Gunna’s ‘The Last Wun’ Reigns Supreme on Sales Charts, Leading a Top Tier of Hip-Hop Heavyweights for the Week of August 23, 2025

NEW YORK, NY – August 23, 2025 – The hip-hop music landscape is buzzing this week as Gunna’s latest album, “The Last Wun,” secures the number one position on the sales charts. The release marks a significant moment for the artist, underscoring the enduring commercial power of established figures in the genre. This week’s performance also highlights the sustained success of other major artists, including Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, and Tyler, The Creator, who collectively round out the top-selling rap albums.

Gunna’s Chart-Topping Triumph

Gunna’s “The Last Wun” has claimed the top spot, moving an impressive 48,000 units. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it represents his sixth consecutive number one on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album also made a strong debut on the broader Billboard 200, landing at number three, and spearheaded the Top Rap Albums chart. The significant commercial success of “The Last Wun” is largely attributed to its substantial streaming numbers, which accounted for nearly all of its first-week units, totaling approximately 80,000 equivalent album units. This release is also recognized as Gunna’s final album under the YSL Records imprint, adding a layer of narrative to its commercial dominance.

The Continued Reign of Hip-Hop Titans

The week’s charts demonstrate the robust health and diverse appeal within the hip-hop music industry. Following Gunna, the collaboration between Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U,” secured the second position, selling 23,000 units. This project has been a consistent performer since its release earlier in the year, reflecting the lasting impact of both artists.

Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX,” a critically acclaimed album that initially debuted in late 2024, continues its impressive chart presence, selling 20,000 units this week. The album has been a commercial juggernaut throughout 2025, previously becoming the first hip-hop album to sell over a million units in the year. Its sustained popularity underscores Lamar’s significant influence and the long-term appeal of his work.

Chance The Rapper’s comeback album, “STAR LINE,” also made a strong showing, debuting with 22,000 units sold. As an independent artist, his ability to generate these numbers without traditional label backing speaks volumes about his dedicated fanbase and the quality of his music.

Rounding out the top five is Tyler, The Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS,” which also moved 20,000 units. Tyler’s consistent commercial success highlights his status as a pivotal artist in contemporary hip hop, blending artistic integrity with significant market appeal.

Industry Trends and Dynamics

The sales figures for the week ending August 23, 2025, paint a picture of a vibrant and resilient hip-hop music market. The dominance of major artists like Gunna, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar illustrates their continued ability to capture audiences and drive significant revenue, whether through new releases or enduring catalog strength. The performance of “The Last Wun,” in particular, highlights the power of streaming in contemporary album sales, where a large portion of equivalent album units are driven by audio and video streams.

The chart also showcases the diverse pathways to success within the genre. While Gunna’s release is a major new entry, Kendrick Lamar’s sustained performance with “GNX” demonstrates the lasting impact of a well-received project. Chance The Rapper’s independent success further emphasizes that strong artistry and fan connection can overcome traditional industry structures.

Looking Ahead

As the year progresses, the performance of these top albums provides valuable insights into the current state and future trajectory of hip-hop music sales. The consistent presence of these established artists suggests a market that values both new innovation and proven talent. The stories emerging from these charts continue to shape the narrative of hip-hop’s commercial power and artistic evolution.

The success of Gunna’s “The Last Wun” is a testament to his artistic growth and market appeal. Coupled with the ongoing strength of artists like Drake and Kendrick Lamar, this week’s sales data solidifies the dominance of major players while also making room for significant contributions from artists like Chance The Rapper and Tyler, The Creator. These top stories from the charts offer a compelling look at the dynamic world of hip-hop music.
