Lil Nas X Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Charges Following Naked Street Stroll and Alleged Assault on Officers

Alfonso BellajoAlfonso BellajoAugust 25, 20254 Minutes read

Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X, whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill, has entered a plea of not guilty to four felony charges stemming from a disruptive incident in Los Angeles last week. The plea, entered on Monday, August 25, 2025, follows his arrest on Thursday, August 21, 2025, after police responded to reports of a naked man walking along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City.

The Studio City Incident

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 11000 block of Ventura Boulevard around 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, August 21. They discovered the 26-year-old musician allegedly walking naked along the busy thoroughfare. When officers approached Hill, he is accused of charging at them. The confrontation led to his arrest, initially on suspicion of misdemeanor obstructing an officer. Following the arrest, authorities transported Lil Nas X to a local hospital due to concerns of a possible overdose before he was taken to the Van Nuys Jail.

Initial reports and video footage shared by TMZ depicted the artist, at times, wearing only white underwear and cowboy boots, walking and interacting with passersby. Later footage allegedly showed him completely naked. Witnesses and reports suggest he made comments about heading to a party, adding a layer of surrealism to the early morning event.

Felony Charges Filed

On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that felony charges had been filed against Montero Lamar Hill. He faces three felony counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one felony count of resisting an executive officer. District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated, “Attacking police officers is more than just a crime against those individuals but a direct threat to public safety. Anyone who assaults law enforcement will face serious consequences, no matter who they are or how famous they may be.”

These charges carry significant potential penalties. If convicted on all counts, Lil Nas X could face up to five years in state prison. The criminal complaint details that he allegedly “unlawfully use[d] force and violence and inflict[ed] an injury” on three separate officers engaged in their duty.

Not Guilty Plea and Bail

Appearing in a Van Nuys courthouse on Monday, August 25, Lil Nas X formally entered a plea of not guilty to all felony charges. His legal team, including attorney Christy O’Connor, was present. O’Connor described the incident as an “absolute aberration in this person’s life,” noting his otherwise “remarkable” history, which includes two Grammy Awards and significant contributions to contemporary music. The judge agreed to set bail at $75,000, a reduction from an initial higher amount, acknowledging Hill had no prior convictions and was not deemed a flight risk. He posted bail and was released from jail later that day.

Background and Career Context

Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill in Atlanta, Georgia, rose to global superstardom with his 2018 hit “Old Town Road.” The genre-bending track, a fusion of country and hip-hop, shattered Billboard records and earned him critical acclaim, including multiple Grammy Awards. His subsequent career has been marked by innovative music, bold fashion choices, and a significant impact on modern hip-hop culture. His album “Montero” further cemented his status as a groundbreaking artist. This legal entanglement comes after he had recently revealed to fans he had been hospitalized earlier in the year for partial facial paralysis, a health issue he assured followers he was recovering from.

Family Support and Artist’s Statement

Following his release, Lil Nas X shared a brief message with fans via his Instagram story, stating, “She’s gonna be OK, y’all. That was terrifying. That was a terrifying last four days but ya girl’s gonna be all right.” This marks his first public comment since the events unfolded.

His father, Robert Stafford, also spoke with reporters outside the courthouse, describing his son as “very remorseful for what happened” and committed to getting the help he needs. Stafford, a gospel musician, framed the incident as a high price of fame but emphasized his belief in his son’s resilience.

Legal Path Forward

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 15, 2025, at which time a judge will determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. The case is being closely watched, as it represents a significant legal challenge for the artist at the peak of his influential career. The outcome could have substantial implications for his future in the music industry and his public image.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division, with prosecution being handled by the Van Nuys Branch of the District Attorney’s Office. While Lil Nas X has pleaded not guilty, the serious nature of the felony charges underscores the potential ramifications of the events that transpired on a Studio City street. The case continues to develop, and further updates are expected as it progresses through the legal system.
