Drake Takes Another Shot at Rick Ross, Questioning ‘Fake Diamonds’ in Podcast Jabs

Jolene CooperJolene CooperAugust 22, 20254 Minutes read

In the latest volley of his ongoing feud with Rick Ross, global music superstar Drake has launched another indirect, yet pointed, jab at the Maybach Music Group founder, this time questioning the authenticity of his opulent jewelry. The Canadian rapper’s comments surfaced during a recent podcast reunion with content creator Bobbi Althoff, reigniting discussions about luxury, status, and the fine line between genuine extravagance and manufactured image within the hip-hop industry.

The ‘Ice Rosé’ Pun and the Jewelers’ Secret

The controversial remark came as Drake and Althoff were sharing a bottle of rosé wine. Althoff remarked on the unusual act of “icing” rosé, to which Drake responded with a clever wordplay that directly alluded to Rick Ross, whose nickname is “Rozay.” “You’ve never seen someone ice rosé?” Drake queried before adding, “Well, talk to every jeweler in Miami that has fake diamonds.” This carefully crafted statement implied that “ice Rosay”—meaning Rick Ross—was adorned with counterfeit gems, a claim that quickly circulated through hip-hop news outlets and social media.

The subtle yet cutting remark from Drake suggests a deep dive into the perceived fakery of his rival’s much-publicized wealth and lifestyle. While Althoff reportedly did not catch the double entendre at the time, the hip-hop community widely interpreted it as Drake’s latest attempt to undermine Rick Ross’s credibility.

Fueling an Existing Fire: The Drake-Ross Feud

This jewelry-centric jab is not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of the very public beef that has unfolded between Drake and Rick Ross over the past year. The tension between the two artists, who have collaborated on several hit songs, reportedly escalated significantly earlier in 2024. It began with Rick Ross allegedly unfollowing Drake on Instagram amidst the highly publicized conflict between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Drake responded in kind with his diss track “Push Ups,” which included pointed lines seemingly aimed at Ross, such as: “I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky / Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this n turnin’ fifty / Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy / Spend that lil’ check you got and stay up out my business.”

Rick Ross retaliated with his own diss track, “Champagne Moments,” in which he accused Drake of undergoing cosmetic surgery, including a nose job and ab enhancement, and even suggested Drake was using Mounjaro, a diabetes medication for weight loss. Drake, in turn, publicly commented that Ross was “loopy” from the medication and that his accusations were fueled by anger and a lack of food, even referencing Ross’s past as a correctional officer.

Rick Ross and the Culture of Luxury Bling

Rick Ross has long cultivated an image synonymous with luxury, from his “Maybach Music” empire to his lavish lifestyle and distinctive jewelry. However, this is not the first time the “Hustlin'” rapper has faced scrutiny regarding the authenticity of his adornments. In the past, he has been accused of wearing fake watches, including a notable instance where a jeweler claimed his Audemars Piguet was counterfeit. While Ross has often maintained the legitimacy of his possessions, such claims contribute to a broader conversation within the music industry.

The hip-hop culture has a complex relationship with luxury and authenticity. For many artists, extravagant jewelry is a tangible symbol of success, a way to visually manifest the “rags to riches” narrative. However, this display can also invite skepticism. The prevalence of artists admitting to wearing imitation jewelry, either for financial reasons, trend-following, or to project a specific image, is well-documented. From Gucci Mane to Big Sean, many have openly confessed to sporting fake bling at various stages of their careers, highlighting the often-blurry lines in the pursuit of projecting an image of affluence.

Broader Hip-Hop Narratives and Authenticity

Drake’s latest comments on Rick Ross’s jewelry tap into these ongoing narratives about authenticity in hip-hop. The genre often celebrates the projection of wealth and success, making the perceived authenticity of an artist’s adornments a subtle yet significant aspect of their public persona. Even Drake himself has faced scrutiny regarding the authenticity of a recent Tupac Shakur chain he acquired, drawing criticism and debates about respecting legacy.

While Rick Ross has yet to issue a direct response to Drake’s “fake diamonds” quip, the ongoing verbal sparring continues to generate buzz. These exchanges serve not only as a testament to the competitive spirit within hip-hop but also as a reflection of how artists leverage every aspect of their public image, including their jewelry, to gain an edge in their lyrical battles and maintain relevance in the ever-evolving music landscape. The top stories in hip-hop often revolve around these personal feuds, keeping fans engaged with the drama and the artistry alike. The continued back-and-forth ensures that the rivalry between Drake and Rick Ross remains a prominent talking point in the music world.
