Lil Nas X Arrested and Charged with Felonies After Public Altercation, Hospitalized for Suspected Overdose

Vik MehtaVik MehtaAugust 21, 20253 Minutes read

Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, was arrested in Los Angeles on August 21, 2025, following a highly publicized incident where he was found walking partially nude on Ventura Boulevard and subsequently charged with four felony counts, including battery with injury on a police officer and resisting an executive officer. The 26-year-old musician was hospitalized for a suspected overdose before being booked, and later pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was released on $75,000 bail with conditions that include attending regular Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

The Incident in Studio City

Authorities were first alerted to the situation in the early hours of Thursday, August 21st, responding to reports of a naked man wandering along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers encountered the artist, who was reportedly wearing only underwear and cowboy boots at one point, and later described as completely naked. Video footage circulating from the scene, captured by bystanders, showed the artist engaging in erratic behavior, including singing and interacting with passersby. When officers attempted to intervene, the situation escalated, with police alleging that Lil Nas X charged aggressively at them, resulting in injuries to at least three officers. This confrontation formed the basis of the subsequent felony charges.

Hospitalization and Legal Proceedings

Following the altercation, Lil Nas X was transported to a local hospital for a suspected overdose. After receiving treatment, he was transferred to the Van Nuys Jail. He spent the weekend in custody before appearing for his arraignment on Monday, August 25, 2025. At this hearing, he formally entered a plea of not guilty to the four felony counts lodged against him: three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. If convicted on all counts, the rapper could face significant prison time, with potential penalties ranging up to three years per charge or a combined total of up to five years in state prison. His bail was set at $75,000, with judicial conditions mandating regular participation in drug treatment programs and prohibiting the use or possession of illegal narcotics.

Background and Career Context

Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, burst onto the global music scene in 2019 with his genre-bending hit “Old Town Road,” which shattered records by spending 19 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His career has been marked by a unique blend of hip-hop, pop, and country influences, coupled with groundbreaking visuals and an unapologetic embrace of his identity, making him a significant figure in contemporary music and pop culture. He has garnered numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards, solidifying his position as a top artist in the industry. This legal entanglement marks his most serious public controversy to date, though he has previously courted attention for provocative marketing campaigns, such as the controversial “Satan Shoes” in 2021, and engaging performances that challenged societal norms. Earlier in 2025, he also publicly shared that he had experienced partial facial paralysis, which required hospitalization.

Statements and Public Reaction

Representatives for Lil Nas X, including his legal team, have emphasized that the incident was an “absolute aberration” in his life, highlighting his lack of prior criminal history. His father, Robert Stafford, also commented, stating that his son was remorseful and in need of support. The rapper himself broke his silence following his release from jail, posting a video on Instagram where he described the experience as “terrifying” but assured fans that he would be alright. The legal team expressed confidence in navigating the situation and maintaining the trajectory of his career.

The incident has generated widespread discussion across social media and within the music industry, prompting reflections on the pressures of fame, mental health, and the scrutiny faced by public figures. As the case progresses, Lil Nas X is scheduled for his next court appearance on September 15, 2025. The unfolding events are being closely watched, not only for their legal implications but also for how one of hip-hop’s most innovative artists will navigate this significant personal and professional challenge. These stories serve as a potent reminder of the complexities underlying public personas and the rigorous demands of the music world.
