Gunna Claims Top Spot as Hip Hop’s Best-Selling Albums This Week (August 23, 2025)

Brianna JohnsonBrianna JohnsonAugust 23, 20253 Minutes read

The landscape of popular music continues to be dominated by the vibrant energy of hip hop, and the latest charts for the week ending August 23, 2025, showcase the enduring appeal of its leading artists. Gunna’s latest offering, “The Last Wun,” has captured the number one position in weekly sales, demonstrating the artist’s consistent ability to connect with a dedicated fanbase. This week’s top five also features significant contributions from established powerhouses Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, Chance the Rapper, Tyler, the Creator, and Kendrick Lamar, highlighting the genre’s sustained market strength and the compelling narratives surrounding these artists’ recent projects.

Gunna Reclaims Chart Dominance with “The Last Wun”

Securing the top spot this week, Gunna’s “The Last Wun” moved an impressive 48,000 units. This latest tally adds to the album’s overall success, following its initial debut earlier in August which saw it land at number three on the Billboard 200 with approximately 80,000 equivalent album units. For Gunna, “The Last Wun” marks his seventh career top-ten album, serving as a powerful statement as his final project under the YSL banner. The album’s commercial performance underscores his status as a formidable force in contemporary hip hop, with fans continuing to embrace his distinctive flow and melodic Trap style.

Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR’s “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” Maintains Strong Momentum

Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s collaborative album, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U,” continues to show resilience on the charts, holding the second position this week with 23,000 units sold. While this figure represents weekly activity, it follows a monumental first-week performance earlier in the year. Upon its release in February 2025, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, earning over 246,000 equivalent units and marking a significant milestone for both artists. This collaboration not only highlighted Drake’s status as one of the most consistent chart-toppers in hip hop history, tying him with other legends for numerous number-one albums, but also demonstrated the potent synergy between the two Canadian superstars, which captivated audiences and fueled considerable streaming numbers.

Chance the Rapper’s “Star Line” Reflects Dedicated Fanbase

Landing in the third spot for the week, Chance the Rapper’s “Star Line” garnered 22,000 units. This independent release, which officially dropped on August 15, debuted at number 22 on the Billboard 200, moving approximately 22,310 units overall. Despite not reaching the commercial heights of his earlier mixtapes or projects like “The Big Day,” “Star Line” signifies a meaningful comeback for the Chicago artist. The album’s performance, achieved without major label backing, speaks volumes about the loyalty of his fanbase and his continued ability to craft music that resonates deeply, blending hip hop with his signature soulful and gospel-influenced sounds. The project also supported his “And We Back Tour,” further solidifying his connection with listeners.

Tyler, the Creator and Kendrick Lamar Round Out the Top 5

Tyler, the Creator’s latest project, “Don’t Tap the Glass,” secured the fourth position this week, moving 20,000 units. Released in late July 2025, the album made a powerful debut at number one on the Billboard 200 with over 197,000 equivalent units, marking Tyler’s fourth consecutive chart-topping album. Known for his innovative artistry and trend-setting approach to music and visuals, “Don’t Tap the Glass” showcased his ability to blend genres and create a distinct sonic world, further cementing his status as a generational talent in hip hop.

Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed “GNX” rounded out the top five, also selling 20,000 units this week. While this week’s figure reflects ongoing sales, “GNX” initially made a massive splash upon its surprise release in late 2024. It debuted with over 319,000 equivalent units and went on to become the first rap album of 2025 to surpass one million units sold. The album’s success was further amplified by Lamar’s high-profile rap beefs and a captivating Super Bowl performance, solidifying his position as a dominant figure in the contemporary hip hop scene.

Hip Hop’s Continued Reign in the Music Industry

These weekly sales stories underscore the persistent dominance of hip hop within the broader music industry. Artists are increasingly employing diverse release strategies, from surprise drops to extensive physical merchandise bundles, to capture audience attention and maximize chart impact. The continued strong performance of albums released months earlier, such as “GNX” and “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U,” highlights the long tail of success in the streaming era and the deep engagement artists cultivate with their fanbases. The stories emerging from these charts each week not only reflect individual artist achievements but also the evolving dynamics of music consumption and promotion in the current hip hop landscape. The genre’s ability to consistently produce chart-topping hits and compelling narratives ensures its place at the forefront of popular culture.
