South African Hip Hop’s New Guard Dominates 2025 SAMA Best Album Nominations

Daniela BalboaDaniela BalboaAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

The landscape of South African hip hop is vibrant, evolving, and on full display with the announcement of the nominees for the Best Hip Hop Album at the 31st annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs), SAMA31. Revealed on August 28, 2025, the shortlist showcases a dynamic array of talent, reflecting the genre’s current trajectory and the emerging voices that are shaping its future. The winners are set to be celebrated in November during an evolved hybrid ceremony, blending the intimacy of a live event with the expansive reach of a virtual broadcast, all under the theme “Less Noise. More Music.”

This year’s nominations in the highly competitive hip hop category highlight a significant generational shift, moving beyond the established titans to champion artists who are pushing creative boundaries and telling authentic South African stories. The five nominated albums represent diverse sonic explorations, from introspective lyricism and street narratives to the seamless incorporation of amapiano and R&B elements, underscoring the genre’s rich adaptability.

The Nominated Hip Hop Albums

The nominees for Best Hip Hop Album at SAMA31 are:

* Blxckie – “See U Soon Deluxe”: Durban’s own Blxckie, also known as Somnyama, has solidified his position as a leading force in South African hip hop since his breakout in 2020. His nominated project, “See U Soon Deluxe,” an expanded version of his major label debut released in November 2024, is recognized for its melodic trap style and effortless flow. The album showcases Blxckie’s versatility, incorporating influences from amapiano and dancehall, and features standout tracks that highlight his artistic range.

* Tony Dayimane – “Red October: Induction”: Emerging from the Durban scene, Tony Dayimane is recognized for his deeply personal and hard-hitting approach to storytelling. “Red October: Induction,” released on October 25, 2024, delves into themes of family, resilience, and personal growth. The album, which garnered over 1.1 million streams in its debut week, features collaborations with prominent artists, offering a raw and uncompromising glimpse into his journey and rise within the industry.

* Loatinover Pounds – “Pray 4 Pitori”: Pretoria-based rapper Loatinover Pounds brings a unique, church-inspired energy to his debut album, “Pray 4 Pitori,” released in September 2024. This project is a profound homage to his hometown, lauded for its high-quality production and musicality. The album has resonated deeply with street culture, showcasing Loatinover Pounds as an authentic new voice who masterfully blends amapiano sensibilities with classic hip hop, praying for positive change for his city.

* Sizwe Alakine – “Audio 2D; Dear Darkie”: Sizwe Alakine, the alter ego of acclaimed rapper Reason, presents “Audio 2D; Dear Darkie,” a 2024 release that boldly infuses amapiano with classic hip hop. This 14-track project samples kwaito elements and old-school Mzansi rap, creating what has been described as a “quintessential kasi rap” experience. Released in September 2024, the album pushes sonic boundaries and is celebrated for its ability to bridge genres within the South African music ecosystem.

* 25K – “Loyal To The Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms”: Hailing from Pretoria, 25K, also known as “The Don,” is a pioneer of the city’s rap scene. His sophomore album, “Loyal To The Plug: The Life & Times of Don Kilograms,” released in October 2024, explores themes of loyalty, brotherhood, maturity, and love, while motivating listeners. The album reflects his artistic evolution and steadfast dedication to his roots, cementing his reputation as a storyteller whose narratives are rooted in lived experiences.

A New Era for South African Hip Hop

The nominations for Best Hip Hop Album at SAMA31 are particularly noteworthy for the absence of several long-standing figures who have historically dominated the category. This shift signals a significant transition, highlighting the emergence of a new generation of artists who are not only achieving critical acclaim but are also driving the sonic evolution of hip hop in South Africa. These artists are blending diverse influences, experimenting with sounds, and continuing the tradition of powerful storytelling that defines the genre.

Unati Gwija, SAMA Spokesperson, commented on the nominations, stating, “This year’s nominations form a symphony of South African sound, a playlist that celebrates not only genres, but the journeys behind them.” She added, “It is the wisdom of age meeting the exuberance of youth, as emerging voices and established icons go head-to-head across categories. From amapiano trailblazers to jazz virtuosos, gospel powerhouses to hip hop poets, we are living through a golden era where boundaries blur and music reigns supreme.” This sentiment particularly rings true for the hip hop category, which is packed with fresh talent.

Anticipation for SAMA31

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) has meticulously curated the SAMA31 nominations, recognizing excellence across 25 categories. The upcoming awards ceremony in November 2025 promises to be a landmark event, continuing the SAMA tradition of celebrating the nation’s musical achievements. The move to a hybrid format signifies an effort to amplify the reach of the awards, making the celebration of South African music more accessible than ever before.

With such a strong and diverse lineup in the Best Hip Hop Album category, the competition is fierce. Each nominated artist and project offers a unique perspective and a compelling narrative, contributing to the rich tapestry of South African music stories. As November approaches, the industry and fans alike eagerly await the announcement of the winner, celebrating the continued growth and innovation within South African hip hop.
