Hip Hop’s Top Sellers: Gunna Leads Sales Amidst Chart Strength from Drake, Chance, and Kendrick Lamar (August 23, 2025)

Simone AdamsSimone AdamsAugust 23, 20253 Minutes read

The week ending August 23, 2025, saw a vibrant display of talent and consistent performance from across the hip hop music spectrum, with Gunna’s latest offering, “The Last Wun,” claiming the top spot in weekly sales among rap albums. The chart landscape also featured sustained interest from established artists like Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Chance the Rapper, alongside the enduring popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” and Tyler, the Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS”.

Gunna’s “The Last Wun” Claims Top Sales Spot

Gunna’s “The Last Wun” emerged as the highest-selling rap album of the week, moving an impressive 48,000 units. This release marks a significant moment in Gunna’s career, serving as his final project under the YSL label. While the album’s first-week sales of 48,000 units highlight its commercial strength, its broader chart performance also underscored its impact. “The Last Wun” debuted at number three on the overall Billboard 200 chart with 80,000 equivalent album units earned, and simultaneously topped both the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts. The project, noted for its polished production and diverse collaborations, reflects Gunna’s evolving artistry and resilience. Despite being his final YSL album, it demonstrated his continued ability to connect with his fanbase, generating over 70 million Spotify streams during its debut week.

Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR’s “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” Maintains Chart Presence

The collaborative effort “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” by Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR continued to capture listener attention, securing 23,000 units in sales for the week. This follow-up to their February 2025 debut, which earned a staggering 246,000 equivalent album units and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, showcases the enduring appeal of both artists. Drake’s prolific output in 2025, including this joint project, has kept him consistently in the spotlight, tying him with other solo artists for the most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200. The album’s strong streaming performance and sales position it as a significant entry in the year’s hip hop music catalog.

Chance the Rapper’s “STAR LINE” Debuts with Independent Strength

Chance the Rapper’s highly anticipated album, “STAR LINE,” made a notable debut on the sales charts, moving 22,000 units for the week. Released on August 15, this project marks his return after a six-year hiatus since his 2019 album “The Big Day”. The 22,000 units sold represent a significant achievement for an independent artist, underscoring his dedicated fanbase and his ability to maintain momentum without major label backing. “STAR LINE” reflects Chance’s global journey and personal evolution, blending hip hop with soul and experimental sounds.

Sustained Popularity for Tyler, The Creator and Kendrick Lamar

The week’s sales report also highlighted the consistent popularity of veteran artists. Tyler, the Creator’s “DON’T TAP THE GLASS” recorded 20,000 units in sales. This project, released on July 21, 2025, has been a strong performer throughout the year, previously topping charts with substantial first-week numbers and demonstrating Tyler’s unique artistic vision. “DON’T TAP THE GLASS” landed at number 22 on the Billboard 200 for the week ending August 23, 2025, with 20,000 units.

Similarly, Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” also sold 20,000 units this week. Despite its late 2024 release, “GNX” has been a dominant force in 2025’s album sales, frequently cited as one of the year’s best-selling projects. Its continued chart presence, including topping the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Rap Album Chart for the week, is a testament to Lamar’s profound impact on hip hop music and culture, driven by critical acclaim and powerful lyrical content.

The Broader Hip Hop Music Landscape in August 2025

As the week ending August 23, 2025, concluded, the data revealed a dynamic hip hop music market. While Gunna led the rap album sales, the overall Billboard 200 chart for the week saw Morgan Wallen’s “I’m The Problem” and the “KPop Demon Hunters” soundtrack at the top, indicating the diverse genre appeal at the pinnacle of music consumption.

The trends observed in 2025 continue to highlight the dominance of streaming, the impact of strategic rollouts, and the enduring power of established artists and their loyal fan bases. The success of “STAR LINE” as an independent release alongside the consistent sales of major figures like Drake and Kendrick Lamar showcases the multifaceted nature of success in today’s music industry. The competitive spirit and creative output within hip hop remain as strong as ever, with artists constantly pushing boundaries and redefining the genre. The stories from this week’s sales data paint a picture of a genre that is both evolving and deeply rooted in its rich history, with new narratives constantly unfolding within its vibrant ecosystem.
