BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards 2025: T-Pain Receives President’s Award, GloRilla Earns Impact Honor Amidst Star-Studded Celebration

Los Angeles, CA – The Fairmont Century Plaza was abuzz on August 28th as the music industry gathered for the 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, an evening dedicated to celebrating the artistry and impact of creators who continually shape the soundscape of modern music. This year’s ceremony prominently honored two of the genre’s most influential figures: GRAMMY Award-winning artist, producer, and songwriter T-Pain, who was presented with the prestigious BMI President’s Award, and the groundbreaking rap powerhouse GloRilla, who received the BMI Impact Award.

T-Pain: A Career Defined by Innovation and Influence

T-Pain, a true innovator whose career has spanned two decades, was recognized with the BMI President’s Award, the evening’s highest accolade. This award celebrates artists whose work has profoundly shifted the sound of music and resonated across generations. T-Pain’s career is a testament to his boundary-pushing creativity, from pioneering the artistic use of Auto-Tune to delivering a catalog brimming with chart-topping hits and unforgettable collaborations. Over his illustrious career, he has amassed an impressive 28 BMI Awards, earned the BMI Songwriter of the Year title three times, and was named BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year. His commercial success is undeniable, with over 50 million singles sold and ten number-one placements on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Accepting the award, T-Pain shared a message of self-determination, stating, “Every journey has a beginning, a middle and an end…. Don’t let anyone dictate your time or how fast you get to the finish line. Let yourself be your own time measurement.” His inclusion in the ranks of past President’s Award recipients, including artists like Benny Blanco, Ellie Goulding, and Taylor Swift, solidifies his status as a monumental figure in the music industry.

GloRilla: Impacting Hip-Hop with Fearless Artistry

GloRilla, a rapidly ascending force in hip-hop, was honored with the BMI Impact Award, recognizing her significant contributions, creative vision, and undeniable influence on the future of the genre, particularly for female artists. Since her explosive breakout in 2022 with the viral hit “FNF (Let’s Go),” GloRilla has cemented her status as a premier rapper. Her debut album, GLORIOUS, released in October 2024, achieved the highest opening week sales for a female rapper that year, and she became the first female rapper to have multiple projects sell over 500,000 units in a single year. GloRilla also shared the title of BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year, tying with Mike Dean and Tay Keith for co-writing three of the year’s most-performed songs. Upon accepting her award, GloRilla delivered an inspiring message to aspiring artists, urging them, “Keep your foot on the gas, don’t let nobody tell y’all what y’all can’t do, because a lot of people told me what I can’t do.” Her recognition underscores her powerful voice and fearless creativity that is currently shaping and inspiring the future of hip-hop.

Celebrating the Architects of Top Stories

The evening also paid tribute to the vital, often behind-the-scenes, talent responsible for the year’s most successful R&B and Hip-Hop tracks. BMI celebrated the songwriters, producers, and publishers behind the 35 most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs in the U.S. Kendrick Lamar’s ubiquitous smash hit “Not Like Us” was crowned BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. The track, co-written by Lamar, Ray Charles, Sean Momberger, and Sounwave, garnered critical acclaim and achieved significant chart success. Sounwave, a frequent collaborator with Lamar, was named BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year for his extensive work, including “Not Like Us” and other hits. He was joined in the Songwriter of the Year category by Mike Dean and GloRilla, who each co-wrote three of the most-performed songs. Sony Music Publishing was recognized as Publisher of the Year, acknowledging their significant role in supporting and distributing the works of BMI’s acclaimed affiliates.

Performances and the Future of Hip-Hop

The ceremony was further energized by standout performances from established and emerging artists. BigXthaPlug opened the show with his BMI Award-winning song “Mmhmm,” followed by a dynamic performance from BossMan Dlow with his award-winning track “Get In With Me.” The “Know Them Now” segment provided a crucial platform for up-and-coming talent, spotlighting emerging songwriters and artists such as Eli Derby, who performed “Cadillac Dream,” TA Thomas with “Preach,” and Lekan with “Always.” These performances offered a glimpse into the vibrant and evolving future of R&B and hip-hop music.

BMI’s Enduring Commitment to Music

For over 80 years, BMI has been a cornerstone in advocating for the value of music and supporting creators across all genres. The BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards represent a critical part of this mission, celebrating the artistry that defines popular culture. By honoring both established legends and rising stars, BMI reinforces its dedication to nurturing and championing the diverse voices that contribute to the rich tapestry of R&B and hip-hop music. The event continues to highlight the intricate ecosystem of songwriting, production, and publishing that drives the music industry forward, ensuring that the stories of these talented individuals are heard and celebrated.

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards successfully celebrated the achievements of artists and creators, reinforcing the genre’s immense cultural and commercial impact and setting the stage for continued innovation and success.
