DJ Enuff Exits Hot 97 After Nearly 30 Years Amidst Station Reshuffle; Tributes Pour In from Hip Hop Elite

Brianna JohnsonBrianna JohnsonAugust 31, 20254 Minutes read

New York City’s iconic hip-hop radio station, Hot 97, is undergoing a significant transition with the departure of veteran radio personality DJ Enuff, marking the end of a nearly three-decade tenure. His exit, confirmed on August 29, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the urban music landscape, prompting widespread tributes from hip-hop luminaries and sparking discussions about the future of the genre’s radio presence.

An Era Concludes at Hot 97

DJ Enuff, born Ephrem Louis Lopez Sr., began his journey at Hot 97 (WQHT) in 1998, quickly establishing himself as a formidable presence. His career at the station spanned various dayparts, from early mornings to late nights, solidifying his status as a consistent and influential voice. Known as “The Heavy Hitter” and “El Presidente,” Enuff also served as Hot 97’s Mixshow Coordinator, demonstrating his deep commitment to the station and the DJing craft. His career trajectory mirrors the evolution of hip-hop itself, from its burgeoning underground roots to its current global cultural dominance.

Before his extensive run at Hot 97, Enuff honed his skills at 98.7 KISS-FM, initially filling in for the legendary DJ Red Alert. His talent and popularity soon led to his own time slots, and his reputation grew significantly when he became the touring DJ for The Notorious B.I.G. This pivotal role cemented his place in hip-hop history, bringing his skills to stages worldwide during Biggie’s peak fame.

Tributes and Reactions from Hip Hop’s Inner Circle

The news of DJ Enuff’s departure was met with surprise and emotional responses from his peers. Hip-hop heavyweights, including Fat Joe and DJ Khaled, made immediate visits to Hot 97 to show their support for the departing DJ. Fat Joe, speaking to reporters, expressed his dismay, calling the situation “sad” and referencing Enuff’s long-standing history with the station, dating back to its 98.7 KISS-FM days. He noted that the news of Enuff’s exit spread rapidly, with many friends reaching out to him.

“It’s actually sad. I don’t know the politics of it, but the man’s been on here since 98.7 KISS. He’s been on Hot 97 for 27 years,” Fat Joe stated, underscoring the magnitude of the loss for the station and its listeners. DJ Khaled also appeared at the station to offer his solidarity. These public displays of support highlight the deep respect and brotherhood that DJ Enuff commands within the music community.

Station Reshuffle and the Funkmaster Flex Factor

DJ Enuff’s exit coincides with a broader lineup restructuring at Hot 97, notably involving fellow veteran DJ Funkmaster Flex. While Funkmaster Flex initially fueled speculation of his own departure with cryptic social media posts, it was later clarified that he would be shifting his timeslot, moving from his long-held 7 PM slot to a new 5 PM to 10 PM evening block. This strategic change sees Nessa Nitty taking over the 1 PM to 5 PM slot, while “Ebro in the Morning” will now run from 5 AM to 11 AM, and DJ Drewski is slated for the 11 AM to 1 PM slot.

Amidst the lineup changes, Enuff himself hinted at behind-the-scenes friction, suggesting that Funkmaster Flex might have played a role in his dismissal. In an interview with TMZ, Enuff stated, “I can’t prove it, but in my heart that’s what I feel that happened.” He added, “I don’t think Flex is going anywhere. Flex is staying. He’s just going to a new shift.” He also alluded to “snakes” in the industry working against him.

Funkmaster Flex, however, has vehemently denied any involvement in DJ Enuff’s firing. During his final broadcast in the 7 PM slot, Flex declared, “TMZ could never twist me up to flip on my guy, I love him to death. I would never have anything to do—not just my brother. I would have nothing to do with anyone being fired or no longer here.” He praised Enuff’s pioneering role in the New York club scene and his contributions to hip-hop parties, particularly within the Latin community, calling him an originator.

Cultural Impact and Future Outlook

DJ Enuff’s nearly three decades at Hot 97 have left an indelible mark on hip-hop radio. He has been instrumental in breaking new artists and delivering the top tracks that have defined generations of listeners. His role as a mentor to countless DJs and artists, particularly through his leadership of The Heavy Hitters DJ Crew, further cements his legacy as a foundational figure in preserving and advancing DJ culture. His dedication to authenticity, passion, and energy has made him synonymous with the station’s identity as a voice of the culture.

As Hot 97 navigates this new era, the departure of a respected personality like DJ Enuff underscores the evolving dynamics of traditional radio in an increasingly digital media landscape. While the station bids farewell to one of its most enduring voices, the rich tapestry of stories and music he curated ensures that his influence will continue to resonate within the fabric of hip-hop history. Fans and industry insiders alike will be watching to see where DJ Enuff’s next adventure will take him, and how Hot 97 will adapt to its new on-air configuration.
