Gunna Claims Top Spot in Rap Album Sales for August 23rd Week; Drake, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and Tyler, The Creator Round Out Top 5

Vik MehtaVik MehtaAugust 23, 20253 Minutes read

The landscape of hip hop music sales continues to be a dynamic arena, with the week ending August 23, 2025, showcasing a compelling mix of established titans and resilient artists making significant commercial waves. Gunna’s latest offering, “The Last Wun,” has emerged at the forefront, topping the charts for the week. Alongside him, prominent figures like Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, the ever-innovative Chance the Rapper, the consistently impactful Kendrick Lamar, and the versatile Tyler, The Creator, are all featured in the week’s top-selling rap albums, underscoring their enduring appeal and the genre’s robust health.

Gunna Dominates with “The Last Wun”

Gunna’s “The Last Wun” has secured the number one position among rap albums for the week, moving an impressive 48,000 units. This project, widely recognized as his final album under the YSL Records umbrella, has resonated strongly with fans, demonstrating his continued relevance and commercial power. While its initial release week saw a higher sales figure of around 80,000 to 81,000 equivalent album units, pushing it to #3 on the all-genre Billboard 200 and #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, the 48,000 units reported for this specific week solidify its top placement within the rap genre’s sales narrative. The album’s success is largely driven by streaming, accumulating over 104 million on-demand streams across platforms, highlighting the primary consumption method in today’s music industry.

Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR’s Collaborative Chart Presence

The collaborative effort between Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U,” lands at the second spot on this week’s rap album sales chart, moving 23,000 units. This figure reflects its continued traction amidst a competitive market. While the album’s initial release in February 2025 garnered significantly higher first-week sales, reaching 246,000 equivalent album units and debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200, its sustained presence signifies the lasting appeal of these two influential artists. Drake himself continues to dominate the broader music landscape, holding multiple albums on the Billboard 200 and recently being recognized by Billboard as the leading R&B/Hip Hop artist of the 21st century. Hits Daily Double reported 22,737 in activity for the album in the week of August 29, 2025, further illustrating its ongoing engagement.

Chance the Rapper’s “STAR LINE” Marks a Strong Comeback

Making a notable return to the charts, Chance the Rapper’s independent release, “STAR LINE,” has captured the third position with 22,000 units sold this week. The album debuted at #22 on the Billboard 200, representing a significant comeback for the artist, especially given its independent distribution. This performance, achieved without major label backing, speaks volumes about the loyalty of his fanbase and his strategic engagement with them. Chance’s ability to chart within the top 25, moving approximately 21,000 to 22,310 units overall, is a testament to his artistic evolution and his strong connection with listeners, marking a respectable showing in a crowded release window.

Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” Continues Its Enduring Impact

Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 release, “GNX,” demonstrates remarkable longevity, securing the fourth spot in rap album sales this week with 20,000 units moved. Despite being released the previous year, the album continues to perform strongly, topping The Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Rap Album Chart for the week of August 23, 2025, further underscoring its critical and commercial success within the hip hop sphere. “GNX” has been lauded for its consistent chart performance throughout 2025, previously being recognized as a top-selling album and holding the record for the longest-running #1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart.

Tyler, The Creator Rounds Out the Top 5

Rounding out this week’s top five rap albums is Tyler, The Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS,” which sold 20,000 units. This critically acclaimed project has been a consistent performer, also appearing on the Billboard 200 at #22 for the week. Tyler, The Creator has a proven track record of commercial success, with “DON’T TAP THE GLASS” marking his fourth consecutive #1 debut on the Billboard 200 during its release week, driven by strong pure sales and an innovative rollout strategy. His ability to blend artistic expression with significant commercial appeal continues to solidify his status as a pivotal artist in contemporary hip hop music.

The week of August 23, 2025, highlights the vibrant and diverse nature of the hip hop music industry. From Gunna’s chart-topping success and Chance the Rapper’s impressive independent comeback to the sustained impact of Kendrick Lamar and the consistent artistry of Tyler, The Creator, these stories reflect the genre’s dynamic evolution and its significant cultural footprint. The continued strong sales, driven by both new releases and enduring catalog hits, underscore the unwavering popularity and commercial viability of rap music.
