French Streamer Jean Pormanove’s Tragic End: Drake & Adin Ross Pledge Funeral Costs as Investigation into Alleged “Torture” Livestream Intensifies

Aisha MaxwellAisha MaxwellAugust 18, 20254 Minutes read

The online streaming world is reeling from the shocking death of French streamer Raphaël Graven, known to his followers as Jean Pormanove, who passed away on August 18, 2025, during a grueling 10-day marathon livestream on the platform Kick.

His death, which occurred while he was reportedly asleep during the broadcast, has ignited widespread outrage and prompted a multifaceted investigation by French authorities, drawing sharp criticism towards the streaming platform for its content moderation policies. Adding a layer of high-profile support, prominent figures in the music and streaming industries, including global music superstar Drake and popular streamer Adin Ross, have pledged to cover Pormanove’s funeral expenses, offering a gesture of solidarity to his grieving family.

A Marathon Livestream Turns Deadly

Jean Pormanove, 46, had cultivated a significant following across various social media and streaming platforms, including Kick, where he was known for engaging in extreme endurance challenges and content that frequently involved him being subjected to humiliation and physical mistreatment by co-streamers. Reports from French media, corroborated by various news outlets, detail that in the days leading up to his death, Pormanove allegedly endured “ten days and nights of torture.” This alleged mistreatment reportedly included sleep deprivation, physical violence such as beatings and strangulation, and being forced to ingest substances deemed toxic.

Thousands of viewers were tuned into the livestream when Pormanove was discovered unresponsive. The broadcast was subsequently interrupted, and his death was later confirmed. Fellow streamers, including those who collaborated with him, shared tributes and called for accountability, highlighting the dark side of online entertainment where extreme challenges can blur the lines of safety and well-being.

Industry Figures Step In Amidst Outcry

In the wake of the tragic news, Adin Ross took to his X account to announce that he and Drake would be jointly covering the funeral costs for Jean Pormanove. Ross expressed his horror and disgust at the circumstances surrounding the death, stating, “This is horrible and disgusting. Whoever was apart of this deserves to face severe consequences.” He added, “I just spoke with Drake. Drake and I will be covering the funeral costs, this won’t bring his life back, it’s the least we can do. Prayers go out to Jean’s family.”

Drake, who serves as an ambassador for Kick, has not yet issued a public statement. However, Ross’s announcement was met with appreciation from many in the online community, who praised the gesture as a compassionate response to a deeply disturbing event. This act of generosity from two influential figures in the entertainment sphere underscores the complex intersection of the music industry, streaming culture, and public responsibility.

Investigations and Platform Scrutiny

The circumstances of Pormanove’s death have triggered a significant response from French authorities. The prosecutor’s office in Nice has launched a judicial investigation to determine the exact cause of death and the extent of any criminal liability. While an initial autopsy reportedly found no signs of external trauma, suggesting potential medical or toxicological factors, further analyses have been ordered. French digital affairs minister Clara Chappaz has been particularly vocal, condemning the events as an “absolute horror” and indicating that the government intends to sue Kick for negligence, alleging the platform failed to adequately prevent the broadcast of dangerous content in violation of French law.

Kick, an Australian-based platform known for its more lenient content moderation policies compared to rivals like Twitch, has stated it is cooperating with the investigation and is conducting a thorough review of its content guidelines and practices. The platform has confirmed that all co-streamers involved in Pormanove’s final broadcast have been banned pending the outcome of the investigation. However, the incident has intensified calls for greater accountability and stricter enforcement of community standards across all live-streaming services, with concerns raised about the potential for exploitation and harm on platforms that attract a large audience, including many young viewers.

The Wider Impact on Streaming Culture

The tragic death of Jean Pormanove serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in the pursuit of viral content and audience engagement within the live-streaming ecosystem. The narrative of Pormanove’s final days, marked by alleged abuse for entertainment, highlights a critical debate about platform responsibility, the ethics of shock content, and the protection of vulnerable creators. It raises important questions for the future of online entertainment, particularly concerning the balance between freedom of expression and the imperative to safeguard individuals from harm. As investigations continue and the streaming community grapples with these issues, the focus remains on ensuring that such devastating events do not recur, and that platforms uphold rigorous standards to protect their users. This incident is likely to shape top stories and discussions surrounding digital safety and platform accountability for the foreseeable future, impacting the broader landscape of hip-hop and popular music culture’s engagement with online media.

Drake and Adin Ross’s commitment to covering the funeral costs is a notable contribution in the wake of this tragedy, offering a semblance of support while the broader implications for the streaming industry are still unfolding. The incident is expected to fuel ongoing discussions about the responsibilities of major platforms and the influence of prominent figures within the streaming and music spheres.
