August 29, 2025: Hip-Hop and R&B Dominate New Music Friday with Major Releases from Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, and More

Alfonso BellajoAlfonso BellajoAugust 29, 20253 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025, the 29th, has cemented itself as a monumental day for the hip-hop and R&B music landscape, marked by the highly anticipated release of several major projects. At the forefront are Joey Bada$$‘s fourth studio album, ‘Lonely At The Top,’ and Sabrina Carpenter‘s seventh studio album, ‘Man’s Best Friend,’ both dropping to significant fanfare and critical attention.

Joey Bada$$ Elevates with ‘Lonely At The Top’

Joey Bada$$, a prominent figure in contemporary hip-hop, delivered his latest body of work, ‘Lonely At The Top,’ on August 29, 2025. This project, originally slated for an earlier August release, experienced a slight delay due to label setbacks but ultimately arrived with a powerful statement. The album, which clocks in at approximately 40 minutes and features 11 tracks, explores themes of fame, solitude, and self-awareness, showcasing Joey’s sharp lyricism and layered production. ‘Lonely At The Top’ marks Joey Bada$$’s first full-length solo album in three years, following up on his 2022 release, ‘2000.’ The project features a diverse lineup of collaborators, including Westside Gunn, Ab-Soul, A$AP Ferg, Ty Dolla $ign, Rome Streetz, Kai Ca$h, and CJ Fly. Producers such as Statik Selektah, Chuck Strangers, Hitmaka, Boi-1da, and Jay Versace contributed to the album’s soundscape, creating a dynamic listening experience that blends his core hip-hop appeal with experimental and introspective moments. Tracks like “SWANK WHITE” see Joey Bada$$ trading bars with Westside Gunn, touching on cultural references and wrestling icons, while “STILL” features Ab-Soul and Rapsody, adding significant depth. The album is poised to be a significant entry in Joey’s discography, highlighting his growth as an artist.

Sabrina Carpenter Explores New Depths with ‘Man’s Best Friend’

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter also made a significant impact on New Music Friday with the release of her seventh studio album, ‘Man’s Best Friend.’ Dropping on August 29, 2025, this album follows the massive success of her 2024 Grammy-nominated album, ‘Short n’ Sweet.’ ‘Man’s Best Friend’ is a predominantly pop album infused with elements of disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock, showcasing Carpenter’s evolving musicality. Produced in collaboration with Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, the album features 12 tracks that delve into themes of relationships, confidence, and personal expression, often with a bold and witty lyrical approach. The album’s lead single, “Manchild,” released earlier in the year, garnered significant attention and topped charts in multiple territories. The second single, “Tears,” was released concurrently with the album. ‘Man’s Best Friend’ has been met with a mix of critical acclaim and discussion, particularly surrounding its provocative cover art. Critics have noted Carpenter’s craft in songwriting and production, with some comparing her artistic development to that of Dolly Parton, highlighting her ability to blend camp, humor, and astute observation. The album’s detailed production and Carpenter’s characteristic lyrical dexterity have positioned it as a major pop release of the year.

A Packed New Music Friday Features More Heavy Hitters

The musical feast on August 29, 2025, extended beyond these two leading figures. Ella Mai made her return with the new single “Tell Her,” produced by her longtime collaborator Mustard. This track, a smooth R&B anthem, explores themes of loyalty and setting boundaries, marking Ella Mai’s first release since her 2024 EP ‘3.’

DJ Khaled also contributed to the day’s releases, unveiling two new singles, “You Remind Me” featuring a host of dancehall titans including Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, Bounty Killer, Rorystonelove, and Kaylan Arnold, and “Brother,” a collaboration with Post Malone and YoungBoy Never Broke Again. These tracks serve as a preview for his forthcoming 14th studio album, ‘Aalam of God.’

Legendary rapper Rakim released his collaborative album with producer Big Ghost LTD, titled ‘The Re-Up.’ This project features seven remixes and new tracks, including the single “Not to Be Defined” with Lazarus and his solo track “I’m Good.”

Westside Gunn also dropped his latest project, ‘HEELS HAVE EYES 2,’ coinciding with the annual “Westside Gunn Day” celebration in Buffalo, New York. The album, which features production from various notable producers, continues Gunn’s unique fusion of music, art, and wrestling culture. His “Westside Gunn Day” celebrations notably included performances by Joey Bada$$, Bun B, and Styles P, underscoring the interconnectedness of these artists within the hip-hop community.

This confluence of releases underscores August 2025 as a pivotal month for new music, offering fans a diverse and high-quality selection across the hip-hop and R&B spectrum. The day’s top stories highlight the continued innovation and impact of these artists within the music industry.
