New Music Friday August 29, 2025: Hip-Hop and R&B Dominate with Top Releases from Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Ella Mai, and a Pantheon of Icons

Sunita RaoSunita RaoAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025, August 29th, ushered in a veritable tidal wave of new music, solidifying its place as one of the most significant release days of the year. The hip-hop and R&B landscape, in particular, was abuzz with major album drops and compelling singles from established titans and rising stars alike. From the introspective rhymes of Joey Bada$$ and the genre-bending pop of Sabrina Carpenter to the soulful R&B narratives of Ella Mai and the lyrical mastery of hip-hop legends, this New Music Friday offered a rich tapestry of sounds and stories for fans worldwide.

Hip-Hop’s Heavyweights Deliver Landmark Projects

The week saw the highly anticipated return of several key figures in hip-hop, each offering distinct artistic statements. Joey Bada$$ finally unveiled his fourth studio album, ‘Lonely At The Top’, on August 29th, after a slight delay attributed to label issues. This 11-track project delves into themes of fame, solitude, and self-awareness, showcasing Bada$$’s continued evolution as a lyricist. Collaborations with artists like Ab-Soul, Rapsody, and A$AP Ferg, as well as a notable feature from Westside Gunn on “SWANK WHITE,” add layers of depth and cross-genre appeal to the album, reinforcing Bada$$’s position among the top tier of contemporary MCs.

Adding to the week’s hip-hop fervor, Westside Gunn released ‘Heels Have Eyes 2’, a direct sequel to his earlier EP, on August 28th. This project continues Gunn’s unique blend of gritty East Coast hip-hop, art, fashion, and professional wrestling, a theme evident in its striking cover art and track titles. Featuring appearances from Griselda brethren Benny The Butcher and Stove God Cooks, alongside MIKE and others, the album cements Gunn’s distinctive sound and visual aesthetic, arriving just in time for the annual “Westside Gunn Day” celebration in Buffalo, which also featured performances by artists like Joey Bada$$, Bun B, and Styles P.

Meanwhile, hip-hop royalty Rakim joined forces with producer Big Ghost Ltd. for their collaborative album, ‘The Re-Up’, released on August 29th. This project serves as a powerful testament to Rakim’s enduring lyrical prowess, featuring a diverse cast of collaborators including Eddie Kaine, Hus Kingpin, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, Canibus, Method Man, and Prodigy. The release also arrives on the heels of significant recognition for Rakim, including receiving the Peabody Medal and an honorary degree, underscoring his monumental impact on the music world.

R&B’s Leading Ladies and Iconic Voices

On the R&B front, Ella Mai made a highly anticipated comeback with her new single, ‘Tell Her’, dropping on August 29th. Produced by her long-time collaborator Mustard, the track showcases Mai’s signature soulful delivery against a smooth, rhythmic beat. ‘Tell Her’ explores the complexities of modern love, emphasizing themes of trust, loyalty, and the necessity of honesty in relationships. This release marks a significant step forward for the Grammy-winning artist, signaling a new chapter in her career and continuing her legacy of crafting heartfelt R&B anthems.

DJ Khaled also made a significant return, releasing two new singles on August 29th that preview his forthcoming fourteenth studio album, ‘Aalam of God’. The dancehall-infused track ‘You Remind Me’ brings together a star-studded lineup including Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, and Bounty Killer, offering a vibrant conclusion to the summer season. In contrast, the single ‘Brother’ leans into a more reflective tone, featuring an unexpected yet powerful collaboration with Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy. This track delves into themes of loyalty, family, and resilience, showcasing Khaled’s ability to curate diverse sonic landscapes and bring together artists from different corners of the music industry.

Pop Sensations and Diverse Genre Contributions

Sabrina Carpenter continued her meteoric rise with the release of her seventh studio album, ‘Man’s Best Friend’, on August 29th. Co-produced by Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, the album is primarily a pop offering infused with elements of disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock. It features the charting lead single ‘Manchild’ and the concurrently released single ‘Tears’. The album’s provocative cover art sparked considerable discussion, with Carpenter herself explaining the imagery as an exploration of control and choice. ‘Man’s Best Friend’ solidifies Carpenter’s status as a dominant force in pop music, known for her witty lyrics and bold artistic direction.

Beyond these headliners, the week’s releases offered a broad spectrum of talent. The Beths delivered their smart guitar rock with ‘Straight Line Was a Lie,’ while Blood Orange brought a shimmering groove with ‘Essex Honey.’ The Alchemist teamed up with Erykah Badu for the hypnotic ‘Abi & Alan,’ and Margo Price showcased her grit on ‘Hard Headed Woman.’ Hayley Williams surprised listeners with the sharp ‘Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party,’ among many other notable albums and singles that rounded out a packed New Music Friday, highlighting the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the music industry.

In conclusion, August 29, 2025, proved to be a monumental day for new music, particularly for the hip-hop and R&B genres. The top stories of the week revolved around significant artistic statements from established stars and the continued emergence of compelling new sounds. With major album releases from Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Westside Gunn, and Rakim, alongside impactful singles from Ella Mai, DJ Khaled, Post Malone, and NBA YoungBoy, this New Music Friday underscored the vibrant creativity and diverse talent shaping the current music landscape.
