrifying. That was a terrifying last four days. But your girl is gonna be all right.” His father, Robert Stafford, also spoke to reporters outside the courthouse, stating his son was “very remorseful” and in “good spirits,” and requested prayers for his well-being.

Background and Career Context

Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, catapulted to global fame in 2019 with his genre-bending hit “Old Town Road,” a fusion of country and hip-hop that set a record for the longest run at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His subsequent music, including “Industry Baby” and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” has continued to achieve significant commercial and critical success, earning him multiple Grammy Awards and establishing him as a prominent figure in modern music and popular culture. Known for his bold artistic expression and social media presence, the artist has often challenged norms and sparked conversations within the hip-hop community and beyond. Prior to this incident, Lil Nas X had also spoken about experiencing partial facial paralysis earlier in the year, adding to public concern.

Legal Next Steps

Lil Nas X’s next court date is scheduled for September 15, 2025, for a pre-trial hearing. The case is being prosecuted by the Van Nuys Branch of the District Attorney’s Office, with the Los Angeles Police Department handling the investigation.

While his attorney has stated there is no evidence of drug use, the court-ordered treatment reflects the circumstances surrounding his arrest. The outcome of the legal proceedings remains to be seen, but the artist has expressed his intent to overcome this challenging period.
