Will.I.Am Declares Black Thought Superior to Jay-Z, Proposes AI for Rap Battles

Ruby MashitaRuby MashitaAugust 10, 20252 Minutes read

In a recent interview that has sent ripples through the hip hop community, Will.I.Am, the influential artist and producer, has boldly stated his belief that The Roots’ frontman, Black Thought, is a superior rapper to the iconic Jay-Z. Will.I.Am articulated his reasoning, suggesting that while Jay-Z’s past work is celebrated, his current output has become somewhat repetitive.

A Personal Pantheon of Hip Hop Greats

This declaration comes as Will.I.Am unveiled his personal all-time top five rappers. The esteemed list, shared during the interview, exclusively features artists whose foundational contributions have significantly shaped the landscape of hip hop music. Topping this distinguished roster is Black Thought, a rapper widely recognized for his lyrical dexterity and consistent quality over decades. Following Black Thought, Will.I.Am named a pantheon of legendary figures: Nas, another artist lauded for his narrative prowess and intricate rhyme schemes; Rakim, a pioneer celebrated for his revolutionary flow and complex internal rhymes; Big Daddy Kane, known for his smooth delivery and flamboyant stage presence; and KRS One, the ‘The Teacher’ revered for his conscious lyrics and enduring influence on the genre.

This selection underscores Will.I.Am’s deep appreciation for lyrical substance and innovation, principles he evidently feels are more embodied by Black Thought in the contemporary music scene. His critique of Jay-Z, while potentially controversial, highlights a perception within some circles of the hip hop music world that even the most established artists can falter in maintaining fresh and engaging content throughout their careers.

The AI Solution for Rap Supremacy

Beyond his personal rankings, Will.I.Am also put forth a novel idea for settling rap supremacy debates in an era where live, in-person battles might not always be feasible. He proposed the use of an AI simulator as a potential method to determine who is truly ‘doper.’ According to Will.I.Am, such a simulator could analyze the entire collective body of work from various artists and, based on a complex set of criteria, render a judgment on their comparative skill. This concept, while futuristic, speaks to the ongoing fascination with quantifying and ranking artistic merit within hip hop culture.

The idea suggests that an AI could be trained on elements such as lyrical complexity, flow variation, storytelling ability, and overall impact across an artist’s discography. By feeding the AI the vast catalog of rappers like Black Thought, Nas, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and KRS One, alongside others, it could theoretically offer an objective, data-driven perspective on their relative strengths. Will.I.Am’s suggestion reflects a desire for definitive answers in a genre that thrives on debate and stylistic evolution, pushing the boundaries of how we might evaluate an artist’s legacy.

Impact and Future Discussions

Will.I.Am’s candid remarks are sure to ignite further discussion among fans and fellow artists alike. Elevating Black Thought above an artist of Jay-Z’s stature is a significant statement, prompting a re-evaluation of current rap hierarchies and the criteria by which greatness is measured. It also brings renewed attention to the artistry of the chosen top five, reinforcing their status as titans of the hip hop music industry. As the genre continues to evolve, such conversations, whether fueled by personal opinion or advanced technology like AI, remain central to its vibrant culture. The artist’s perspective offers a compelling look at the enduring appeal of lyrical skill and the ongoing quest to define the ultimate hip hop artist.
