PDX Hip-Hop Week Celebrates a Decade of Uniting Portland Through Culture and Music

Brianna JohnsonBrianna JohnsonAugust 23, 20253 Minutes read

Portland, Oregon is poised to celebrate a significant milestone as the 10th Annual PDX Hip-Hop Week commences, running from August 20th to August 26th, 2025. This week-long festival stands as a testament to the enduring power of hip-hop culture to foster unity, education, and vibrant community engagement.

The Genesis of a Movement: From a Single Day to a Week-Long Celebration

What began in 2015 as a singular event on the steps of Portland City Hall has blossomed into a comprehensive, week-long movement dedicated to celebrating and elevating Portland’s rich hip-hop scene. The initial impetus for Portland Hip-Hop Day, and subsequently the week-long iteration, was to bridge existing divides and address concerns between the city’s burgeoning hip-hop community and various municipal agencies. Founders Idris “STARCHILE” O’ferrell, a legendary local party host and event curator, and David “DJ O.G. ONE” Jackson, a seasoned DJ, producer, entrepreneur, and activist, recognized the need for a platform that would foster dialogue and mutual understanding.

Their collaboration with city officials, including former Mayor Charlie Hales who proclaimed October 15th as “Portland Hip-hop Day” in 2015, laid the groundwork for what has become an annual tradition. The event officially expanded into a week-long celebration in 2018, solidifying its mission to “UNIFY, AMPLIFY, EDUCATE, & ELEVATE” the hip-hop culture. Sadly, STARCHILE passed away in 2018, but his legacy continues to be honored, with DJ O.G. ONE carrying the torch and expanding the concept nationwide.

Navigating Portland’s Hip-Hop Landscape: Resilience and Growth

The history of hip-hop in Portland is marked by both innovation and significant challenges. The scene, rooted in the city’s historic Black neighborhoods in Northeast Portland, faced hurdles such as discrimination and venue closures that made it difficult for artists to find consistent performance spaces. Despite these obstacles, Portland’s hip-hop artists, promoters, and fans have demonstrated remarkable resilience, evolving and adapting to create a thriving cultural ecosystem. The current era sees local talent gaining national recognition, with artists like Aminé and Dodgr making waves, building upon the foundations laid by pioneers such as Vursatyl, Libretto, HANiF, and Cool Nutz.

A Decade of Culture: The 2025 PDX Hip-Hop Week Lineup

The 10th-anniversary celebration promises an extensive and diverse schedule, showcasing every facet of hip-hop culture. The week officially kicks off on Wednesday, August 20th, with the PDX Hip-Hop Week Kick-Off / Re-Proclamation Ceremony at Director’s Park, hosted by co-founder DJ O.G. ONE. This event will feature live DJs, dancers, emcees, and art, setting the tone for the week’s festivities. Other highlights include the “Skate n Shake” at Oaks Park, offering a fun, active start to the celebrations, and a “Wednesday Night Social” at Holocene for relaxed community connection.

Mid-week activities include “Hip Hop Bingo” hosted by DJ O.G. One at Alberta Street Pub, testing attendees’ knowledge of hip-hop classics. The weekend heats up with the “Slammin’ Steps Dance Fest” and “Laced Up PDX” on Saturday, August 23rd, showcasing the city’s dynamic dancers and sneaker culture, respectively. The “Elation Hip Hop Festival” will also take place, spotlighting Christian rappers and poets, reflecting hip-hop’s multifaceted nature. Educational and community-focused events, such as the “Beyond the Beats” documentary screening and panel discussion, and a “Hip-Hop W(H)ealthy Walk,” are also on the agenda, underscoring the event’s commitment to knowledge and well-being.

The Star Awards: Honoring Legacy and Impact

Culminating the week of celebrations on Sunday, August 24th, are the highly anticipated “2025 Star Awards” held at The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts. This free ceremony is dedicated to honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to Portland’s hip-hop culture, recognizing their invaluable impact and paving the way for future generations. This year’s event will feature performances by notable artists and present awards to community pillars. Honorees like Converge Media’s Besa Gordon and Omari Salisbury are recognized for their unwavering commitment to showcasing the positive aspects of Portland’s hip-hop scene. The event is skillfully hosted by DJ O.G. ONE and radio personality DJ Klyph, ensuring a night filled with inspiration and recognition of the diverse talent that defines Portland’s hip-hop stories.

A Decade of Dedication

PDX Hip-Hop Week has evolved from a crucial intervention into a cornerstone event that consistently reaffirms the values of unity, respect, and community at the heart of hip-hop. The past decade has seen the festival grow in scope and impact, providing a vital platform for artists, fostering intergenerational connections, and actively working to uplift the culture. As the 10th anniversary celebration kicks off, it not only commemorates a significant milestone but also looks forward to continuing its mission of building and strengthening the vibrant hip-hop community in Portland for years to come. This top-tier celebration serves as a powerful reminder of hip-hop’s enduring legacy and its capacity to inspire and unite.
