Birmingham’s Hip Hop Veterans Shaheed & DJ Supreme Champion Literacy and Community Through Music

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellAugust 23, 20254 Minutes read

Birmingham, AL – In a city where culture and community intersect, the dynamic hip-hop duo Shaheed and DJ Supreme are making significant waves, transforming local libraries into vibrant centers of learning and creativity. Through their multifaceted initiative, Knowledge, Rhythm, and Understanding (K.R.U.), these Birmingham natives are blending infectious beats with a powerful message of literacy, inspiring a new generation to embrace the world of books and intellectual exploration. Their latest single, “Knowledge of Shelf,” serves as an anthem for this movement, celebrating the enduring magic of libraries and the transformative power of reading.

Shaheed and DJ Supreme, who have been a consistent presence in the hip-hop scene since 2007, have built a reputation for their thoughtful lyrics and socially conscious music. Their partnership with the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) system is a natural extension of their core mission: to uplift their community and provide positive influences, especially for young people. The duo’s commitment stems from personal connections; Shaheed’s mother was an educator and principal who fostered his love for reading, while DJ Supreme comes from a family with deep roots in librarianship, instilling in him an early appreciation for the quiet power of the library. “Libraries, they’re more than just books,” Shaheed has stated. “It’s about building community, feeding curiosity, and passing knowledge to the next generation.”

The Foundation of K.R.U.

At the heart of their community outreach is K.R.U. (Knowledge, Rhythm, and Understanding), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth through the four fundamental elements of hip-hop: emceeing, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti art. This educational framework is built upon the foundational principles of peace, love, unity, and fun, providing a constructive outlet for creative expression. K.R.U. programs have become a staple in local schools and libraries across Jefferson County, where the duo expertly merges live music with motivational messages, teaching valuable life skills that extend far beyond the realm of music. They are committed to showing young people that there are positive avenues for growth and achievement, encouraging them to look beyond negative influences.

‘Knowledge of Shelf’: A Library’s Soundtrack

Their latest musical offering, “Knowledge of Shelf,” is a testament to their dedication to literacy and community spaces. The track, released under K.R.U. Recordings/Who?Mag Distribution, features classic hip-hop grooves paired with lyrics that champion libraries as vital community hubs. The accompanying music video, filmed at the Birmingham Public Library’s Central location, visually underscores this message, with Shaheed delivering verses about the value of libraries while DJ Supreme lays down the distinctive beats. The video even includes a cameo from local NBC 13 anchor Brittany Decker, further amplifying the song’s reach. The track, mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Darrell Thorp, encapsulates the duo’s sentiment that libraries offer endless “stories” and knowledge waiting to be discovered. “I love the library. Since I was a little shorty, by books I’m entertained, it stimulates the brain,” Shaheed raps in the song, reflecting a lifelong connection.

Expanding Horizons with Environmental Anthems and Orchestral Collaborations

Shaheed and DJ Supreme’s influence extends beyond the library walls. They have also championed environmental awareness through their music, notably with their collaboration with renowned rapper Slug from Atmosphere on the track “Hope, Growth & Opportunity.” This song, promoting environmental stewardship, was performed on Earth Day at BPL’s Springville Road Library in partnership with Black Warrior Riverkeeper and Birmingham City Councilor Clinton Woods. Charles Scribner, Executive Director of Black Warrior Riverkeeper, highlighted the event as a unifying moment, emphasizing the shared message of protecting natural resources. Furthermore, the duo has made history by collaborating with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) for educational performances aimed at Birmingham youth. Dubbed “Young People’s Concert: Shaheed and D.J. Supreme & the ASO – Rhythm, Rhyme and Flow!,” this fusion of hip-hop and orchestral music aims to break down barriers and showcase the versatility of the genre, demonstrating that hip-hop artists can create timeless music with diverse ensembles.

A Symbiotic Relationship with Birmingham’s Libraries

The Birmingham Public Library itself is actively fostering a dynamic environment that goes beyond traditional book lending. With 18 locations, BPL offers a wide array of programs, from storytimes and technology workshops to author events and community gatherings. Their mission is to provide high-quality experiences for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and enjoyment. Shaheed and DJ Supreme’s work directly complements this vision, infusing the library spaces with energy, creativity, and a unique educational approach that resonates with a broad audience. Their performances and initiatives have been well-received, with the duo consistently being recognized for their positive impact on the Birmingham community.

Shaheed and DJ Supreme exemplify how hip-hop music can serve as a powerful vehicle for positive change, education, and community building. Through their innovative projects and unwavering dedication to their hometown, they are not only shaping the cultural landscape of Birmingham but also nurturing the minds and spirits of its youth, proving that the rhythm of hip-hop can indeed lead to knowledge and a brighter future.
