New Music Friday Dominates August 2025: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, Ella Mai Lead a Stellar Week of Releases

Jolene CooperJolene CooperAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025, a date etched into the calendars of music aficionados, proved to be a monumental day for new releases, with a diverse array of artists dropping highly anticipated projects. From the introspective rhymes of Joey Bada$$ and the polished pop of Sabrina Carpenter to the soulful R&B stylings of Ella Mai, this ‘New Music Friday’ delivered a rich tapestry of sounds across the hip-hop and R&B landscapes, solidifying its place as one of the most significant music drops of the year.

Hip-Hop’s Titans Deliver Fresh Narratives

Veteran wordsmith Joey Bada$$ made his triumphant return with his latest album, “Lonely At The Top,” released on August 29th. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes across 11 tracks, the project is a testament to Bada$$’s evolving artistry, balancing his signature raw lyricism with newfound introspection and experimentation. He described the album, created in under six months with a mixtape mentality, as an effort to “get some raps off and feed the core,” while also incorporating elements that cater to “every type of fan”. The album features a curated list of collaborators, including Westside Gunn, Ty Dolla $ign, A$AP Ferg, Ab-Soul, and Rapsody, who contribute distinct textures that complement Bada$$’s steady cadence and thoughtful prose. This release marks Bada$$’s first full-length solo album in three years, following up on his 2022 project “2000”.

Adding to the hip-hop fervor, Westside Gunn unleashed his latest body of work, “Heels Have Eyes 2,” on August 28th. This 12-track project serves as a sequel to his earlier EP of the same name and positions Gunn as a pivotal figure in the modern rap scene. Released during a particularly strong week for hip-hop, the album boasts appearances from fellow Griselda artist Benny The Butcher, Stove God Cooks, Skyzoo, and more, showcasing Gunn’s consistent ability to curate a distinct sonic experience described by the artist himself as an “art class”.

Meanwhile, the legendary Rakim partnered with producer Big Ghost Ltd. to deliver “The Re-Up,” a remixed version of his comeback album, “G.O.Ds NETWORK – REB7RTH.” Dropping on August 29th, this project offers a fresh sonic palette with all-new beats and a few additional tracks, enhancing the original work. “The Re-Up” features an impressive roster of lyrical heavyweights, including Lazarus, Eddie Kaine, Hus Kingpin, Planet Asia, Ras Kass, 38 Spesh, Skyzoo, Canibus, Chino XL, Kool G Rap, Method Man, and Prodigy, further cementing Rakim’s status as a foundational figure in hip-hop. This release follows Rakim’s recent recognition with a Peabody Medal, acknowledging his significant contributions to the genre.

Pop and R&B Showcase Chart Dominance and Soulful Expressions

On the pop front, Sabrina Carpenter captivated audiences with her seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend,” released on August 29th. Primarily a pop album infused with elements of disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock, it was produced in collaboration with Jack Antonoff and John Ryan. The album’s lead single, “Manchild,” had already achieved chart-topping success prior to the album’s release, hinting at its commercial appeal. The album’s provocative cover art, depicting themes of control and interpretation, sparked considerable discussion, though many fans and critics defended it as artistic expression. Industry predictions suggest “Man’s Best Friend” is poised for a massive commercial debut, potentially hitting number one on the Billboard 200 with the year’s highest first-week sales for a female artist.

Ella Mai, the Grammy Award-winning R&B songstress, also graced “New Music Friday” with her presence, releasing the compelling single “Tell Her” on August 29th. This marks her first new music since her 2024 EP “3,” and it continues the narrative established by her popular track “Little Things”. Produced by Mustard, “Tell Her” delves into themes of setting boundaries, emotional clarity, and maintaining compassion within relationships, showcasing Mai’s signature blend of vulnerability and strength. The track is lauded for its smooth, R&B production and Ella Mai’s confident vocal delivery.

Collaborative Power and Anticipated Singles

Adding to the week’s bounty, DJ Khaled unveiled two new singles, “You Remind Me” and “Brother,” on August 29th, serving as the first taste of his forthcoming 14th studio album, “Aalam of God”. “You Remind Me” is a vibrant, dancehall-infused track featuring an impressive assembly of Jamaican stars including Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Mavado, Bounty Killer, RoryStoneLove, and Kaylan Arnold. It samples Gyptian’s 2010 hit “Hold Yuh” and brings together a multi-generational supergroup. The second single, “Brother,” offers a more introspective tone, featuring an acoustic-guitar driven collaboration with Post Malone and NBA YoungBoy Never Broke Again, exploring themes of loyalty and brotherhood. These singles signal Khaled’s return to active release after a three-year hiatus from studio albums.

Post Malone, who is increasingly venturing into country music, was featured on DJ Khaled’s “Brother.” While this collaboration leans more towards his hip-hop roots, Malone has been candid about his ongoing work on a dedicated country album, having reportedly recorded around 35 tracks. His recent musical direction suggests a continued willingness to explore diverse genres.

NBA YoungBoy has maintained his prolific release schedule, with “Brother” being his latest featured appearance. This follows his album “MASA,” released in July 2025, and an earlier announced album “Make America Slime Again” for July 4, 2025. His consistent output highlights his significant presence in the hip-hop world.

This “New Music Friday” in August 2025 underscored the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the music industry. With established legends and rising stars alike dropping significant projects, the week provided a rich array of sounds and stories for fans, reaffirming the enduring power of hip-hop and R&B music.
