Gunna Dominates, Drake & Chance The Rapper Shine in August 2025’s Top Hip-Hop Album Sales

Donovan CarterDonovan CarterAugust 23, 20252 Minutes read

The landscape of hip-hop music has seen a dynamic shift, with August 2025 proving to be a significant month for album sales and chart performance. Spearheading the charge is Gunna, whose latest offering, “The Last Wun,” has captured the number one spot for highest-selling rap album this week, ending August 23, 2025. This achievement solidifies Gunna’s consistent presence at the forefront of the genre, marking his seventh top-10 effort on the Billboard charts. The album earned an impressive 48,000 units, demonstrating a strong engagement from his fanbase and reinforcing his status as a consistent chart performer.

Following closely in the top ranks is the collaborative effort from Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.” This project garnered 23,000 units sold, positioning it as a strong contender for one of the year’s highest-selling hip-hop albums and potentially earning Drake recognition as comeback artist of the year.

Making a notable return to the charts is Chance The Rapper with his new album, “STAR LINE.” Despite operating as an independent artist, Chance’s project debuted strongly, selling 22,000 units. This performance is particularly commendable given the absence of major label promotion, highlighting his dedicated following and artistic integrity. The album’s success also saw it debut at number 22 on the Billboard 200, showcasing a solid performance in a competitive release window and marking his third Top Album Sales Top 10 entry.

Beyond the leading trio, the week’s top sellers also feature other prominent artists in the hip-hop music scene. Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 release, “GNX,” continues to resonate with listeners, selling 20,000 units and remaining a strong presence on the charts. Similarly, Tyler, The Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS” also moved 20,000 units, proving his enduring appeal and the continued popularity of his music.

August 2025 has been a landmark month for album releases across the music spectrum, with hip-hop taking center stage. The month saw major releases from artists such as Kid Cudi with “Free,” JID’s “God Does Like Ugly,” and Ciara’s “CiCi,” among others, contributing to a rich tapestry of new sounds. These releases underscore the genre’s constant evolution and its ability to adapt to changing consumption patterns.

The success of these albums highlights key trends within the contemporary music industry. While streaming continues to dominate consumption, the ability of artists like Gunna to generate significant album-equivalent units and maintain chart presence underscores the enduring power of artist-fan connection. Gunna’s “The Last Wun,” for instance, achieved substantial streaming numbers, with over 104 million on-demand streams in its debut week, indicating a strong listener engagement that translates into chart success even with a modest number of pure sales.

This week’s chart performance not only celebrates individual artistic achievements but also reflects the broader narrative of hip-hop music in 2025. Established artists continue to innovate and command attention, while new projects from respected figures like Chance The Rapper demonstrate the viability of independent music. The consistent flow of compelling new music ensures that the hip-hop and rap music scene remains a vibrant and essential part of the global entertainment conversation, with these top stories setting the pace for the rest of the year. As the year progresses, the influence of these artists and their musical stories will undoubtedly continue to shape the genre’s trajectory.
