New Music Friday Frenzy: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Ella Mai Lead Blockbuster August 29th Release Slate

Jolene CooperJolene CooperAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025 ushers in a colossal wave of new music, with major players across hip-hop, R&B, and pop dropping highly anticipated projects. New Music Friday, August 29th, is set to be a landmark day for music lovers, featuring the return of influential artists and exciting new sonic explorations.

Hip-Hop’s Heavy Hitters Dominate the Airwaves

The hip-hop landscape is particularly vibrant this week, headlined by Joey Bada$$’s fourth studio album, ‘Lonely At The Top’. Originally slated for an earlier August release, the Brooklyn rapper’s project finally lands today via Columbia Records/Pro Era/Cinematic Music Group. The album, delayed due to label setbacks, promises a “grown-man evolution” following his 2022 release ‘2000’. ‘Lonely At The Top’ boasts an impressive roster of features, including collaborations with Westside Gunn, A$AP Ferg, Ty Dolla $ign, Ab-Soul, and Rapsody, with production credits from Statik Selektah, Boi-1da, and Hitmaka. The album delves into themes of fame, solitude, and self-awareness, offering sharp lyricism and layered production that are sure to resonate with hip-hop purists.

Adding to the hip-hop onslaught is Westside Gunn’s ‘Heels Have Eyes 2’, releasing August 28th. This 12-track project, described by Gunn himself as an “art class,” marks a significant contribution to a packed release week that also saw albums from peers like Earl Sweatshirt. Gunn, a consistent force in modern rap, continues to deliver his signature soundscapes that captivate his dedicated fanbase.

Furthermore, hip-hop royalty Rakim joins forces with producer Big Ghost LTD. for their collaborative album, ‘The Re-Up’. Dropping on August 29th, this project is hailed as a “full-blown rebirth of boom bap mastery.” The album features an army of lyrical assassins, including Eddie Kaine, Hus Kingpin, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, 38 Spesh, Skyzoo, Canibus, Method Man, Prodigy, and Kool G Rap, showcasing Rakim’s enduring pen game and Big Ghost’s grimy, layered production.

Sabrina Carpenter and Ella Mai Unveil New Chapters

In the pop and R&B spheres, Sabrina Carpenter makes a significant statement with her seventh studio album, ‘Man’s Best Friend’. Released today, the album is primarily a pop affair with disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock influences, crafted with producers Jack Antonoff and John Ryan. ‘Man’s Best Friend’ features the already popular lead single “Manchild” and the newly released second single, “Tears,” which comes with a video inspired by ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show.’ The album explores themes of sexuality, power, and vulnerability, marking a bold evolution for the artist.

From the R&B realm, Ella Mai returns with her new single ‘Tell Her’, a soulful collaboration with longtime producer Mustard. Released on August 29th, the track is an R&B anthem focusing on loyalty and reassurance within relationships. “Tell Her” blends Ella Mai’s velvety vocals with Mustard’s signature understated production, offering a sound that is both nostalgic and contemporary. This single marks Ella Mai’s first release since her 2024 EP ‘3’, signaling the beginning of an exciting new era for the Grammy Award-winning artist.

Cross-Genre Collaborations and Producer Powerhouse Releases

Adding to the diverse offerings, DJ Snake teams up with melodic rap superstar Don Toliver for the single ‘Something Wrong’. Released today, the track serves as a preview of DJ Snake’s forthcoming album ‘NOMAD’, set for September 26th. “Something Wrong” blends Snake’s deep-rooted hip-hop influence with Toliver’s distinctive vocals, creating a late-summer anthem that hints at the expansive sonic world of the upcoming album.

DJ Khaled also makes a momentous return, unveiling two singles from his upcoming fourteenth studio album, ‘Aalam of God’. The tracks include ‘Brother’, featuring NBA YoungBoy and Post Malone, a heartfelt single that blends genres and emotions, exploring themes of loyalty. The second offering is ‘You Remind Me’, a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture uniting Jamaican heavyweights Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, Bounty Killer, Rorystonelove, and Kaylan Arnold. These singles highlight Khaled’s unparalleled ability to bring together global talent and diverse sounds for what promises to be a career-defining album.

A Rich Tapestry of Sound

Beyond these headliners, the day is packed with other notable releases, including new music from The Beths (‘Straight Line Was a Lie’), Blood Orange (‘Essex Honey’), Erykah Badu and The Alchemist (‘Abi & Alan’), Margo Price (‘Hard Headed Woman’), and Hayley Williams (‘Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party’), among many others. This collective release day underscores the dynamic nature of the music industry and provides fans with an exceptionally rich playlist to explore.

Conclusion

New Music Friday, August 29, 2025, stands as a testament to the enduring power and diversity of contemporary music. With major statements from hip-hop titans like Joey Bada$$, Westside Gunn, and Rakim, alongside compelling new narratives from pop’s Sabrina Carpenter and R&B’s Ella Mai, and genre-bending collaborations from DJ Snake and DJ Khaled, this day offers something for every listener. It solidifies August 2025 as a significant month for new music stories, leaving fans eager for what these artists will deliver next.
