2025’s Hip-Hop Dominance: Playboi Carti Leads Massive First-Week Sales Race

C-DubC-DubAugust 20, 20253 Minutes read

The landscape of hip-hop music in 2025 has been a dynamic battleground for commercial success, with several titans of the genre dropping highly anticipated projects. First-week album sales remain a crucial indicator of an artist’s cultural currency and fan engagement. This year has seen staggering numbers, with established names and proven hitmakers consistently drawing massive audiences, translating directly into impressive debut weeks. From the experimental sounds of Playboi Carti to the collaborative prowess of Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, the top tier of hip-hop has delivered a series of chart-topping stories.

Playboi Carti’s ‘MUSIC’ Takes the Crown

Leading the charge for the biggest first-week sales of 2025 is Playboi Carti with his much-lauded album, “MUSIC.” The enigmatic artist’s latest offering debuted with an astounding 298,000 equivalent album units. This monumental figure not only marks the highest first-week performance for a hip-hop album in 2025 but also solidifies Carti’s position as one of the genre’s most influential and commercially powerful voices. The album’s success was driven by a combination of a dedicated fanbase, strategic marketing, and a significant streaming impact, making it the highest-streaming debut of the year.

Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s Collaborative Hit

Securing the second spot is the highly anticipated joint project from global superstar Drake and R&B crooner PARTYNEXTDOOR, titled “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.” This collaboration between two of music’s most magnetic figures bowed with an impressive 246,000 equivalent album units. The album’s debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart was a significant moment, marking Drake’s 14th chart-topping album and tying him with JAY-Z and Taylor Swift for the most number-one albums by a solo artist. The project was also lauded for its significant streaming week, showcasing the enduring power of Drake’s reach and the seamless blend of R&B and hip-hop elements in their music.

Travis Scott and Cactus Jack’s ‘JACKBOYS 2’ Strikes Gold

Travis Scott, alongside his Cactus Jack collective, landed in third place with their compilation album “JACKBOYS 2.” This release garnered 232,000 equivalent album units in its opening week. The album’s strong debut not only secured a number one position on the Billboard 200 but also represented the second-largest opening week for a rap album in 2025, trailing only Playboi Carti’s “MUSIC.” “JACKBOYS 2” also achieved the distinction of having the biggest sales week for a hip-hop release since Travis Scott’s own “Days Before Rodeo” reissue in 2024, underscoring the label’s continued influence and Scott’s consistent ability to deliver commercially successful projects.

Tyler, The Creator’s Artistic & Commercial Triumph

Demonstrating his unique blend of artistic innovation and mainstream appeal, Tyler, The Creator claimed the fourth spot with his album “DON’T TAP THE GLASS.” The project achieved 197,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Notably, this impressive figure was accomplished within a shortened four-day tracking period, as the album was released on a Monday, a strategic move mirroring a growing trend in the hip-hop industry. This release marked Tyler, The Creator’s fourth consecutive album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, a testament to his devoted fanbase and his consistent ability to command attention in the music market.

Lil Baby Completes the Top 5 with ‘WHAM’

Kicking off the top five, Lil Baby’s album “WHAM” made a strong debut early in the year, moving 140,000 equivalent album units in its first week. This significant opening continued Lil Baby’s streak of chart success, marking his fourth consecutive project to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album’s strong performance set a positive tone for the hip-hop year, showcasing the rapper’s sustained popularity and the fervent support of his fanbase.

The 2025 Hip-Hop Sales Landscape

The collective performance of these artists highlights a robust year for hip-hop album sales. The figures demonstrate a strong demand for both physical sales, often boosted by exclusive merchandise and bundles, and the ever-dominant streaming equivalents. Artists are strategically leveraging their platforms and fan loyalty, whether through surprise drops, long-awaited releases, or collaborative efforts, to maximize their first-week impact. The continued success of these top-tier artists signals a healthy and competitive market, where impactful storytelling and innovative music continue to drive significant commercial results within the hip-hop genre.

Top 5 Hip-Hop First-Week Album Sales of 2025:

1. Playboi Carti – MUSIC: 298,000 units
2. Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR – $ome $exy $ongs 4 U: 246,000 units

4. Tyler, The Creator – DON’T TAP THE GLASS: 197,000 units
5. Lil Baby – WHAM: 140,000 units
