Cardi B Stands Firm in Civil Trial: “I Didn’t Touch Her” Amidst Assault Allegations

Andre WashingtonAndre WashingtonAugust 27, 20254 Minutes read

Alhambra, CA – Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B took the stand this week, offering her account of a 2018 incident outside a Beverly Hills medical office that has led to a civil assault lawsuit. The hip-hop superstar vehemently denied physically assaulting a former security guard, Emani Ellis, maintaining that the encounter was strictly a verbal altercation, though admitting to calling Ellis a “bitch.”

The trial, which has captivated audiences with its dramatic courtroom exchanges and viral social media moments, centers on allegations that Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, physically attacked Ellis. Ellis claims the rapper spat on her, used profanity and slurs, and most notably, scratched her face with a long fingernail during the 2018 confrontation. Ellis is seeking $24 million in damages for alleged emotional and physical suffering, and lost wages.

The Allegations: A Security Guard’s Claims

Emani Ellis, the former security guard for the building where Cardi B had a doctor’s appointment on February 24, 2018, testified that the interaction escalated when she greeted the rapper. According to Ellis, she exclaimed, “Wow, it’s Cardi B,” upon seeing the artist exit an elevator. Ellis claims this led to Cardi B becoming hostile, confronting her and accusing her of telling people about her presence. Ellis further alleged that Cardi B put her finger in her face, spat on her, and uttered a barrage of insults, including racial and body-shaming slurs. Ellis stated that the alleged assault, particularly the scratch to her cheek from Cardi B’s fingernail, left her “deeply traumatized,” requiring cosmetic surgery and causing anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.

Ellis initially also alleged that Cardi B used her celebrity status to get her fired from her job. However, during the proceedings, Ellis’s legal team indicated they would drop this specific claim, with Ellis testifying she was terminated for a HIPAA violation.

Cardi B’s Defense: A Verbal Altercation, Not Physical Assault

On the witness stand, Cardi B presented a starkly different narrative. She acknowledged that the situation became heated, admitting they went “chest-to-chest” and that she exchanged harsh words, including calling Ellis a “bitch.” However, she insisted there was absolutely no physical contact. “I didn’t touch her. She didn’t touch me. There was no touch. So, to me, there was no incident,” Cardi B stated emphatically.

Cardi B explained that her discomfort stemmed from her belief that Ellis was attempting to film her with a cellphone, thereby invading her privacy, especially concerning her pregnancy, which was not publicly known at the time. “She was following me and recording me,” Cardi B testified, expressing concern that Ellis might leak information about her pregnancy. She described the entire confrontation as lasting approximately 40 to 50 seconds, with the core verbal dispute taking about 20 seconds.

Pregnancy, Privacy, and Perceived Threats

Cardi B, who was approximately four months pregnant during the incident, emphasized that her condition made her feel vulnerable. She described herself as feeling “disabled” due to her pregnancy and stated that she would not have attempted to fight Ellis, whom she described as significantly larger than her – using colorful terms like “security-heavy” and “more developed.”

Her defense team highlighted that Cardi B was visiting the doctor in a private capacity, with the office even closed to other patients for her privacy. They also pointed to inconsistencies in Ellis’s account and suggested a motive of financial gain, given the substantial damages sought.

Supporting Testimony and Lack of Evidence

Adding weight to Cardi B’s defense, the obstetrician, Dr. David Finke, and his receptionist, Tierra Malcolm, testified. Malcolm stated she intervened between the two women and saw Ellis corner Cardi B and reach for the rapper, resulting in a cut on Malcolm’s own forehead. Both Malcolm and Dr. Finke testified that they did not witness Cardi B physically assault Ellis or cause any injuries to her face. Dr. Finke remarked that he was “flabbergasted with the allegations that don’t seem congruent with what I saw that day.”

Notably, no video footage of the altercation has surfaced, despite Cardi B’s legal team investigating available security cameras. Cardi B also testified that her acrylic nails at the time were “coffin-shaped” with flat rhinestones, not sharp enough to cause the alleged scratches, and that none of her nails broke during the incident.

Courtroom Spectacle: Viral Moments and Public Reaction

Cardi B’s testimony generated considerable buzz online, with many of her unfiltered responses and animated expressions going viral. Her candid remarks about the incident, her wigs, and her descriptions of Ellis as “security-heavy” led to comparisons to comedic performances. Some fans rallied behind the rapper, calling the lawsuit a “money grab” and suggesting potential countersuits for HIPAA violations.

Despite the public’s fascination, the trial involves serious allegations. Ellis’s claims detail significant emotional and physical distress, while Cardi B maintains her innocence regarding physical assault, portraying the incident as a defense of her privacy.

The Legal Battle: Seeking Millions in Damages

Emani Ellis filed the lawsuit in 2020, several years after the 2018 incident. The core of the case revolves around whether Cardi B committed assault and battery, or if it was merely a heated verbal exchange as the rapper contends. Ellis’s suit seeks damages covering medical expenses, compensation for emotional distress, and lost earnings. The trial has seen extensive testimony from both the plaintiff and the defendant, with closing arguments anticipated, bringing this chapter of Cardi B’s legal history towards a conclusion. The outcome will determine the validity of the claims and the compensation, if any, awarded to Ellis.

The intersection of the music industry, celebrity privacy, and legal proceedings continues to be a top story, with this high-profile case highlighting the complexities of public figures navigating personal disputes.

Closing arguments were expected to commence shortly after Cardi B concluded her testimony, marking the culmination of days of legal back-and-forth in this significant trial.
