New Music Friday August 29, 2025: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Ella Mai, and Hip-Hop’s Top Stories Emerge

New Music Friday August 29, 2025: A Powerhouse Week for Albums and Singles

This past Friday, August 29, 2025, the music industry witnessed an avalanche of new releases, marking one of the most significant Fridays of the year. From chart-topping pop sensations to pioneering hip-hop legends, artists across various genres dropped highly anticipated projects and compelling singles, offering a diverse sonic landscape for listeners. The week’s releases underscore the vibrant and ever-evolving nature of contemporary music, with major players and emerging talents alike making their mark.

Major Album Releases Dominate the Landscape

The headliners for this New Music Friday included a trio of highly anticipated albums. Brooklyn’s own Joey Bada$$ finally delivered his fourth studio album, Lonely At The Top, on August 29, 2025, via Columbia Records/Pro Era/Cinematic Music Group. This project, his first full-length release in three years, follows his critically acclaimed 2022 album 2000 and comes after a period of intense lyrical practice, including notable rap battles. The album boasts collaborations with artists like Westside Gunn, A$AP Ferg, and Ty Dolla $ign, with production helmed by industry heavyweights such as Statik Selektah and Boi-1da. Lonely At The Top is positioned as a celebration of his lyrical prowess and artistic evolution.

Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter continued her meteoric rise with the release of her seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend. Available through Island Records, the album features production from Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, who also worked on her previous successful projects. Described as a primarily pop album with disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock elements, Man’s Best Friend showcases Carpenter’s signature witty lyricism and evolving sound, drawing inspiration from ’70s disco and artists like ABBA and Dolly Parton. The album’s lead single, “Manchild,” has already achieved chart success, reaching number one in several territories. The album also features the single “Tears,” released concurrently.

Westside Gunn, a pivotal figure in the Griselda Records collective, unleashed his latest EP, HEELS HAVE EYES 2, on August 29, 2025. This release builds upon his consistent output, offering a collection of tracks that exemplify his distinctive artistic vision, blending raw lyricism with art-forward production. The EP features collaborations with artists such as Benny The Butcher, Skyzoo, and Stove God Cooks, showcasing the Griselda sound while also highlighting Gunn’s own lyrical performance. HEELS HAVE EYES 2 is noted for its thematic depth and continued exploration of Gunn’s multifaceted brand, which extends beyond music into fashion and professional wrestling.

Pioneering hip-hop icon Rakim also made a significant return, releasing his collaborative album The Re-Up with producer Big Ghost LTD on the same day. This project sees the legendary MC teaming up with Big Ghost LTD for a fresh take on his comeback, featuring new beats and production that enhances the original material. The album includes singles like “Not To Be Defined” (featuring Lazarus) and “I’m Good,” with production entirely handled by Big Ghost LTD. The Re-Up solidifies Rakim’s enduring influence on hip-hop, arriving after he received a Peabody Medal for his contributions to music.

Singles That Spark Conversation

Beyond full-length projects, several impactful singles also dropped, commanding attention. DJ Khaled ignited anticipation for his upcoming 14th studio album, Aalam of God, by releasing two new singles simultaneously: “Brother” and “You Remind Me”. “Brother” features a high-profile collaboration with Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy, blending melodic and intense verses over a melancholic, genre-bending instrumental that touches on themes of loyalty and resilience. “You Remind Me,” on the other hand, is a dancehall-heavy anthem that brings together an all-star cast of Jamaican legends, including Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, and Bounty Killer, sampling Gyptian’s hit “Hold Yuh”.

Ella Mai, the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer, returned with her first single since her 2024 EP 3. The Mustard-produced track, “Tell Her,” arrived on August 29, offering a confident and soulful exploration of modern relationships. The song, which interpolates Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name,” finds Mai asserting her position with clarity and conviction over a smooth, bouncy beat. This release signals an exciting new chapter for the artist, with fans eagerly anticipating a full-length album.

Emerging artist Nicole Áries made a notable debut with her single “ICONIC”. This pop gem, released around August 20-29, is described as a joyful, cheeky, and empowering anthem channeling the confidence of artists like Sabrina Carpenter. The track blends slick vocals, flirtatious energy, and undeniable charisma, marking Áries as a promising new voice in the pop landscape and a name to watch.

Additionally, The Alchemist and Erykah Badu joined forces for the hypnotic hip-hop track “Abi & Alan,” blending jazz and hip-hop elements into a fresh sound. Hayley Williams also released “Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party,” a sharp-tongued and wryly titled track that contributes to a larger album release.

Billboard Highlights Hip-Hop’s Legacy

Adding significant context to the week’s music releases, Billboard unveiled its highly anticipated list of the Top 10 Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century on August 28, 2025. The ranking, based on chart performance, celebrates the enduring impact and diversity of hip-hop over the past two decades. Topping the list is Lil Nas X’s “Industry Baby,” followed by Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” at number two. Post Malone and 21 Savage’s “Rockstar” secured the third spot, with Travis Scott and Drake’s “SICKO MODE” at number four, and Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” rounding out the top five. This list serves as a powerful reminder of hip-hop’s cultural dominance and its ability to continually reinvent itself, featuring stories that have resonated globally.

A Rich Weekend for Music Fans

The final Friday of August 2025 delivered a rich tapestry of new music, catering to a wide array of tastes. From the introspective lyricism of Joey Bada$$ and the pop sensibilities of Sabrina Carpenter to the classic hip-hop artistry of Rakim and the R&B smooth of Ella Mai, listeners had no shortage of quality content. The concurrent release of significant albums and singles, alongside industry-defining lists like Billboard’s top hip-hop songs, cemented August 29, 2025, as a landmark day for music, showcasing the ongoing dynamism and creative output across the industry.
