T-Pain Celebrated with BMI President’s Award for Groundbreaking Influence on R&B and Hip-Hop

Sunita RaoSunita RaoAugust 29, 20253 Minutes read

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, held in Los Angeles on August 28th, honored musical innovators and rising stars, with a particular spotlight on the monumental career of T-Pain, who received the prestigious BMI President’s Award. This top honor celebrates artists whose creative vision and global impact have significantly shifted the sound of music, a distinction T-Pain has earned through his nearly two decades of groundbreaking work in the industry.

T-Pain’s Transformative Impact on Music

T-Pain, born Faheem Rashad Najm, has been a pivotal figure since the mid-2000s, revolutionizing the use of Auto-Tune and blending R&B and hip-hop sensibilities to create a signature sound that has influenced a generation of artists. His pioneering approach to vocal production transformed Auto-Tune from a corrective tool into an expressive instrument, leaving an indelible mark on popular music. This impact is echoed by artists like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Future, who have all incorporated similar techniques into their work. T-Pain’s career is marked by a formidable catalog of chart-toppers, including hits like “Buy U a Drank,” “I’m Sprung,” and “I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper).” He has achieved over 50 million singles sold and multiple number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, earning him 28 BMI Awards, three BMI Songwriter of the Year titles, and the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year award. Accepting the President’s Award, T-Pain shared a reflective message: “Every journey has a beginning, a middle and an end…. Don’t let anyone dictate your time or how fast you get to the finish line. Let yourself be your own time measurement.”

GloRilla Earns Impact Award and Songwriter of the Year

Joining T-Pain in the evening’s major accolades was GloRilla, who received the BMI Impact Award and was also named BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year. The BMI Impact Award recognizes her role as a “transformative force in hip-hop” and her “groundbreaking artistry, creative vision, and influence on the future of music.” Her breakout success with “FNF (Let’s Go)” in 2022 propelled her to stardom, followed by Hot 100 entries like “Yeah Glo!,” “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion, and “TGIF.” GloRilla’s win as Songwriter of the Year, shared in a three-way tie with Tay Keith and Mike Dean, acknowledges her contributions to three of the year’s most-performed songs, including “TGIF,” “Wanna Be,” and “Yeah Glo!” Upon receiving her awards, GloRilla encouraged aspiring artists, stating, “Keep y’all’s foot on the gas. Don’t let nobody tell y’all what y’all can’t do.”

“Not Like Us” Dominates as Song of the Year

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards also celebrated the top songs, songwriters, and producers of the past year. Kendrick Lamar’s massive hit “Not Like Us” was crowned BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. The track, co-written by Lamar, Sounwave, the late Ray Charles, and Sean Momberger, achieved significant commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the longest-charting rap song in the chart’s history with 53 consecutive weeks. This recognition underscores the song’s profound cultural and commercial impact within the hip-hop community.

Sounwave Named Producer of the Year

Producer Sounwave was recognized as BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year for his extensive work, including his pivotal contributions to “Not Like Us,” “Euphoria,” and “6:16 in LA.” His production credits also extend to major artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, highlighting his versatility and broad influence across genres. Sounwave’s consistent excellence in production has cemented his reputation as a leading force in the music industry.

Sony Music Publishing Recognized as Publisher of the Year

On the business side, Sony Music Publishing was named BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Publisher of the Year, representing 23 of the year’s most-performed songs. This award acknowledges the publisher’s significant role in supporting and promoting the careers of its songwriters and contributing to the success of major hits.

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards ceremony, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, celebrated the creative architects of modern music, underscoring the collaborative nature of the industry and the enduring influence of R&B and hip-hop music. The event highlighted a mix of established legends and emerging talent, all contributing to the dynamic evolution of these genres.
