Chart Domination: 2025’s Top 5 Hip-Hop First-Week Sales Storm the Music Scene

Jin SatoJin SatoAugust 20, 20253 Minutes read

The landscape of hip-hop music in 2025 has been defined by a dynamic blend of established titans and groundbreaking artists, all vying for supremacy on the charts. As the year progresses, first-week album sales continue to serve as a crucial barometer of an artist’s immediate commercial impact and fan engagement. This year has witnessed a remarkable display of sales power, with several major releases capturing the attention of listeners and critics alike. These stories of commercial success highlight the enduring strength and evolving strategies within the rap genre.

Leading the pack and setting a high bar for the year, Playboi Carti’s highly anticipated album “MUSIC” has achieved the most significant first-week sales, solidifying his status as a dominant force in contemporary hip-hop. The album, released in March 2025, moved an impressive 298,000 equivalent album units in its debut week, according to multiple industry reports. This figure also represents the highest-streaming debut for any album in 2025 so far, underscoring Carti’s vast and dedicated fanbase’s immediate embrace of his unique sonic offerings. “MUSIC” has not only dominated initial sales but has also gone on to achieve significant streaming milestones, further cementing its place as a defining release of the year.

Following closely in second place is the collaborative effort from two of hip-hop’s most recognized artists, Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, with their joint project “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.” This highly anticipated album, which dropped in February 2025, garnered 246,000 equivalent album units in its opening week. The release not only showcased the undeniable chemistry between the two artists but also reinforced Drake’s consistent ability to command significant commercial success, even amidst his highly publicized lyrical exchanges earlier in the year. The project’s strong performance speaks volumes about the appeal of these collaborations within the hip-hop and R&B spheres.

Securing the third spot on the list is Travis Scott and his Cactus Jack collective with their release, “JACKBOYS 2.” This project achieved robust first-week sales, moving 232,000 equivalent album units. Travis Scott’s continued influence in the genre is undeniable, and “JACKBOYS 2” further demonstrates the collective’s ability to generate substantial commercial momentum, blending his signature sound with the contributions of his affiliated artists. The album’s success highlights the power of curated projects within the hip-hop ecosystem.

Tyler, The Creator, a consistent innovator in the rap game, lands in the fourth position with his album “DON’T TAP THE GLASS.” This release sold 197,000 equivalent album units in its first week, a testament to his enduring mainstream appeal and artistic evolution. “DON’T TAP THE GLASS” blends creative artistry with commercial viability, showcasing Tyler’s unique ability to capture both critical acclaim and significant sales figures, reaffirming his strong presence in today’s music landscape.

Rounding out the top five is Lil Baby with his album “WHAM.” Released in January 2025, the project debuted strongly, achieving 140,000 equivalent album units in its first week. This release marked Lil Baby’s fourth consecutive project to debut at the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 albums chart, a remarkable feat of consistency that underscores his unwavering popularity and the unwavering loyalty of his fanbase. “WHAM” also notably featured a significant contribution from Young Thug, marking one of his first publicly released verses after his legal proceedings.

While these five projects represent the pinnacle of first-week sales for hip-hop albums in 2025 thus far, other artists have also made significant waves. Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX,” for instance, has been widely recognized for its substantial sales and critical reception, with figures often placing it among the year’s top performers, although exact first-week sales figures vary across reports. Posthumous releases, such as Mac Miller’s “Balloonerism,” have also resonated deeply with fans, achieving impressive sales figures around an estimated 200,000 units. These broader success stories reflect the vibrant and competitive nature of the music industry, where legacy artists and new voices alike continue to drive sales and cultural conversations.

The trends observed in 2025’s hip-hop sales reflect a market that continues to embrace both traditional album consumption and the dominance of streaming platforms. The ability of artists to craft compelling narratives, foster strong fan engagement, and deliver impactful musical experiences remains key to achieving significant first-week sales. As the year unfolds, these stories of commercial triumph provide a compelling snapshot of hip-hop’s enduring power and its continuous evolution.
