From Beats to Superpowers: Marvel’s ‘The Legend Has It’ Comic Series Honors Hip-Hop Icons at NYCC Debut

Simone AdamsSimone AdamsOctober 6, 20253 Minutes read

New York City – In a groundbreaking fusion of music and sequential art, Marvel Comics, in collaboration with Mass Appeal, has launched “The Legend Has It…,” a new comic book series that reimagines legendary hip-hop artists as powerful superheroes. The highly anticipated series made its official debut at New York Comic Con (NYCC) on October 10, 2025, celebrating the rich legacy and storytelling inherent in both genres.

A Celebration of Hip-Hop’s Pantheon

The “The Legend Has It…” series, brought to life by writer Brandon Thomas and artist Sanford Greene, is inspired by Mass Appeal’s existing album initiative of the same name. The core concept is to translate the iconic status and influential narratives of hip-hop’s pioneers into the vibrant world of Marvel’s superheroes. The inaugural issue shines a spotlight on a formidable lineup of artists, including tributes to Nas, DJ Premier, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, Raekwon, Big L, De La Soul, and Slick Rick.

Nas, a co-founder of Mass Appeal and one of the featured artists, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “Working with Marvel on this comic is a celebration of Hip Hop and its legacy,” Nas stated. “There’s a story we tell through our music, and watching that energy come to life in these pages is a tribute to the culture that shaped us and continues to inspire generations”. This sentiment underscores the series’ ambition to bridge music, myth, and legacy, offering a unique narrative that resonates with fans of both hip-hop and comic book culture.

Creative Visionaries Behind the Panels

Brandon Thomas, known for his work on “Black Lightning,” and Sanford Greene, celebrated for his art in “Bitter Root” and “Doom,” are the creative forces driving “The Legend Has It…”. Their collaboration aims to blend Mass Appeal’s deep cultural roots with Marvel’s signature epic storytelling, creating a visually dynamic and narratively compelling experience. Greene’s artwork is expected to bring these reimagined hip-hop titans to life in a manner that honors their musical personas while embracing superhero archetypes.

NYCC: A Stage for Legends and Fans

New York Comic Con served as the primary launchpad for “The Legend Has It…”. A major highlight was the “Comics and Hip-Hop: A Marvel x Mass Appeal Conversation” panel, which featured Nas alongside other surprise guests. This event delved into the creative intersections between superhero lore and hip-hop storytelling, exploring how the two art forms often share themes of larger-than-life heroes, epic battles, and enduring legacies.

Fans attending NYCC also had the opportunity to purchase exclusive, limited-edition variants of the first issue. Mass Appeal hosted a special takeover of Whatnot’s live shopping stage, “Whatnot House,” offering attendees a chance to acquire unique collectibles, signed merchandise, and witness live auctions and interviews. This immersive experience aimed to provide fans with direct engagement with the creators and the cultural significance of the project.

Marvel’s Enduring Connection to Hip-Hop

This collaboration is not Marvel’s first foray into celebrating hip-hop culture. Since 2015, the publisher has released numerous variant covers that pay homage to iconic hip-hop album art, transforming beloved characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America into visual tributes for albums by artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, 50 Cent, and MF Doom. Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso has previously noted the shared narrative between comics and hip-hop, stating, “Comics and hip-hop share a common narrative: They’re all about underdogs struggling, striving and persevering against overwhelming odds”. “The Legend Has It…” series builds upon this established connection, further solidifying the mutual admiration and influence between these two powerful cultural forces.

A New Chapter in Cultural Storytelling

“The Legend Has It…” comic series represents more than just a tribute; it’s a testament to the enduring impact of hip-hop on broader culture and its parallel journey with superhero narratives. By reimagining these top artists as superheroes, Marvel and Mass Appeal have crafted a new medium for storytelling that celebrates musical icons and appeals to fans of both genres, ensuring that the stories and legacies of these artists continue to inspire new generations. The launch at NYCC marks a significant moment, signaling a deepening relationship between the worlds of music and comics.
