Rap Album Sales Surge: Kendrick Lamar, Drake & Tyler, The Creator Lead Mid-August Charts

Hip-Hop Reigns Supreme: Top 5 Rap Albums Dominating Sales This Week

The landscape of hip-hop music continues to be a powerhouse in the global entertainment industry, with artists consistently pushing creative boundaries and achieving remarkable commercial success. As the week of August 23, 2025, unfolds, the sales charts reflect a dynamic blend of enduring legends and compelling new releases that are capturing the attention of fans worldwide. This week’s top-selling rap albums showcase a vibrant market driven by strong first-week performances, strategic releases, and the undeniable impact of established artists.

Leading the pack, Kendrick Lamar‘s critically acclaimed album, “GNX,” continues to demonstrate its monumental influence, even though it was released in late 2024. While its initial chart-topping debut was a significant moment, its sustained performance throughout 2025 solidifies its status as a dominant force. “GNX” achieved the historic feat of becoming the first hip-hop album to sell over one million units in the United States during 2025. Its presence on the charts remained formidable, notably holding the number one position on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart for an impressive 22 weeks, surpassing previous records. This enduring appeal, coupled with its significant overall sales for the year, underscores Lamar’s unparalleled command over the contemporary rap scene and makes “GNX” a perennial contender in any discussion of the year’s highest-selling albums.

Following closely, the collaborative effort “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” by Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR has made a significant mark on the 2025 sales charts. Released in February 2025, the album bowed at number one on the Billboard 200, moving an impressive 246,000 equivalent units in its first week. This launch not only marked PARTYNEXTDOOR’s first number-one album but also tied Drake with Jay-Z and Taylor Swift for the most chart-topping albums by a solo artist on the all-genre chart. The project’s success was further amplified by substantial streaming numbers, contributing significantly to its commercial triumph and reaffirming Drake’s consistent ability to deliver chart-dominating music.

Adding to the week’s notable performances, Tyler, The Creator‘s latest offering, “DON’T TAP THE GLASS,” has asserted its commercial strength with a powerful debut. Released on July 21, 2025, the album landed at number one on the Billboard 200, garnering 197,000 equivalent album units in its first week, a remarkable achievement given its release on a Monday, which compressed its tracking period to just four days. A significant portion of these sales, over 128,000 units, was driven by exclusive physical formats and merchandise bundles sold through Tyler’s webstore, highlighting his unique approach to fan engagement and sales strategy. This marks his fourth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200, further cementing his status as a consistent chart-topper in modern hip-hop.

The week also sees Gunna‘s latest project, “The Last Wun,” making a strong statement. Released in mid-August 2025, the album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, moving approximately 80,000 to 81,000 equivalent units in its first week. This performance, which included substantial streaming numbers from over 104 million on-demand streams, marks Gunna’s sixth album to land in the top three of the Billboard 200 and eighth charting release overall. Positioned as his final album under the YSL Records banner, “The Last Wun” represents a significant milestone, demonstrating Gunna’s enduring appeal and commercial resilience amidst career transitions, and continues to resonate strongly with his fanbase.

Rounding out the top sellers this week is Chance The Rapper with his recently released album, “STAR LINE.” Dropping on August 15, 2025, the independent project is projected to have sold around 22,000 album-equivalent units in its opening week, securing a debut within the top 20 of the Billboard 200. While these numbers reflect a different scale of commercial impact compared to some of the year’s blockbusters, “STAR LINE” signifies Chance The Rapper’s successful return after a six-year hiatus and highlights his dedicated connection with fans, proving his continued relevance in the hip-hop conversation.

The diverse performances of these artists underscore the robust health and evolving dynamics of the hip-hop music market in 2025. From the sustained dominance of established titans like Kendrick Lamar to the impactful debuts of recent releases, the genre continues to deliver compelling music that drives significant commercial success and captures the cultural zeitgeist. As the year progresses, these top-selling albums are not just metrics of sales but testaments to the artists’ creativity, strategic acumen, and the deep, ongoing connection they share with their dedicated audiences. The stories these sales figures tell are integral to the ongoing narrative of hip-hop’s enduring legacy and its powerful influence on global music trends.
