Grammy Winner Lil Nas X Faces Four Felony Charges After Alleged Naked Street Confrontation and Assault on LAPD Officers

Brianna JohnsonBrianna JohnsonAugust 21, 20253 Minutes read

Rapper and singer Lil Nas X, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, is facing four felony charges following a bizarre incident in Studio City, Los Angeles, early on Thursday, August 21, 2025. The Grammy-winning artist was arrested after police responded to reports of a naked man on Ventura Boulevard, an incident that escalated into allegations of assaulting law enforcement officers. He subsequently faced hospitalization for a suspected overdose before being booked into jail.

The Incident: A Naked Stroll and Alleged Confrontation

Authorities were dispatched to the 11000 block of Ventura Boulevard shortly before 6 a.m. on August 21, 2025, responding to calls concerning a naked individual. Upon arrival, officers encountered the 26-year-old musician. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), when confronted, Lil Nas X allegedly charged at the officers. The encounter resulted in the arrest of the artist, with police also taking him to a local hospital due to concerns of a possible overdose. After several hours of observation and treatment, he was transported to jail. The LAPD stated that at least three officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Video footage that emerged shortly after the arrest, reportedly obtained by TMZ, showed Lil Nas X engaging with onlookers. In some clips, he was seen wearing only white underwear and cowboy boots, singing, and interacting with a person filming him. During these interactions, he made remarks such as, “Don’t be late to the party tonight,” and “Didn’t I tell you to put the phone down? Uh oh, somebody’s gonna have to pay for that.” In other footage, he was seen attempting to get a driver to move along and stop recording him.

Legal Ramifications: Felony Charges and Court Proceedings

Lil Nas X was initially booked on suspicion of misdemeanor obstructing an officer. However, on Monday, August 25, 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that he had been formally charged with four felonies. These charges include three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one felony count of resisting an executive officer. The felony charges carry significantly more severe potential penalties than the initial misdemeanor accusation, with convictions potentially leading to over ten years in state prison.

During his arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court on August 25, 2025, Lil Nas X, accompanied by his attorney Christy O’Connor, pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bail was set at $75,000, with a condition that he attend drug treatment. He was released on bail that same afternoon. His legal team has emphasized that this incident is an anomaly in his life, with O’Connor telling a judge that his life has been “remarkable” and “nothing like this has ever happened to him.”

Background and Career Context

Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill in Atlanta, Georgia, rose to global stardom in 2018 with his genre-bending country rap hit, “Old Town Road.” The song, which masterfully blended hip hop and country elements, became a cultural phenomenon, spending a then-record 19 weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This massive success not only cemented his place in contemporary music but also earned him critical acclaim, including two Grammy Awards. His debut studio album, “Montero” (2021), further showcased his innovative sound and visual artistry, receiving a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

The artist has also been open about his personal life and health, having revealed in April 2025 that he had been hospitalized due to sudden partial paralysis of his face. This incident adds another layer to the narrative surrounding the artist, who is known for pushing boundaries in both his music and his public persona. His career trajectory has been marked by significant achievements in the music industry, making this legal trouble a stark contrast.

Artist’s Response and What Lies Ahead

Following his release, Lil Nas X briefly addressed the incident via his Instagram Stories. He described the experience as “terrifying” but reassured his fans that he was “going to be OK.” The artist is scheduled to return to court for his next pre-trial hearing on September 15, 2025, where the legal proceedings against him will continue to unfold. The situation highlights the intense scrutiny faced by high-profile figures in the entertainment world and the serious consequences that can arise from public altercations with law enforcement.
