Dälek and This Heat Drummer Charles Hayward Forge Avant-Garde Hip-Hop Fusion on New Album “HAYWARDxDÄLEK”

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellOctober 14, 20255 Minutes read

The worlds of experimental hip-hop and pioneering avant-garde rock are set to collide with the announcement of a groundbreaking collaborative album, “HAYWARDxDÄLEK,” from MC Dälek and Charles Hayward, the legendary drummer of This Heat. The highly anticipated project, due for release on December 5, 2025, is previewed by the newly shared single “Breathe Slow,” offering a potent first taste of this intergenerational, cross-continental artistic union, a true testament to the power of Dälek Charles Hayward. This music collaboration brings together two titans of their respective genres, promising a unique listening experience from Dälek Charles Hayward.

A Sonic Collision of Legends: Dälek Charles Hayward

MC Dälek, a singular force in experimental hip-hop since the late 1990s, has consistently defied categorization. Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, his work as Dälek is renowned for its potent blend of hardcore hip-hop, industrial hip-hop, and atmospheric soundscapes. Influenced by artists as diverse as Public Enemy, My Bloody Valentine, and Faust, Dälek’s music has always been characterized by its dark, abrasive, yet intellectually stimulating nature, pushing the boundaries of what hip-hop can be. He has frequently shared stages with artists from across the rock and metal spectrum, earning respect for his uncompromising sonic vision. The collaboration with Charles Hayward, as Dälek Charles Hayward, marks a significant evolution in his already groundbreaking career. The Dälek Charles Hayward project is poised to make waves.

On the other side of this collaboration stands Charles Hayward, a seminal figure in the UK’s experimental music scene. As a founding member of the influential band This Heat, active in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Hayward was instrumental in crafting a sound that fused art-rock, post-punk, and avant-prog with innovative use of tape loops and production techniques. This Heat’s legacy is profound, shaping genres and inspiring countless musicians with their confrontational and experimental approach. Since This Heat’s dissolution, Hayward has continued a prolific career, exploring diverse musical avenues, and now finds a powerful new outlet in his music collaboration with Dälek. This partnership, Dälek Charles Hayward, is set to redefine expectations and showcase the enduring talent of Charles Hayward.

The Genesis of HAYWARDxDÄLEK: A Dälek Charles Hayward Vision

The fertile ground for this remarkable collaboration was laid through the Samarbeta residency program, a UK-based initiative designed to foster new music and art by bringing musicians together for collaborative creation. Spearheaded by “From The Other,” Samarbeta provides artists with essential time and space away from typical industry constraints to experiment and develop new work. This residency model has previously hosted esteemed artists like Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore, and it was within this supportive environment that Dälek and Hayward found their common creative wavelength, paving the way for Dälek Charles Hayward. The Dälek Charles Hayward partnership was born from this fertile ground.

The core of the “HAYWARDxDÄLEK” album was conceived and recorded live in Salford, UK, in September 2023, during the 20th Samarbeta residency. Hayward, utilizing drums and synthesizers, engaged in daring improvisation, while MC Dälek employed an SP-404 sampler and an iPad loaded with sampling software. The creative process was intense, with the foundational tracks written over two days at Islington Mill and subsequently recorded at the New Adelphi Studios at the University of Salford. The entire week was a whirlwind of inspiration, culminating in the debut of their new material at Fat Out Fest. Following this intensive period, Brooks transported the live recordings back to his Deadverse Studio headquarters in Union City, New Jersey, where he meticulously mixed the tracks and layered his distinctive vocals and lyrics for select pieces, including “Between the Word and the Drum,” “Asymmetric,” and “As Children Chant,” further solidifying the Dälek Charles Hayward sound. This new album is a direct result of their creative synergy.

“Breathe Slow”: A First Glimpse of Dälek Charles Hayward

The lead single, “Breathe Slow,” serves as an immediate declaration of intent for “HAYWARDxDÄLEK.” Described as a journey into a new sonic world, the track traverses the complex terrain between hip-hop’s rhythmic pulse, the abrasive textures of noise-rock, the immersive qualities of ambient soundscapes, and the unpredictable nature of free improvisation. It showcases the dynamic interplay between Hayward’s percussive inventiveness and Dälek’s commanding lyrical presence, offering a potent example of their shared ability to construct challenging yet compelling music, a hallmark of the Dälek Charles Hayward project. This single offers a compelling preview of the Dälek Charles Hayward sound.

Bridging Generations and Continents with Dälek Charles Hayward

“HAYWARDxDÄLEK” represents more than just a musical project; it’s a testament to the enduring power of artistic connection that transcends age and geography. Both artists have been admirers of each other’s work for years, actively seeking an opportunity to collaborate for over a decade and a half. This mutual respect and long-held desire have culminated in an album that bridges the sonic landscapes of South East London and New Jersey. The resulting work is a striking exploration of rhythm, abstraction, and sonic architecture, proving that true innovation knows no temporal or geographical boundaries. The album also features tracks like “Increments,” which opens the record with an ominous drone and jagged rhythm, hinting at the diverse sonic palette that listeners can expect from Dälek Charles Hayward. The Dälek Charles Hayward collaboration is a landmark event.

As the December 5, 2025 release date for “HAYWARDxDÄLEK” approaches, the music world eagerly awaits the full unveiling of this extraordinary fusion. The single “Breathe Slow” has set a high bar, promising a new album that will undoubtedly challenge listeners and solidify the unique, boundary-pushing legacies of both MC Dälek and Charles Hayward within the experimental music continuum, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities within hip-hop and beyond, all thanks to the powerful synergy of Dälek Charles Hayward. The Dälek Charles Hayward album is a must-listen for fans of experimental hip hop and avant-garde rock.
