New Music Friday, August 29, 2025: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter & Ella Mai Lead a Diverse Hip-Hop and R&B Harvest

New Music Friday August 29, 2025: Hip-Hop and R&B Unleash a Torrent of Top-Tier Releases

The music landscape was abuzz on Friday, August 29, 2025, as “New Music Friday” delivered a robust slate of highly anticipated albums and singles across the hip-hop and R&B genres. This week saw established titans and rising stars alike dropping projects that ranged from introspective explorations to boundary-pushing artistic statements, offering a diverse sonic palette for listeners. Headlining the day’s releases were significant album drops from Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Westside Gunn, Rakim, and D Smoke, alongside impactful singles from Ella Mai, NBA YoungBoy, Post Malone, and DJ Khaled, solidifying the week as a major event in contemporary music stories.

Joey Bada$$: “Lonely At The Top” Marks a Mature Evolution in Hip-Hop

Joey Bada$$ further cemented his artistic growth with the release of his fourth studio album, “Lonely At The Top,” on August 29, 2025. Delayed from an initial August 1st drop due to label issues, which the Brooklyn MC vocally critiqued, the album finally arrived to critical acclaim. “Lonely At The Top” showcases Joey’s ability to blend his signature lyrical prowess with more melodic and relaxed tones, signaling a clear evolution beyond his boom-bap roots. The 11-track project features collaborations with an array of notable artists including Westside Gunn, A$AP Ferg, Ty Dolla $ign, Rome Streetz, Kai Ca$h, CJ Fly, Ab-Soul, and Rapsody, with production credits from Statik Selektah, Chuck Strangers, and Hitmaka, among others. The album has been praised for its laid-back atmosphere and Joey’s strongest vocal performances to date, offering a nuanced perspective on introspection and R&B-rap fusion.

Sabrina Carpenter: “Man’s Best Friend” – Pop’s Provocateur Returns with Controversial Artistry

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter commanded significant attention with the release of her seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend,” on August 29, 2025. The album, produced by Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, dives into pop, disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock. However, it was the album’s provocative cover art—depicting Carpenter on her knees with a man pulling her hair—that ignited widespread debate. Critics, including Glasgow Women’s Aid, deemed the imagery “regressive” and a harmful promotion of misogynistic stereotypes. Carpenter, however, defended the art as a “metaphor” for control and a personal exploration of themes like loyalty and power dynamics, even releasing alternative covers, one famously “approved by God.” The lead single, “Manchild,” released earlier in the summer, along with the second single “Tears,” set the stage for an album that challenges conventions and sparks conversation.

Ella Mai: “Tell Her” – R&B Royalty Sets Boundaries with Mustard-Produced Single

Grammy Award-winning R&B star Ella Mai made a powerful comeback on August 29, 2025, with the release of her new single “Tell Her.” Produced by longtime collaborator Mustard, the track is a sophisticated blend of Ella’s signature soulful vocals and a smooth, bouncy beat. Lyrically, “Tell Her” addresses themes of trust, loyalty, and the importance of setting clear boundaries in relationships, with an assertive plea for emotional clarity that subtly interpolates Destiny’s Child’s iconic “Say My Name.” This release marks Ella Mai’s first music since her 2024 EP “3,” signaling an exciting new era for the artist, and has fans eagerly anticipating a potential full-length album.

The Hip-Hop Landscape: Diverse Sounds from Gritty to Polished

Beyond the major headliners, the day was rich with diverse hip-hop offerings. Westside Gunn continued his prolific output with “Heels Have Eyes 2,” a project lauded for its gritty production, vivid street storytelling, and art-forward style. The album, executive produced by Gunn himself, features collaborations with Benny The Butcher, Stove God Cooks, and Skyzoo, among others, and is noted for its consistency and unique blend of music and wrestling culture.

Legendary MC Rakim teamed up with producer Big Ghost Ltd. for “The Re-Up,” a remixed version of his comeback album “G.O.Ds NETWORK – REB7RTH.” This project offers all-new beats and enhances the original release, showcasing Rakim’s enduring lyrical skill alongside a host of respected features like Planet Asia, Ras Kass, Kool G Rap, and Method Man. The album also includes Rakim’s solo single, “I’m Good,” produced by Big Ghost.

D Smoke unveiled his third studio album, “Wake Up Supa,” on August 26, 2025, marking his debut under Death Row Records. The album is an introspective journey exploring themes of awakening, resilience, and community, featuring collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Lucky Daye, and BJ The Chicago Kid. Produced by Terrace Martin and D Smoke himself, “Wake Up Supa” offers layered narratives that blend personal experiences with social commentary, reinforcing D Smoke’s status as a vital voice in contemporary rap.

Star-Studded Singles and Unexpected Collaborations

The singles landscape was equally compelling. NBA YoungBoy and Post Malone joined forces with DJ Khaled for the impactful track “Brother.” This collaboration, part of Khaled’s upcoming 14th album, “Aalam of God,” blends trap percussion with country-inspired undertones, exploring themes of loyalty and family. Khaled also released “You Remind Me,” featuring dancehall heavyweights Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton, showcasing his signature knack for star-studded collaborations.

The Kid Laroi continued to tease new material with the release of “SHE DON’T NEED TO KNOW,” a single that delves into themes of romantic conflict and features a star-studded music video. The track, produced by a team including Jon Bellion and Pete Nappi, maintains Laroi’s signature swing style and head-nodding rhythm.

Other Notable Releases Adding Depth to the Week

Adding further richness to the August 29th release schedule was Erykah Badu and The Alchemist’s collaborative album, “Abi & Alan.” While the project’s release was shrouded in some confusion, with both artists clarifying the rollout, it represents Badu’s first studio album in nearly a decade and a highly anticipated pairing of neo-soul and hip-hop production. Key Glock also expanded his catalog with “Glockaveli: All Eyez On Key,” a deluxe edition that pays homage to Tupac Shakur, adding 10 new tracks to his earlier album.

This “New Music Friday” was a testament to the vibrant and evolving nature of modern music, with artists across hip-hop and R&B delivering projects that were both artistically adventurous and commercially impactful. The variety of stories told through these releases underscores the genre’s continued dominance and its capacity for innovation.
