Lil Nas X Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Assault Charges After Naked Los Angeles Street Incident

Lil Nas X Faces Felony Charges After Altercation with Police

The globally recognized artist Lil Nas X, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, has been charged with four felony counts following an incident early Thursday morning in Los Angeles. The charges include three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one felony count of resisting an executive officer, stemming from an alleged altercation with law enforcement officers who responded to a call concerning the artist. This marks a significant legal challenge for the artist known for pushing boundaries in hip hop and popular music.

The incident, which occurred around 5:40 a.m. on August 21, 2025, saw officers dispatched to Ventura Boulevard in Studio City after reports of a naked individual in the street. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, when officers encountered the 26-year-old rapper, he allegedly charged at them, leading to his arrest. Authorities initially took Hill to a hospital for evaluation due to a suspected overdose before he was booked into jail. Video footage circulating at the time showed the artist in underwear and cowboy boots, later reportedly stripping down further, interacting with bystanders, and making cryptic remarks.

Legal Proceedings and Pleas

Following his arrest and subsequent hospitalization, Lil Nas X was held over the weekend before appearing in court on Monday, August 25, 2025, for his arraignment. During this court appearance, the artist entered a plea of not guilty to all felony charges. A judge set his bail at $75,000, with the condition that he attend a drug treatment program or Narcotics Anonymous meetings regularly. He is scheduled to return to court for his next pre-trial hearing on September 15, 2025.

If convicted, Lil Nas X could face up to five years in state prison. The Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan J. Hochman, stated, “Attacking police officers is more than just a crime against those individuals but a direct threat to public safety. Anyone who assaults law enforcement will face serious consequences, no matter who they are or how famous they may be.”.

Artist’s Reaction and Defense

In the wake of his arrest and the subsequent charges, Lil Nas X shared his experience via his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. He described the events as “terrifying” but reassured his fans that he would “be alright”. The artist’s social media posts offered a personal glimpse into his emotional state following the incident.

His attorney, Christy O’Connor, stated in court that the allegations represent an “absolute aberration” in his life, emphasizing that he has no prior criminal history. O’Connor also contested claims of drug use at the time of the incident, asserting there was no evidence to support such a conclusion. Lil Nas X’s father, Robert Stafford, also spoke out, stating his son was “very remorseful” and “in good spirits,” while also denying any involvement of illegal drugs. Stafford expressed hope that the ordeal would serve as a turning point for his son’s mental well-being and stressed the pressures of fame on the young artist, noting his role as a breadwinner and his family responsibilities. He mentioned that he and his son “shed tears” during a jail visit, emphasizing the emotional toll of the situation.

Background and Impact

Lil Nas X, a Grammy-winning artist, rose to prominence with his genre-bending hit “Old Town Road,” which blended country and hip-hop influences and set a record for weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Known for his innovative style and bold public persona, the artist has consistently made headlines, including past discussions about his mental health and recent hospitalization for facial paralysis. His music often pushes cultural and artistic boundaries, making him a significant figure in contemporary music stories.

This latest incident marks his most significant public controversy to date, occurring seven years after his breakout success. The situation underscores the ongoing dialogue surrounding mental health and substance use within the entertainment industry, as well as the legal ramifications of altercations with law enforcement. The impact on his upcoming music projects, including his second album “Dreamboy,” remains to be seen, but these are considered top stories in the hip hop and music news cycles. The artist’s ability to navigate these legal challenges while maintaining his public profile will be closely watched by fans and the industry alike.
