Nastee Delivers Timeless 90s NYC Hip Hop Sound on Highly Anticipated Debut LP ‘Current Events’

Daniela BalboaDaniela BalboaAugust 20, 20254 Minutes read

Nastee, a pivotal figure in the Vermont hip-hop scene and a former collaborator with the esteemed New York City collective Pro Era, has finally unveiled his long-awaited debut solo album, “Current Events.” The project, released through his own label, AfterLyfe Music, is being hailed as a masterclass in 90s-style hip-hop craftsmanship, offering a sound that is both a nostalgic throwback and remarkably fresh. This release marks a significant moment for Vermont’s independent music landscape, drawing comparisons to other notable 2025 Vermont hip-hop albums from artists like Joint Manipulation, Devon Dutchmaster, and Asterisk.

The album’s sonic identity is deeply rooted in the classic New York City hip-hop sound of the 1990s. Nastee, who also serves as a producer, engineer, and mogul, infuses “Current Events” with a melodic approach to boom-bap compositions, clearly influenced by the production techniques of legends like Pete Rock. His production style involves taking carefully layered samples and not just chopping and looping them, but reharmonizing them into entirely new musical pieces, a hallmark of sophisticated boom-bap. This dedication to classic production values is evident throughout the album, creating a rich tapestry of sound that appeals to fans of traditional hip-hop.

From the outset, “Current Events” establishes its ambitious tone. The opening track, “1st Album Intro,” features Nastee and fellow artist Konflik in the studio, with Nastee explicitly stating his aim for the album to be his “Illmatic,” referencing Nas’s seminal 1994 debut. This bold comparison sets a high bar, and the album largely meets the expectation, delivering a collection of “wall-to-wall bangers.” Nastee’s performance across the LP is described as urgent and passionate, presenting the album not as a victory lap but as an “urgent manifesto from a man on fire.”

A Strong Lineup of Collaborators

A significant aspect of “Current Events” is the impressive roster of guest artists who contribute to its overall impact. The album features notable MCs such as Termanology, CJ Fly, and REKS, each bringing their distinct styles and lyrical prowess to their respective tracks. Termanology delivers a standout verse on the track “No Funny,” while CJ Fly offers a deeply heartfelt performance on “Horizons.” REKS is featured on “Free,” where he channels the smooth delivery reminiscent of AZ, another East Coast icon. The consistent quality of these features underscores Nastee’s ability to curate a project that elevates each contributing artist, ensuring that every guest gives “110 percent.” Konflik also plays a crucial role, with his distinctive baritone serving as an essential ingredient throughout the album.

Nastee’s Artistic Evolution and Roots

Nastee’s journey in hip-hop began in the early days of the Vermont scene, where he was a cofounder of the collective VT Union alongside Dakota and the late DJ A_Dog. This group was instrumental in shaping the local hip-hop identity through powerful live shows and a series of influential mixtapes. Nastee’s experience extends beyond Vermont; he honed his skills by working with the legendary New York City collective Pro Era. This period of collaboration in the heart of hip-hop’s mecca provided him with invaluable experience and inspiration, which he later channeled into establishing his own Vermont-based label, AfterLyfe Music.

His lyrical delivery on “Current Events” is sharp and versatile. Whether asserting his presence in the game on “We Here,” weaving vivid narratives in “Knowhere,” or offering a critical perspective on media manipulation in “Evening News,” Nastee demonstrates a keen pen game and perfectly calibrated vocal performances. His commitment to the craft is evident, making this debut LP a powerful statement of his artistic maturity and dedication to the hip-hop genre.

The Vermont Hip-Hop Context of 2025

The release of “Current Events” places Nastee firmly within the context of a particularly strong year for Vermont hip-hop in 2025. Fellow artists like Joint Manipulation, with their “all-time hardcore classic” The One You Feed, and Devon Dutchmaster, whose debut Puzzle Pieces made a significant impact, have already set a high standard. Asterisk’s collaboration-filled No School further solidifies the state’s growing reputation for quality hip-hop music. Within this distinguished cohort, Nastee’s “Current Events” is positioned as a contender for the top spot, showcasing his mastery of the genre and meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the album.

A New York State of Mind

The album’s adherence to the 90s New York City style is a deliberate choice that resonates deeply with the current appreciation for “real hip-hop.” This revival of classic hip-hop elements—such as intricate song structures and clear lyrical delivery—is a trend that appeals to long-time fans. Nastee’s ability to capture this essence while infusing it with his own distinct hunger and urgency makes “Current Events” a compelling listen. The project not only pays homage to the golden era but also proves that these foundational sounds can still feel contemporary and exciting.

In conclusion, Nastee’s debut LP, “Current Events,” is a triumphant arrival for a seasoned artist. It stands as a testament to his enduring passion for hip-hop, his deep connection to the genre’s roots, and his evolution as both an MC and a producer. The album’s cohesive sound, stellar collaborations, and Nastee’s commanding presence solidify its place as a significant release, not only within Vermont’s burgeoning hip-hop scene but also as a shining example of expertly crafted, 90s-inspired music that feels perfectly timed for today’s music landscape.
