T-Pain Takes Center Stage with BMI President’s Award, Celebrating a Transformative Career in R&B/Hip-Hop

C-DubC-DubAugust 28, 20254 Minutes read

Los Angeles, CA – August 28, 2025 – The Fairmont Century Plaza was aglow with the industry’s brightest stars as Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) hosted its highly anticipated 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The prestigious ceremony honored the unparalleled artistry and profound impact of music titans, with GRAMMY-winning artist, producer, and songwriter T-Pain receiving the coveted BMI President’s Award, the night’s highest accolade. The event also celebrated rising force GloRilla with the BMI Impact Award, recognizing a generation of talent shaping the future of music.

T-Pain: A Revolutionary Force Honored with the President’s Award

T-Pain, born Faheem Rasheed Najm, was recognized for his tremendous career, marked by a formidable catalog of hit songs that have resonated across generations and connected with audiences worldwide. His selection for the BMI President’s Award signifies a career defined by groundbreaking innovation, exceptional talent, and an undeniable influence on the R&B and hip-hop music landscapes. T-Pain’s journey in the music industry has been nothing short of transformative, particularly his pioneering and popularizing of Auto-Tune as a creative vocal effect. What was once viewed as a correctional tool, T-Pain masterfully molded into an expressive instrument, a signature sound that defined an era and inspired countless artists.

Since joining BMI in 2005, T-Pain has amassed an impressive 28 BMI Awards, including three BMI Songwriter of the Year titles and a BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year award. His commercial success is marked by over 50 million singles sold and a consistent string of #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Tracks like “I’m Sprung,” “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’),” and “I’m ‘n Luv (Wit a Stripper)” became anthems, solidifying his status as a hitmaker. His influence is evident in the work of artists like Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Future, and Travis Scott, who have all adopted and adapted his innovative vocal techniques. Accepting the President’s Award, T-Pain shared a powerful message: “Every journey has a beginning, a middle and an end…. Don’t let anyone dictate your time or how fast you get to the finish line. Let yourself be your own time measurement.” He also expressed gratitude to his team and family, acknowledging their support over the past two decades.

A Night Celebrating the Stars of R&B and Hip-Hop

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards ceremony, hosted by BMI’s EVP and Chief Creative Officer Mike Steinberg and VP, Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton, brought together a constellation of music’s elite. The event paid tribute to the songwriters, producers, and publishers behind the year’s most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs, highlighting the craft and artistry that drives the industry. The evening also celebrated key achievements, with Kendrick Lamar’s viral hit “Not Like Us” being crowned BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year. The track, co-written by Sounwave, Ray Charles, and Sean Momberger, has garnered significant acclaim for its chart dominance, including becoming the longest-charting rap song in Billboard Hot 100 history.

GloRilla: Impactful Artistry and Songwriting Acclaim

Adding to the night’s distinguished honorees, GloRilla, a dynamic and influential force in contemporary hip-hop, was presented with the BMI Impact Award. This award recognizes her groundbreaking artistry, creative vision, and significant influence on the future of music, particularly her role in “leading the way for female hip-hop artists.” GloRilla’s meteoric rise, propelled by her breakout hit “FNF (Let’s Go)” in 2022, has cemented her status as a major talent. Her authentic songwriting and fearless delivery have captivated audiences, leading to her signing with Yo Gotti’s CMG label. In addition to the Impact Award, GloRilla shared the title of BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year in a three-way tie with Tay Keith and Mike Dean, acknowledging their contributions to chart-topping hits.

Recognizing the Architects of Modern Music

The evening also spotlighted other significant achievements. Sounwave was named BMI’s R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year for his extensive work with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift. Sony Music Publishing received the prestigious Publisher of the Year award, underscoring its significant representation of 23 of the year’s most-performed tracks. The recognition of these individuals and companies highlights the collaborative ecosystem that produces the top stories in today’s music charts.

Performances and Emerging Talent

The ceremony was further enlivened by high-energy performances from artists who are currently making waves in the genre. BigXthaPlug delivered energetic sets with “The Largest” and his award-winning “Mmhmm,” while BossMan Dlow captivated the audience with “Mr Pot Scraper” and “Get In With Me.” The “Know Them Now” segment provided a platform for emerging songwriters and artists, featuring soulful performances from Eli Derby (“Cadillac Dream”), TA Thomas (“Preach”), and Lekan (“Always”), showcasing the vibrant future of R&B and hip-hop music.

Conclusion

The 2025 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards served as a powerful testament to the enduring influence and continuous evolution of R&B and hip-hop music. The recognition of T-Pain with the President’s Award marks a significant milestone in celebrating his revolutionary career and lasting impact. Alongside GloRilla’s impactful honors and the acknowledgment of other key industry figures, the night affirmed the creative vitality and forward momentum of these essential genres, promising more inspiring music stories for years to come.
