New Music Friday: Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ella Mai Lead Star-Studded August 29th Release Slate

Donovan CarterDonovan CarterAugust 28, 20252 Minutes read

The final Friday of August 2025, the 29th, proved to be a monumental day for new music releases, with major players across hip-hop and pop delivering highly anticipated projects. Headlining the diverse slate were Joey Bada$$, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ella Mai, each marking significant milestones in their careers.

Joey Bada$$ Navigates Solitude with ‘Lonely At The Top’

Following a slight delay from its initial August 1st date due to label issues, Joey Bada$$ officially dropped his fourth studio album, “Lonely At The Top,” on August 29th. The project, which explores themes of fame, isolation, and self-awareness, features a robust 11 tracks. Collaborations with esteemed artists such as Ab-Soul, Ty Dolla $ign, and Westside Gunn lend significant weight to the album, solidifying its place as a key hip-hop story of the year. “Lonely At The Top” is described as a mature evolution for the Brooklyn MC, showcasing his lyrical prowess and introspective storytelling. The album’s release is further supported by his upcoming “The Dark Aura Tour,” set to commence in October with Ab-Soul and Rapsody.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Pop Evolution Continues with ‘Man’s Best Friend’

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter continued her upward trajectory with the release of her seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend,” also on August 29th. This 12-track collection delves deeper into Carpenter’s signature blend of catchy melodies, sharp lyricism, and bold themes. Co-produced by acclaimed collaborators Amy Allen, Jack Antonoff, and John Ryan, the album follows up her massively successful 2024 album, “Short n’ Sweet.” “Man’s Best Friend” is led by the infectious single “Manchild,” which has already garnered significant chart success, and is further represented by the release of the single “Tears” alongside the album. The project has been noted for its sophisticated pop sound, incorporating elements of disco-pop, funk, and R&B, signaling Carpenter’s continued artistic growth and cementing her status as a top-tier artist in contemporary music.

Ella Mai Offers Reassurance with Mustard-Produced Single ‘Tell Her’

Adding to the R&B offerings of the week, Grammy Award-winning artist Ella Mai unveiled her brand-new single, “Tell Her,” on August 29th. Produced by her long-time collaborator Mustard, the track marks Mai’s first release since her 2024 EP “3.” “Tell Her” is a confident, slow-burning R&B anthem that highlights themes of loyalty, reassurance, and setting boundaries in relationships. Mai’s soulful vocals are perfectly complemented by Mustard’s signature understated production, creating a sound that is both classic and modern. The song, which interpolates Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name,” has been praised for its directness and emotional clarity, reaffirming Mai’s position as an authentic and resonant voice in modern R&B.

A Packed New Music Friday for Hip-Hop and R&B

The week of August 29th was a significant period for hip-hop and R&B, extending beyond the major releases from Joey Bada$$ and Ella Mai. Westside Gunn dropped his project “Heels Have Eyes 2,” continuing his unique fusion of music, art, and culture. Legendary MC Rakim, in collaboration with producer Big Ghost LTD, released their highly anticipated joint album “The Re-Up,” a project celebrated for its boom-bap revival. Furthermore, D Smoke released his third studio album, “Wake Up Supa,” on August 26th, contributing to the week’s impressive lineup of impactful music. These releases collectively underscore the vibrant and diverse landscape of hip-hop and R&B in late 2025, offering fans a rich selection of stories and sounds from established and emerging artists alike.

This New Music Friday delivered a compelling testament to the enduring power and creativity within the hip-hop and R&B genres, with each artist contributing distinct voices and narratives to the week’s top music stories.
