New Music Friday August 29, 2025: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter & Ella Mai Lead a Monumental Week in Hip-Hop and Pop

Sunita RaoSunita RaoAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025 arrived with a tidal wave of new music, showcasing the diverse and vibrant landscape of contemporary hip-hop and R&B, alongside pop’s ever-evolving sound. This New Music Friday, August 29th, saw highly anticipated projects from established hip-hop heavyweights and rising pop sensations alike, cementing the week as a significant moment in the year’s music releases. Alongside these major drops, an exceptional milestone in R&B and hip-hop history was celebrated, underscoring the enduring impact of these genres.

Joey Bada$$ Delivers “Lonely At The Top”

Brooklyn’s own Joey Bada$$ made a highly anticipated return to the music scene with his fourth studio album, “Lonely At The Top.” This project, following his acclaimed 2022 release “2000,” arrived on August 29th after a brief delay, with the Pro Era artist expressing his frustrations with label setbacks. The album showcases Joey Bada$$’s signature lyrical prowess and growth, reportedly featuring production from industry stalwarts like Statik Selektah, and collaborations with artists such as CJ Fly, Rome Streetz, Kai Ca$h, Ty Dolla $ign, and Ab-Soul. “Lonely At The Top” signals a new chapter for Bada$$, who has also been navigating a rising acting career. The anticipation for this release was palpable, with fans eager to hear his latest reflections and intricate flows, especially after his recent engaging rap battle performances.

Sabrina Carpenter Ascends with “Man’s Best Friend”

Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter continued her dominant streak with the release of her seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend.” Arriving on August 29th, the album is a concise, 12-track collection that dives deeper into her pop sensibilities, infused with elements of disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock. Produced in collaboration with Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, who also worked on her Grammy-winning 2024 album “Short n’ Sweet,” “Man’s Best Friend” explores themes of loyalty, complex relationships, and sexual power dynamics, often with her characteristic witty and provocative lyricism. The album’s lead single, “Manchild,” had already topped charts in multiple countries, including the US, UK, and Ireland, setting a high bar for the full project. The album’s artwork also garnered significant attention, sparking conversations about its themes and Carpenter’s artistic direction.

Ella Mai’s Soulful Return with “Tell Her”

Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Ella Mai made a powerful comeback on August 29th with her new single “Tell Her.” Produced by longtime collaborator Mustard, the track is a confident, slow-burning R&B anthem that blends Mai’s signature silky vocals with Mustard’s smooth, bouncing production. “Tell Her” delves into themes of trust, loyalty, and the need for emotional clarity in relationships, offering a mature perspective on modern love. This release marks Mai’s first new music since her 2024 EP “3” and reaffirms her status as a leading voice in contemporary R&B, continuing her tradition of crafting relatable and emotionally resonant music. The collaboration with Mustard harks back to their early success with hits like “Boo’d Up,” signaling a continued creative partnership.

Hip-Hop’s Diverse Soundscape Expands

The week’s hip-hop offerings were as varied as they were compelling. Westside Gunn, a consistent force in the genre, released “Heels Have Eyes 2,” the sequel to his earlier EP. This 12-track project, lauded for its gritty production and artistic curation, features collaborations with Benny The Butcher, Stove God Cooks, Skyzoo, and MIKE, showcasing Gunn’s unique ability to blend raw East Coast hip-hop with high-art aesthetics.

Adding to the dynamic hip-hop and R&B conversation, DJ Snake teamed up with Don Toliver for “Something Wrong,” a track blending hypnotic synths and smooth production from the French producer’s forthcoming album “NOMAD.” The collaboration highlights Toliver’s vocal talent and DJ Snake’s evolving sonic palette. Meanwhile, DJ Khaled’s “Brother,” featuring Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy, offered a genre-bending fusion, exploring themes of loyalty and family against a backdrop of trap percussion and country-inspired undertones, serving as a lead single from Khaled’s upcoming album “Aalam of God.”

Erykah Badu & The Alchemist’s “Abi & Alan”: A Unique Premiere

Fans eagerly awaiting the collaborative album “Abi & Alan” from Erykah Badu and The Alchemist faced some initial confusion regarding its release. While an August 29th date was widely anticipated, reports indicated potential delays or a unique release strategy. The pair planned to premiere the album exclusively during their “Luv Iz… Tour” performances before its eventual wider release on streaming platforms, a move that marked a pioneering approach in the music industry. This experimental rollout underscored the artistic vision shared between the neo-soul icon and the legendary producer.

Lil Baby’s “My Turn” Crowned Top Album of the 21st Century

In a monumental recognition of lasting influence, Lil Baby’s 2020 album “My Turn” was officially named Billboard’s No. 1 R&B/Hip-Hop Album of the 21st Century. This honor, based on extensive chart performance data from 2000 to 2024, highlighted “My Turn”‘s unprecedented chart dominance. The album spent 128 weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, setting a record for the most weeks in the top tier for an album by a male artist and outlasting major releases from peers like Kendrick Lamar and Drake. This distinction cements “My Turn” not only as a commercial success but as a defining work in modern hip-hop history, celebrated for its cultural impact and sustained resonance with fans.

The week of August 29, 2025, proved to be a significant one for new music, with Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ella Mai leading a charge of compelling releases across hip-hop and pop. Coupled with Lil Baby’s historic chart achievement, these stories painted a vivid picture of the genre’s current power and enduring legacy.
