Leaked Jail Calls: Young Thug Claims He Funded Gunna’s Chart-Topping Album with $50K for Streams

Donovan CarterDonovan CarterAugust 25, 20254 Minutes read

In a dramatic development that has sent shockwaves through the hip-hop world, leaked audio recordings allegedly capturing conversations from Young Thug’s jail time reveal the rapper claiming he paid $50,000 for fake streams to propel Gunna’s 2022 album, DS4EVER, to the number one spot on the Billboard 200. The assertions suggest this financial maneuver was instrumental in DS4EVER‘s victory over The Weeknd’s Dawn FM, a claim that has ignited intense debate about artistic authenticity and chart integrity within the music industry.

The Accusation: Funding a Number One Debut

The alleged recordings, which have circulated widely across social media platforms, feature a voice identified as Young Thug discussing his past financial dealings and relationships within his YSL label. In one particular snippet, he directly addresses Gunna’s chart success, stating, “Like, the number one album you just had right now, I paid for you to have the number one album. You didn’t honestly earn a No. 1 album over The Weeknd, my boy. I paid for that shit.” He further detailed the alleged expenditure, adding, “I spent 50 extra grand buying motherfucking streams for you.” The claims suggest this significant investment was made without Gunna’s knowledge, highlighting a potential disconnect and underlying tension.

These revelations emerge amidst the ongoing RICO trial involving Young Thug and several other YSL affiliates. The legal entanglements have already brought intense scrutiny to the inner workings of the label and the relationships between its prominent members.

Gunna’s DS4EVER: Chart Success and Industry Norms

When DS4EVER was released in January 2022, it indeed debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, narrowly surpassing The Weeknd’s Dawn FM by a slim margin. The album achieved approximately 150,300 album-equivalent units in its first week, with a significant portion derived from streaming activity. This success marked Gunna’s second number-one album on the chart, following Wunna in 2020 and preceding DS4Ever itself. At the time, the close chart battle sparked widespread discussion, with initial projections favoring The Weeknd.

The hip-hop music landscape, particularly concerning chart performance, has long been scrutinized for the prevalence of practices aimed at artificially inflating streaming numbers. The use of bots or paid services to boost an album or song’s popularity is a persistent concern, raising questions about the genuine measure of an artist’s success and the fairness of chart rankings. While platforms like Spotify have implemented measures to detect and remove fraudulent streams, the challenge of maintaining absolute transparency in digital music metrics remains a significant issue.

A Fractured Brotherhood: Loyalty and Financial Disagreements

Beyond the implications for chart integrity, the leaked audio also appears to shed light on a deteriorating relationship between Young Thug and Gunna. The recordings reportedly capture Young Thug expressing dissatisfaction with Gunna’s pursuit of a $20 million record deal with another label, allegedly without full transparency with Young Thug, who had served as his mentor and label head at YSL Records. Furthermore, Young Thug reportedly criticizes Gunna for allegedly charging younger artists, some as young as 16, up to $2,500 for opportunities, deeming it exploitative given Gunna’s considerable earnings.

These allegations surface in the aftermath of Gunna’s plea deal in the YSL RICO case. Despite Gunna’s assertions that he did not cooperate with authorities, his Alford plea has drawn criticism from various figures in the hip-hop community, including former collaborators like Lil Baby. Young Thug himself had previously alluded to a strained relationship, posting a cryptic message on social media suggesting a distance had formed between them. The current claims further underscore this apparent rift, complicating the narrative of brotherhood often celebrated within rap culture.

Broader Industry Impact and Fan Reactions

Young Thug’s alleged admission of funding streams for DS4EVER has naturally led to widespread discussion about the ethical standards within the music industry and the reliability of chart data. While some fans have defended Gunna, arguing that his music’s inherent quality did not require artificial inflation, others have pointed out that such tactics are not uncommon in the competitive music business. The controversy highlights a critical concern regarding transparency and the metrics used to define artistic achievements in the current streaming-dominated era.

As of now, Billboard’s data provider, Luminate, has not released an official statement addressing Young Thug’s purported comments. However, the situation is expected to intensify the ongoing conversation about how streaming numbers are verified and the potential for their manipulation. The leaked conversations offer a stark look into the complex dynamics that can shape an artist’s perceived success and the potential consequences of perceived disloyalty within collaborative music environments. These alleged recordings serve as a powerful reminder of the pressures and sometimes murky practices that can exist beneath the surface of the music industry’s glittering facade, potentially reshaping how fans view the achievements of artists involved.

The fallout from these leaked calls may extend beyond the personal relationship between the two artists, influencing public perception of album accomplishments and the fundamental mechanisms of music industry rankings. The legal proceedings concerning Young Thug and YSL remain a focal point, and these newly surfaced audio leaks add another significant chapter to the unfolding narrative within the hip-hop world, touching upon themes of ambition, loyalty, and the true cost of reaching the top.
