New Music Friday, August 29, 2025: Joey Bada$$, Westside Gunn Lead a Star-Studded Day of Hip-Hop and R&B Releases

Jin SatoJin SatoAugust 29, 20254 Minutes read

The music industry buzzed with anticipation as August 2025 drew to a close, with Friday, August 29th, marking a significant day for new releases. Hip-hop fans were treated to highly awaited projects from Joey Bada$$ and Westside Gunn, while R&B enthusiasts celebrated new singles from Ella Mai and Sabrina Carpenter. This day showcased a diverse range of sounds and established artists continuing to push their creative boundaries.

Joey Bada$$ Delivers ‘Lonely At The Top’

Joey Bada$$ has finally released his highly anticipated fourth studio album, ‘Lonely At The Top’, on Columbia Records. The project, which faced some delays and a unique rollout, offers fans an 11-track collection that explores new sonic territories for the Brooklyn rapper. While Bada$$ built his career on a foundation of gritty, boom-bap hip-hop, ‘Lonely At The Top’ showcases his evolution, incorporating more melodic and R&B-infused production. Tracks like “Supaflee” featuring Bri Steves, produced by Kirk Knight, are highlighted for their upbeat, ’90s-inspired energy, reminiscent of The Neptunes. The album also features guest spots from artists such as Ab-Soul, Rapsody, and A$AP Ferg, though some reviews note a mixed bag regarding feature cohesion and overall album impact. Despite some criticisms regarding the album’s artistic evolution and label support for its release, ‘Lonely At The Top’ is largely seen as a personal and layered project that reaffirms Joey Bada$$’s ability to deliver impactful music.

Westside Gunn’s Cinematic Vision Continues with ‘Heels Have Eyes 2’

Westside Gunn, a prominent figure in the modern hip-hop landscape, has dropped his latest project, ‘Heels Have Eyes 2’, via Griselda Records and Roc Nation Distribution. This 12-track album serves as a sequel to his earlier EP, ‘Heels Have Eyes,’ and continues Gunn’s unique fusion of music, art, fashion, and wrestling culture. The album’s cover art, depicting a wrestling-themed motif, pays homage to his “4th Rope” persona. ‘Heels Have Eyes 2’ dives deep into Gunn’s signature style, characterized by sharp bars and a consistent, experimental approach. While many of Gunn’s projects feature a deep roster of collaborators, this particular album leans towards a more focused selection of features, including appearances from Benny The Butcher, Stove God Cooks, and MIKE, with production handled by established names like DJ Muggs and Harry Fraud. The release coincides with the annual “Westside Gunn Day” celebration in Buffalo, N.Y., further cementing his impact on his community and artistic presence.

Ella Mai and Sabrina Carpenter Showcase Pop and R&B Prowess

Ella Mai made a notable return with her new single “Tell Her,” produced by the acclaimed DJ Mustard. The track marks her first release since her 2024 EP ‘3’ and continues her successful collaboration with Mustard, who has been instrumental in her career since her debut single “Boo’d Up.” “Tell Her” explores themes of modern love, trust, and emotional clarity, with Mai delivering a confident and assertive performance that balances vulnerability with strength. The song also notably interpolates Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name,” earning the iconic trio a songwriting credit.

Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter also graced listeners with new music, releasing her single “Man’s Best Friend.” Carpenter, currently riding a wave of success following her hit single “Manchild,” delivers an album complete with 12 tracks. Reviews suggest that ‘Man’s Best Friend’ features Carpenter at her most explicit and vulnerable, exploring themes of sexuality and empowerment.

A Diverse Array of Singles and Album Additions

Beyond the headline acts, Friday, August 29, 2025, saw a wealth of other significant releases:

* DJ Khaled launched his next musical era with two new singles, “You Remind Me” and “Brother.” “You Remind Me” is a dancehall-heavy track featuring Jamaican legends Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, and Bounty Killer, sampling Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh.” “Brother” offers a more introspective tone, featuring Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy, focusing on themes of loyalty and survival. Both tracks precede Khaled’s upcoming 14th studio album, ‘Aalam of God.’
* DJ Snake teamed up with Don Toliver for the late-summer anthem “Something Wrong,” a track that blends Snake’s production with Toliver’s smooth vocals. This single offers a glimpse into DJ Snake’s forthcoming album, ‘NOMAD.’
* The Kid LAROI continued his prolific 2025 output with the single “She Don’t Need To Know,” accompanied by a video starring Carmen Electra. The track sees LAROI reuniting with his frequent collaborators and explores themes of relationship dynamics.
* Fridayy released his new single “Below Zero,” an emotionally charged track that captures a moodier transition into the colder months. The singer described the song as being about feeling numb after giving too much to unappreciative situations.
* D Smoke made his debut on Death Row Records with his fourth studio album, ‘Wake Up Supa.’ The 14-track project features collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Lucky Daye, and others, delving into themes of awakening, resilience, and community.

This release day proved to be a testament to the vibrant and evolving state of the music industry, offering something for every listener and highlighting the continued power of established artists to generate significant cultural moments. The variety of genres and the caliber of artists involved underscored why “New Music Friday” remains a cornerstone event for fans eager to discover the latest sounds and stories in music.
