Bokeem Woodbine’s Hilarious Gridlock’d Anecdote: 2Pac’s Failed Attempt to Flirt with Lucy Liu

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellAugust 20, 20254 Minutes read

Actor Bokeem Woodbine recently shared a lighthearted and memorable behind-the-scenes story from the set of the 1997 film “Gridlock’d,” recounting how legendary rapper and actor Tupac Shakur, known as 2Pac, attempted to impress co-star Lucy Liu, only to have his efforts amusingly fall flat. Woodbine’s anecdote offers a glimpse into the on-set dynamics and the personal charisma of 2Pac during the filming of this gritty crime drama. Woodbine recounted the story during an interview with The Art of Dialogue, recalling an instance when 2Pac approached his trailer with a specific objective in mind. “I just remember one day on set, ‘Pac coming to the knock on my trailer,” Woodbine began. “And he was like, ‘Yo, man, what are you doing?’ I was like, ‘I’m just chilling.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, man. I just came back from Lucy’s room and I’m trying to spit game.'” The phrase “spit game” refers to attempting to flirt or woo someone, indicating 2Pac’s romantic interest in Liu.

The Making of Gridlock’d

“Gridlock’d” is a 1997 American dark drama film written and directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, starring Tupac Shakur, Tim Roth, and Lucy Liu. The film follows the story of two heroin addicts, Spoon (Shakur) and Stretch (Roth), who decide to quit their habit after their bandmate, Cookie (Thandiwe Newton), nearly dies from an overdose. Their journey to enter a drug rehabilitation program is fraught with bureaucratic hurdles and encounters with local criminals. 2Pac, who was slain in 1996, four months before the film’s release, was a significant presence in the hip-hop and film industries. His contributions extended beyond acting, as he also wrote and performed songs for the film’s soundtrack. The film itself received critical acclaim for its gritty portrayal of addiction and societal struggles, with many noting Shakur’s strong performance, which showcased his potential as an actor. The film’s themes touched upon the harsh realities of urban life and the challenges faced by those trying to escape addiction, reflecting broader social issues that 2Pac often addressed in his music.

On-Set Dynamics: 2Pac’s Pursuit of Lucy Liu

Woodbine’s anecdote centers on 2Pac’s attempts to connect with Lucy Liu off-camera. According to Woodbine, Liu was practicing with “escrima sticks” at the time, a martial arts discipline involving the use of sticks. 2Pac, upon hearing about Liu’s practice, apparently saw an opportunity to engage her. “He was like, ‘Okay, well, maybe if I feign some interest and act like I’m interested in what she’s trying to talk to me about, it’ll get me closer to sealing the deal,'” Woodbine recalled 2Pac saying. This suggests 2Pac was trying to use Liu’s interest in martial arts as a way to get closer to her romantically. Woodbine elaborated on 2Pac’s strategy, stating that Liu was simply showing him the escrima sticks, and 2Pac felt he needed to reciprocate her interest, even if it was just to get closer to her. “She got me back there, got me swinging these sticks around, and I don’t care about no damn escrima,” Woodbine recalled 2Pac saying, conveying his playful frustration.

The Outcome and Reflections

When Woodbine asked 2Pac if his strategy worked, the response was a straightforward “No, it didn’t work.” Woodbine, finding the situation humorous, advised 2Pac, “Ah, don’t worry about it, man. You know, you can’t win them all.” Woodbine speculated that Liu might not have understood 2Pac’s intentions, or perhaps she simply “wasn’t vibing” with him in that specific way. He also noted that there wasn’t a language barrier, as Liu, who grew up in Queens, New York, is a native English speaker. Lucy Liu herself reflected on her time working with 2Pac in 2023, describing him as “nice” and recalling that they had a “great time together,” adding, “It’s so strange to think that he’s gone now.”

2Pac’s Enduring Legacy

Tupac Shakur’s impact on the music industry, particularly hip-hop, is immeasurable. His raw, introspective storytelling, social commentary, and poetic lyrical style set a new standard for vulnerability and honesty in rap music. Artists like Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and Drake have cited him as a major influence, both musically and philosophically. Beyond music, 2Pac was a pioneer in bridging the gap between hip-hop and Hollywood, paving the way for many artists to pursue acting careers. His role in “Gridlock’d” is considered one of his best performances, showcasing a depth and thoughtfulness that resonated with audiences and critics alike, further cementing his status as a multifaceted artist. The anecdotes shared by colleagues like Bokeem Woodbine add another layer to the rich tapestry of stories surrounding this iconic figure, highlighting his charisma and enduring presence in popular culture. The film “Gridlock’d,” despite its modest box office performance, remains a testament to 2Pac’s artistic contributions and legacy. It stands as a poignant reminder of the talent lost and the profound influence 2Pac continues to exert on music and storytelling.
