New Music Friday August 29, 2025: Joey Bada$$, Ella Mai, and Sabrina Carpenter Lead a Diverse Week in Hip-Hop and R&B

Daniela BalboaDaniela BalboaAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The landscape of contemporary music was significantly enlivened on Friday, August 29, 2025, as a robust slate of releases dropped across hip-hop and R&B. Headlined by new projects from Joey Bada$$, a soulful comeback from Ella Mai, and a fresh track from Sabrina Carpenter, the week underscored the genre’s dynamic evolution and enduring power. Alongside these prominent releases, the music world also buzzed with the unveiling of Billboard’s highly anticipated “Top 10 Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century” list, offering a retrospective on the genre’s monumental impact.

Joey Bada$$ Ascends with ‘Lonely At The Top’

Fans of lyrical prowess and introspective hip-hop rejoiced as Joey Bada$$ delivered his fourth studio album, ‘Lonely At The Top,’ on August 29th. This highly anticipated project, released via Columbia Records/Pro Era/Cinematic Music Group, explores themes of fame, solitude, and self-awareness, featuring sharp lyricism and layered production. The album boasts an impressive roster of collaborators, including Westside Gunn, Ab-Soul, Rapsody, A$AP Ferg, and Ty Dolla $ign, with production contributions from industry heavyweights like Statik Selektah and Boi-1da. The release followed a slight delay from an initial August 1st date, attributed to label setbacks, adding an extra layer of anticipation for the Pro Era co-founder’s latest offering.

Following the success of his previous project ‘2000,’ Joey Bada$$ has navigated a path that balances his musical career with acting ventures. His recent assertion that his controversial songs were made to “compete in the sport of hip-hop” suggests a renewed competitive spirit fueling this album. Fans can anticipate seeing him perform tracks from ‘Lonely At The Top’ on his upcoming “The Dark Aura Tour” scheduled for the fall, further solidifying his presence in the hip-hop narrative.

Sabrina Carpenter and Ella Mai’s Latest Offerings

Sabrina Carpenter also contributed to the week’s musical output with the release of her new track, “Man’s Best Friend.” While details remain sparse on its specific genre, Carpenter continues to carve out a significant space in the pop and R&B adjacent scene, building on a consistent stream of popular releases.

Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning R&B star Ella Mai made a powerful return with her new single, “Tell Her.” Produced by her frequent collaborator DJ Mustard, the track is described as a confident, soulful anthem that delves into themes of trust, loyalty, and emotional clarity in modern relationships. “Tell Her” marks Mai’s first release since her 2024 EP ‘3,’ signaling a new chapter for the British singer-songwriter. Her velvety vocals paired with Mustard’s signature smooth, bouncy production create a sound that is both nostalgic and distinctly current, reaffirming her status as a compelling voice in contemporary R&B.

A Wealth of Hip-Hop and R&B Releases

The week of August 29th was a significant one for hip-hop, with several other notable artists dropping new music. Westside Gunn unveiled his latest 12-track album, “Heels Have Eyes 2,” on August 28th, coinciding with “Westside Gunn Day” in his hometown of Buffalo, NY. This project continues Gunn’s unique fusion of music, art, fashion, and wrestling, featuring a diverse array of producers and collaborators. The release is a follow-up to his earlier EP “Heels Have Eyes” and includes tracks like “Heel Cena” and “Brikolai Volkoff.”

The legendary Rakim, celebrated as “The God MC,” also returned with “The Re-Up,” a collaborative album with producer Big Ghost LTD, released on August 29th. The project, preceded by the single “Not To Be Defined,” which has garnered significant attention, further cements Rakim’s legacy. Adding to the diverse sonic tapestry, DJ Snake and Don Toliver joined forces for the late-summer anthem “Something Wrong,” a track hinting at DJ Snake’s upcoming album ‘NOMAD.’ Furthermore, DJ Khaled released “Brother,” a collaboration featuring Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy, as a precursor to his own album, ‘Aalam of God.’

Regrettably, fans of Erykah Badu and The Alchemist faced disappointment as their highly anticipated collaborative album, “Abi & Alan,” was unexpectedly delayed on its scheduled August 29th release date, with Badu citing The Alchemist as the cause via social media. This marks a significant postponement for Badu’s first album in 15 years.

Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop Stories of the 21st Century

Adding significant context to the week’s releases, Billboard published its list of the “Top 10 Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century” on August 28, 2025. Topping the chart was Lil Nas X’s genre-bending hit “Industry Baby,” followed by Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” and the Post Malone and 21 Savage collaboration “Rockstar.” The list highlighted the genre’s immense cultural footprint and ability to consistently reinvent itself. In related news, Drake was recognized as Billboard’s top hip-hop artist of the 21st century, a testament to his sustained chart dominance and prolific career, showcasing his significant influence and consistent success within the music industry.

Conclusion: A Week of Sonic Diversity

As August 2025 drew to a close, the music world was treated to a remarkable array of talent and creativity. From Joey Bada$$’s introspective depth and Ella Mai’s soulful resonance to the continued influence of hip-hop titans like Rakim and Westside Gunn, the week offered something for every listener. These releases, coupled with the retrospective look at hip-hop’s greatest hits, underscored the genre’s vibrant present and its storied past, promising an exciting future for music. The diverse sounds and narratives presented this week reinforce the enduring power and constant evolution of hip-hop and R&B.
