Brianna JohnsonBrianna JohnsonSeptember 7, 20254 Minutes read

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, concluded with a night celebrating musical achievements, groundbreaking moments, and powerful artistic statements. In a spectacular display of talent and recognition, Lady Gaga was honored with the prestigious Artist of the Year award, capping a year where she also led the nominations. Making history on the global stage, K-pop sensation Rosé secured the coveted Song of the Year award for her collaboration “APT.” with Bruno Mars, marking the first time a K-pop artist has claimed one of the MTV VMAs’ major categories. The ceremony, hosted by LL Cool J, also saw Ariana Grande take home the night’s biggest prize, Video of the Year.

Lady Gaga’s Artistic Dominance Recognized

Lady Gaga, the night’s most nominated artist with a remarkable twelve nods, further cemented her status by winning Artist of the Year. Known for her chameleon-like artistry and profound connection with her audience, Gaga accepted the award early in the evening. In a passionate acceptance speech, she articulated her deep philosophy on artistry, stating, “Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world… a discipline and craft meant for reaching into someone’s heart, where it grows its roots and reminding them to dream.” In addition to this top honor, Gaga also secured the Best Collaboration award alongside Bruno Mars for their track “Die with a Smile.” Demonstrating her unparalleled work ethic, Gaga departed the VMAs shortly after receiving her award to fulfill a commitment at her “Mayhem Ball” tour concert at Madison Square Garden, highlighting her dedication to her fans and her extensive performance schedule.

K-Pop Breaks New Ground with Historic Win

The 2025 MTV VMAs etched a monumental milestone for K-pop as Rosé of BLACKPINK became the first K-pop artist to win Song of the Year. Her chart-topping global hit “APT.,” a vibrant collaboration with Bruno Mars, earned her this significant accolade. This victory is particularly significant, as while other K-pop acts have received nominations and won in other categories, Rosé’s win marks the first time a Korean artist has triumphed in one of the VMAs’ most prominent awards. The song “APT.” had a record-breaking night, securing eight nominations for a K-pop act, including Video of the Year and Best Collaboration, underscoring its immense global impact. Accepting the award, an visibly emotional Rosé delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude to Bruno Mars and reflecting on her personal journey. “As my therapist always reminds me, I want to thank myself—the me who didn’t give up even in my hardest moments,” she shared, dedicating the win to her younger, dreaming self. This historic win powerfully underscores K-pop’s escalating global influence and its growing recognition across the world’s major music award ceremonies.

Hip Hop’s Enduring Power on Display

The Best Hip Hop category at the 2025 VMAs showcased the genre’s vibrant and diverse talent. Doechii emerged as the winner for her compelling track “Anxiety,” a significant win in a category filled with formidable contenders. The nominees included Drake for “NOKIA,” Eminem featuring Jelly Roll for “Somebody Save Me,” GloRilla featuring Sexyy Red for “WHATCHU KNO ABOUT ME,” and Kendrick Lamar for his immensely popular diss track “Not Like Us.” The strong representation of these artists and their impactful songs reaffirms the continued evolution and enduring relevance of hip hop within the contemporary music landscape. The category’s results highlight the ongoing creative output and cultural significance of the hip hop music scene.

Other Major Awardees and Special Honors

Ariana Grande captured the prestigious Video of the Year award for her song “Brighter Days Ahead.” Sabrina Carpenter was recognized with the Album of the Year award for “Short n’ Sweet,” and also took home the award for Best Pop Artist. Alex Warren earned the Best New Artist award for his track “Ordinary,” demonstrating his rapid rise in the music industry.

The ceremony also paid tribute to music legends through special awards. Mariah Carey was honored with the esteemed Video Vanguard Award, a recognition of her immense contributions to music and visual artistry. Busta Rhymes received the inaugural Rock the Bells Visionary Award, celebrating his pioneering impact on hip hop culture, while Ricky Martin was recognized with the first-ever Latin Icon Award for his significant influence in Latin music. Both Busta Rhymes and Ricky Martin delivered electrifying performances that showcased their enduring legacies.

A Night of Diverse Achievements

The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards celebrated a wide spectrum of musical talent, from established superstars to emerging artists, and critically, honored the growing global impact of diverse genres. Lady Gaga’s Artist of the Year win and Rosé’s historic Song of the Year achievement underscore the evolving landscape of music recognition. The night’s proceedings at the UBS Arena, filled with memorable performances and emotional acceptance speeches, reaffirmed the VMAs’ position as a pivotal event in celebrating the artistry and innovation that defines contemporary music.
