Young Thug Expresses Forgiveness for Gunna: “I Can’t Even Hate Him” Amidst YSL RICO Fallout

Andre WashingtonAndre WashingtonSeptember 7, 20254 Minutes read

In a surprising turn following years of public tension and legal battles, acclaimed hip hop artist Young Thug has revealed a significant softening of his stance towards his former close collaborator and friend, Gunna. Speaking candidly on the “Perspectives With Bank” podcast, Young Thug stated, “I love you bruh… I poured so much into him, I can’t even hate him,” indicating a profound emotional shift concerning their fractured relationship.

This declaration comes as a stark contrast to recent events, including a leaked track tentatively titled “Closing Arguments,” where Young Thug appeared to vocally diss Gunna and other associates from the YSL (Young Stoner Life/Young Slime Life) collective. The leaked song, which circulated widely across online platforms, fueled speculation of an irreconcilable rift, labeling Gunna and others as “rats” in the aftermath of the YSL RICO case.

The Rise of YSL and a Brotherhood in Hip Hop

Young Thug, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, and Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens, emerged as two of the most influential voices in contemporary hip hop, forging a deep creative and personal bond. Their collaboration, largely facilitated by Young Thug’s YSL Records, produced numerous hits and cemented their status as a formidable duo. From their initial meeting in 2015, their chemistry was undeniable, a testament to the shared artistic vision and brotherhood that often defines relationships within the music industry.

Young Thug was instrumental in Gunna’s rise, investing heavily in his career, reportedly spending millions without profiting directly. This mentorship and familial support underscored the strong foundation of their partnership, a sentiment Young Thug clearly cherishes, even amidst current complexities.

The Shadow of the YSL RICO Case

The trajectory of their relationship, along with that of many YSL affiliates, was drastically altered by the sprawling RICO indictment filed in May 2022. Young Thug was identified as a central figure in the alleged “criminal street gang” YSL, facing numerous charges. Gunna, too, was indicted. The sheer scale of the charges and the prosecution’s strategy, which included using rap lyrics as evidence, cast a long shadow over the entire hip hop community.

A pivotal moment occurred in December 2022 when Gunna accepted an Alford plea deal. This legal maneuver allowed him to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge while maintaining his innocence, acknowledging YSL’s gang ties as part of the agreement. For Young Thug and his supporters, this move was perceived as a betrayal that significantly weakened their defense and jeopardized their collective. Gunna has maintained that he did not cooperate with authorities beyond his own plea.

Years of Legal Battles and Lingering Tensions

Young Thug himself eventually pleaded guilty to reduced gun and drug charges in October 2024, a resolution that allowed him to avoid a racketeering conviction and secure his release after more than two years of incarceration. He remains under strict probation, which includes limitations on his activities and travel. The period of his confinement was marked by intense legal scrutiny, leaked jail calls, and the aforementioned “Closing Arguments” track, which directly addressed his grievances.

In the leaked song, Young Thug explicitly named several former associates, including Gunna, as “rats.” The raw, confrontational nature of the track reflected deep-seated anger and a sense of personal betrayal stemming from the legal proceedings and the perceived consequences of their plea deals.

A New Chapter: “I Can’t Even Hate Him”

In his recent interview on the “Perspectives With Bank” podcast, Young Thug offered a nuanced perspective on his feelings towards Gunna. He expressed that while he believed he harbored hate during his time in jail, that sentiment has since dissipated. “I poured so much into him, I can’t even hate him,” he stated, highlighting the depth of their past connection. He elaborated that the pain he experienced was not just anger, but a profound sense of loss due to perceived betrayal. “I lost a n to betrayal. You signing that one piece of paper could give me a life sentence… You gon’ let a piece of paper end all this sh*t?” he reflected, articulating the complex emotions tied to the legal system’s impact on loyalty and friendship.

This interview provides a rare glimpse into the human side of the high-stakes hip hop world, revealing an artist grappling with the aftermath of intense legal pressure and personal relationships strained by circumstances beyond their control.

The Enduring Impact on Hip Hop

Young Thug’s evolving stance suggests a potential path toward reconciliation, though the complexities of their shared history and the legal entanglements are unlikely to be easily resolved. The YSL RICO case has had a profound impact on the careers of many artists involved, sparking wider debates about the use of artistic expression as evidence and the pressures faced by hip hop artists. As Young Thug navigates his post-probation life and continues his artistic endeavors, his reflections on loyalty, betrayal, and forgiveness offer a compelling narrative that resonates beyond the music industry, speaking to universal themes of human connection and resilience. The future of their personal and professional relationship remains to be seen, but Thug’s recent interview marks a significant moment in their intertwined story, signaling a move away from animosity and towards a more complex understanding of their past.
